Petition calls for city to honour Tigers hero Dean Windass with street name

7:00 - 28-May-2008

CALLS for City legend Dean Windass to be honoured by the city are reaching fever pitch.

One avid Tigers has set up an online petition to get a street named after Deano – whose 38th-minute wonder strike sent the Tigers into the Premier League.

And now the Mail is championing the idea and urging people to sign up, through our Deano: We Salute You campaign.

After the triumphant trip to Wembley on Saturday, which secured a place in the top-flight of English football for the first time in the club's 104-year history, and the victorious tour around the city on Monday, a tribute to the local lad from Gipsyville is on the cards.

The city council has given the strongest indication it is willing to overturn tradition and for the first time honour a living person.

Councillor Carl Minns, leader of Hull City Council, said a civic honour would be a “fitting” tribute to the man who projected the city onto the international sporting stage and offered hundreds of thousands of fans an opportunity to celebrate.

He said: “It is a wonderful idea that some form of civic honour be bestowed upon Dean.

“What he has done for the city is tremendous and it would be a fitting honour for him.

“In the next few weeks we will be discussing the options available to us and exactly how the finer points will be worked.”

The council members will now decide what exactly should be done in his honour.

And as fans come back down to earth in the aftermath of the greatest game in the club's history, many are determined not to let the occasion go unmarked.

Simon Loughlin, 42, of Thorndale, north Hull, has started an online petition, which he is planning on handing over to council officials, to name a city street after him.

Mr Loughlin said after the council offered a lasting memory to Rugby League legend Clive Sullivan, the same should be done for Deano.

He said: “Another famous Hull son, Clive Sullivan, has the main route into Hull named after him after, following a glittering career in Rugby League when he crossed the divide between black and white and red and white.

“Deano does the same for football, uniting many fans across the game in admiration for him.

“He unites football fans of all clubs and ages with his passion for the game and his burning desire to be a winner.

“The fairytale was written when he scored the goal at Wembley to take his beloved tigers up to the Premier League.

“A place carrying his name would be a fitting tribute to a true City Legend.”
