The one in Camden

seems to be being run down.

The one in Camden

is like hell itself, only hell has a slightly more homely ambience and a better paintjob. And a nicer soundsystem, according to the promotional website. For hell.

Hasn't been open that long has it?

I can't see the camden one shutting as it's in Camden - where lots of ppl who like music live and visit. then again i may be wrong

What do you reckon's going on then

Are they closing the ones that aren't making much money so they can sell off the chain, mebbe?

Credit crunch with semi-skimmed?

though

I did see that a Camden Monarch relaunch party was scheduled soon, wasn't the monarch the old name for the barfly? (or was that the camden falcon? I forget)

yup!

someone will undoubtedly correct me if i'm wrong but the new monarch (which used to be a fake wetherspoons) is being run by the fella who used to run the old monarch before it became the barfly. and hilariously, they're in spitting distance of each other.

misty moon??

yah

and formerly

the man in the moon
which was home to many a drunken DiS gathering in the early days. *wipes away a nostalgic tear*

So it is

Been open since the beginning of the yaer apparently, and putting on regular gigs.

I suppose that's the disadvantage of calling it the Monarch when half of Camden still calls Barfly the Monarch.

The Brighton one has been closed for 'the same reason'

according to this, and a more appropriate thread I can't find: http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3414533

Both shut down 'for refurbishment'. However, it comes as a surprise to the staff and all promoters with gigs booked for the next few months in cambridge.

Quite.

"HELP. WE NEED TO PAINT THE WALLS. IMMEDIATELY. CANCEL EVERYTHING."

Doesn't happen. It's shut.

No chance

They're taking over everywhere. Seems like a new one opens every month.

Just as I graduate too... it must be fate.

It's a shame, as I've seen some realy good bands there. However, I guess it was pretty much always empty. *Sigh*

i dont know

anyone who has had a positive view of playing the cambridge barfly, so it makes sense.

A source told me a few months ago

that Cambridge Barfly wasn't making any money and was essentially a vanity project for the guy who owns the Barfly group, seeing as he's from Cambridge.

I'd like to stress that this source is DEFINITELY NOT employed by Cambridge Barfly.

:(

pretty shit though, that means there's not much now in terms of good small venues anymore. No-one can afford to book the Man on the Moon and that only leaves The Portland, which to be fair, is pretty awesome.
Now Melt Banana might be cancelled...

It's another Cambridge venue down though

bad news for the town. It was really new, so they were still ironing out problems, but they were getting there.

.

Charlottefield at the Cambridge Barfly back in Feb was one of the best gigs I've seen in a long time. They happened to have the guy who mixed their record on the sound desk, and he not only mixed it perfectly but really cranked it up! So fucking good

There was never anyone there though. It's so hard to get a decent crowd to a smaller band's gig in Cambridge

American Music Clubare

meant to play there soon, i wonder how many punters that will get

.

Well, none. Because it's closed

snide.

but totally true. I like it :D

.

XD

I couldn't resist. Sorry, to whoever that was :p

.

Anyway the Barfly was, unfortunately, too big for Cambridge I think. Especially placed where it is. Soul Tree is a much more likely medium sized venue location wise, but it's probably hella pricey because you've got to hire the whole place out

it's pretty soulless in there

needs dirtying up a bit

.

Tell you what though, it was well nice to have a fuckoff-loud sound system in there. Much as I love the Port, it doesn't often shake my whole body like the Barfly did on occasion

Man on the Moon could and should

be the best venue in Cambridge. It's just too expensive to hire, and they won't spend the money to improve it/justify the cost.

It's also the only proper 14+ venue left standing. Cellar Bar 8 doesn't count because it doesn't have a stage.

Melt Banana Gig - June 24th

Norwich Arts Centre may be able to host this gig... We're trying to get hold of the promoters to see if they think it's a feasible option...

uuurrr

i have to say, whilst the moon is full of Nostalgia for myself, the portland is a far better venue. Since the last refurb, the sound is brilliant and its so intimate and full of atmosphere when packed.

ah well, we all had doubts over the barfly. Ok it probably did a bit better than The Loft but ultimately has gone the same way....

Fuck!

Really? It was really, really shit, but it was getting in plenty of good bands :(

Also:

any idea what'll happen to the melt banana gig, Ben?

So for small bands:

Barfly = closed
MOTM = too expensive
Portland = good, yes?
Cellar Bar 8 = no idea, but doesn't it only have strippers and pub bands?
Soul Tree = too expensive

Is there anywhere else?

the reason why they are all closing down

and in brighton why the freebutt is doing such bas business, is that they are not sympathetic to local audiences...its jsut a blanket booking- for instance-12 people turned up to see yeasayer when they first played brighton barfly.....all the others pais half to see the support act (who got a longer set cos more poeple came to see them). If this show had been promoted by a local promoter it would have been absolutely rammed. Seriously, advertising in your own glossy flyer doesnt cut it. As for the business plan of the freebutt...that would make interesting reading- lets book loads of metal bands (who play in the better engine rooms), and try to attract mini moshers, instead of half decent bands...

pah its rubbish,

im running away to canada
