KISHIDA, Ryusei(1891-1929)
Sprouting Wheat
1920
Oil on canvas
37.5~45.0cm
In 1915,Ryusei Kishida founded the sodosha, and pursued realism which is
represented in the workgSketch of the Cuthof the following year. But his
style, which changed rapidly with the hasty assimilation of European painting, already
begins to shift towards a different direction in around 1920.
As this workgSprouting Wheathwill eventually lead to the series gPortrait
of Reikohwhich made his name everlasting,it can be said that this is a
landscape while at the same time being a portrait which depicts his daughter
Reiko standing on a gently sloping road.
This is because the center which pulls the picture surface together is
the red color of the kimono worn by the girl, and this gives certain tension
to the calm spring scenery of the Shonan region.
Such kind of painting immediately had influenced
on the artists that had
gathered around Kishida, who was bit like
the head of some religious sect.Sadao
Tsubaki'sgA Road in Kugenumahwould not
have existed if it wasn't for
