The Szeged Symphony Orchestra’s historical roots go back to the eighteenth century, its first opera performance being in 1790 in Szeged.  The orchestra has been led by a number of devoted principal conductors like the young Ferenc Fricsay who have brought the orchestra into its present position as one of the leading opera and symphony orchestras in Hungary. From the 40s there were famous guest-conductors invited to the orchestra like Willem Mengelberg and Erich Kleiber on the concert podium or Pietro Mascagni, conducting his Cavalleria rusticana.

In 1969 the Szeged Symphony Orchestra was established as a separate entity by the legendary principal conductor and composer Viktor Vaszy. He created opera of a standard rivalling the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest and further developed the activities on the concert podium.

From 1975 the new principal conductor and artistic director Tamas Pal developed very successfully both the opera and symphony concerts in Hungary and on many tours to Western Europe and at that time they did their first recordings.  Between 1984 and 1989 Geza Oberfrank and his successor Ervin Acel from 1990 to 1999 expanded the overseas activities of the orchestra with tours of Europe, Brazil, Singapore and Taiwan.

In 1999 Sándor Gyüdi became director and principal conductor.  He frequently invites eminent guest conductors and soloists. The orchestra has become increasingly noted for its innovative programmes played by fine musicians. Gyüdi continues to extend the orchestra’s reputation to the highest standards in the musical life of Hungary and abroad. The Szeged Symphony Orchestra has a busy schedule of lengthy tours, recordings, opera and symphony concerts.
