Benson, George - The George Benson collection (1981, One Way, 3577-2)

In order to produce what it thought would be a definitive two-LP retrospective on Benson, Warner Brothers raided not only its own archives but also those of A&M;, Arista and CTI. For added sales appeal, Warner inserted two new recordings, one of which (Turn your love around) became another huge hit single, rising to No. 5 on the pop charts. Today, Collection remains the most inclusive Benson sampler, though far from a definitive one due in part to the scarcity of instrumentals. Of course, the big Warner Brothers vocal hits are here (This masquerade, On Broadway, Give me the night), plus an artistic triumph like Moody's mood but only one WB instrumental (Breezin') can be heard. From Arista, it's strictly pop — The greatest love of all and the duet with Aretha Franklin, Love all the hurt away. The A&M; choices Last train to Clarksville and Here comes the sun could have been better but the two CTIs, White rabbit and the great Cast your fate to the wind are excellent representatives. (Richard S. Ginell)

Turn your love around was written for the purpose of adding new tracks to a greatest-hits collection by George Benson. Warner Bros. executives approached songwriter/producer Jay Graydon to write some songs for the multi-record set. With two days before the deadline, Graydon got an idea while having dinner with Steve Lukather, who came up with a verse. The bridge and other verses (and the finished record's background vocals) were contributed by Bill Champlin. A couple of days later, Graydon met Benson for the first time at Graydon's impressive home studio and found an instant kinship; both were guitar players. The spunky track featured one of the first Linn drum machines, which was programmed by Jeff Porcaro with synth bass played by his Toto bandmate David Paich. Graydon and Lukather played guitar on the song. It also features one of Benson's most aggressive vocals, though it's still in his favored smooth style. Turn your love around hit number one R&B; and number five pop in early 1982 and was awarded a Grammy in 1983 when it was chosen as best R&B; song. Bill Champlin also recorded this song for his album Through it all in 1994.
