Here's a list of the rides we ran in 2005, useful if you're looking
for inspiration for a ride:
Sunday 2th January: New Years Ride.. Meet
at Southwark Needle, London Bridge at 12.00; Cutty Sark, Greenwich at
13.00 and then under the river, through the Isle of Dogs before taking
the canal from Victoria Park to Camden. After that it's a nice ride
through Primrose Hill, Regents Park, Hyde Park and down to the river
to finish back at London Bridge. Best to bring lights as it'll probably

Sunday 9th January: Locks, Docks and Wapping
Coffee. Meet 9am Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge).
10am Cutty Sark Gardens. That slow all day docklands explore. Lunch
at Dagenham City Farm and afternoon tea/coffee at Wapping Pumping Station.

Sunday 16th January: Richmond Park. Meet 9:30am
Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge), then 10:30 Peckham Rye
Common on the corner of East Dulwich Grove and Peckham Rye. We'll then
follow LCN routes through Dulwich, Herne Hill, Clapham, Putney and into
Richmond Park from the East Sheen end. Pub lunch in Richmond before heading
back towards London Bridge along the river. A medium distance ride and
although it starts mainly on roads, will generally be kept off of main
roads and through some pleasant local scenery. Please bring lights. Andrew

February
Saturday 5 February: Southwark Bridge to Crystal
Palace. Meet 10am Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge).
A slow study ride with lots of stops and coffee to gather our thoughts
on improvements for this LCN+ route 23. Barry. 07905 889 005
Sunday 13 February: Luuurve Ride To get
us in the mood for St. Valentines Day we'll seek out the most romantic
locations in London. Ride goes via London Bridge to see Bridget Jones'
flat, then across Hyde Park to Notting Hill to see if we can find the
famous blue door. Meet 10am at Cutty Sark Gardens, 11am at the Southwark

Saturday 26th February: Norman Foster's London
Buildings. An all day leisurely explore around the outside (mostly)
of some of London's most exciting new buildings of the last 20 years
by Foster and Partners. Meet: 10am at the Southwark Needle (South side
of London Bridge). Report

Sunday 6th March: Parks & Canals Ride Meet
at Southwark Needle, London Bridge at 9:30am; Cutty Sark, Greenwich
at 10:30am and then under the river, through the Isle of Dogs before

to Eastbourne About 40km of easy rolling country with fantastic
views, short sections are muddy and steep. Mountain bike tyres and rainwear
essential, also spare tubes and energy snack. We'll have a pub lunch
at Firle or Alciston. Train details: London Bridge 09.11, arrive Brighton

Friday 18th March: Greenwich: Sussex countryside
north and east of Gatwick..

Saturday 19th March: Not SO Hilly North Downs.
Meet at London Bridge Station at 08:40 for the 09:03 train to Edenbridge.
33 medium paced miles, a few not too serious climbs and the occasional
bit of track riding. pub lunch along the way and aiming for a 4 o'clock-ish
train back. Bring your network rail cards if you have them. Andrew.

Meeting.. Despite an
uncertain future The London Velodrome once again hosts the
Good Friday International Track Meeting. Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens
or 9.45am Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge, for a ride there.

Tuesday 5th April: Afterworker: The Ferry Greenway
(home).. Afterworker starting at Southwark Needle, south end of
London Bridge at 6.30pm. Heading east along the river path to the Woolwich
Ferry cross the river and then back west along the Greenway to Victoria

Saturday 9th April: Greenwich to Whitstable (Weekender?!).
Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens Greenwich. 65 miles. (Phone me to

Sunday 10 April: Whitstable to Dover Coastal Ozone
Overdose. Meet Whitstable Harbour 11am for 55 miles and 13 resorts

Thursday 14th April Afterworker: Rivers & Parks.
Meet 6.30pm start at the Southwark Needle, London Bridge. Up the river
towards Putney and then heading north for a circuit of Hyde Park before
meandering back to the river and back to London Bridge. Andrew 07729

Saturday 16th April Richmond Park Ride (Spring
Version) Meet 9:30am Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge),
then 10:15 Common. We'll then follow LCN routes through Dulwich, Herne
Hill, Clapham, Putney and into Richmond Park from the East Sheen end.
Lunch in the park before heading back towards London Bridge along the
river. 30ish miles, medium pace, flowers, deer and the joys of spring.

Wednesday 20th April: Inspired General Election
meeting. Southwark Cyclists in partnership with Living
Streets have invited the four main Parties to a pre-General Election
meeting, at InSpire on Liverpool
Grove, to discuss local transport issues. Each party representative
will be asked to speak for no longer than 5 minutes, followed by a question
and answer session from the floor. The meeting will start at 7pm and
end at 8.30pm and will be chaired by John Stewart of

Thursday 21st April: Towpathy Afterworker.
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge). Limehouse
basin then the Lea Navigation towpath as far north as we get before
turning round to get back to Southwark Needle for 8.30pm. Barry 07905

Saturday 23rd April: Suffolk Ferries. Meet
9am sharp at Southwark Needle or Liverpool Street station for the 9.30am
train to Manningtree. Arrives 10.31am. Then to Harwich and the landing-craft
ferry to Felixstowe, then the rowing-boat ferry north. We should be
able to fit in the Viking ship-burial at Sutton Hoo before looping back.
A steady 45 miles with some voluptuous hills in estuary country. Train
fare is 9ukp (each) return for groups of 4. Ferries add up to about

Thursday 28 April: Border Patrol Afterworker..
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge. Easy, keep
the green wheely bins on your left. Ish. 16 miles of every inch of Southwark's

May
Sunday 1st May: Locks, Docks and one smoking ferry.
Meet 10am Southwark Needle. 11am Cutty Sark Gardens. All day docklands
tour hopefully ending up at Mayday Jack in the Spring morrisstuff stickmating
at 3.45pm (Market Porter) and 4.30pm (Horshoe). Barry 07905 889 005.
Thursday 5th May: North to Woolwich Ferry Afterworker.
Not the Wapping Way. Back along the river through Greenwich. Meet 6.30pm.

Saturday 7th May: Ride to Recumbent racing and
tryout at Eastway.
Meet 9:11 Peckham Pulse and 10:10 Southwark Needle. Route TBA. This
is your opportunity to try out a range of different laid-back machines
on the wonderful Lea Valley Cycle Circuit . The racing starts from 12
noon, but there will time before and after the races to use the circuit.

Thursday 12 May: Open the Velodrome Afterworker.
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle. To the 7.45pm Save Herne Hill Velodrome
meeting at the Methodist Church Hall, Half Moon Lane, SE24. Find your

Saturday 14th May:
Get me home Free Decathlon
Bike Workshop.
Two free one hour workshops on emergency roadside repairs, at 1pm and
3pm at the Decathlon store in Surrey Quays - directions.
Meet at the store workshop 5 minutes before each session. Bikes and
tools not required, how to change an inner tube, repair a chain etc
will be shown on a workshop bike. Call Richie on 0207 394 2001 to book.
Sunday 15th May: Sussex Sculpture Ride.
Meet 8.30am under the clock at Waterloo mainline for the 9am train to
Petersfield. Arrives there 10.26am. 16.60ukp return. 11ukp with a railcard.
Then it's a lovely very undulating 16 miles along the South Downs. Goodwood
Sculpture park charges 10ukp entry. 2 trains an hour back. Or stretch
the day and ride the 65 miles home. Careful. It really is that far to

Thursday 19th May: Afterworker: High Sunset.
Starting at Southwark Needle, London Bridge 6.30. Ride east along the
river before turning South along Deptford Creek to Lewisham. Climb to
the top of Hilly Fields to enjoy the view before rolling back down to

Thursday 26th May: Afterworker: River & Parks.
Meet 6.30pm start at the Southwark Needle, London Bridge. Up the river
towards Putney and then heading north for a circuit of Hyde Park before

June and Bike Week
Thursday 2nd June:: Woolwich Ferry Afterworker.
Meet 6.30pm at Southwark Needle for the northern route to the Woolwich
Ferry. Back along the southern Thames Path. Barry. 07905 889 005.
Saturday 4 June: Hoo peninsula.
Meet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich for a quickish 25 miles to Gravesend
and coffee at the seaside cafe there. Then a gentle 20 mile explore
starting with the lovely Shorne Marshes, lunch on the lonely Hoo peninsula
and quick look at the Northwood Hill heronry, the UK's biggest with
about 150 now-nesting pairs. Then quick ride back to London. Around
75 miles in all and a good long day in the lightness that we'll put
to bed in a pub. Train option: get the train there or back or both or
neither...the Charing Cross (9.52am) train, Waterloo East (9.54am),
London Bridge (9.59) and Greenwich (10.07am) gets to Gravesend at 10.44am.

Sunday 5th June: Ladies' ride
approx. 18 miles reverse Locks, Docks, Woolwich Ferry to Greenwich Park.
Meet 10am at Southwark Needle, London Bridge. Bring spare tubes, pump,
sandwiches, water. Ride north of river, then east through Isle of Dogs,
past London City Airport, cross river on Woolwich Ferry, into Greenwich
Park to the Green Fair and get your bike tweaked by Dr Bike. Men in

Great chance to explore London's riverside, slowly hugging every cyclable
inch of the London riverside in an east-west 8 shape. Meet 10am Southwark
Needle (south end of London Bridge). East along the Thames path to the
Woolwich Ferry. And over. West to London Bridge. And over. West to Putney
and the embankment's Duke's Head. Over Putney Bridge and east back to

Globe, Bankside. 7 - 9.30am. All sorts of bikes in that round.
Bike groups from all over London are converging on our breakfast. There'll

Wednesday 15th June: Aunty Karen does Michael's
Monster Afterworker. The 45 mile fast ride into the North Downs
lives on. A fast and hilly circular ride into the Surrey hills and back

Afterworker. Afterworker starting at Southwark Needle, south end

Friday 17th June: Afterworker: Easy Royal Parks.
A Royal Ride at regal pace, starting at Southwark Needle, south end
of London Bridge at 6.30pm. Gentle ride up to Regent's Park past the
Zoo, across to Hyde Park, Green Park and St James' before finishing

Sunday 19th June: Treasure Hunt. A cunning
trail of questions and visual clues round north Southwark's Bankside
and the City of London. A very easy ride for the curious and a great
chance to look around. Meet 10am: Southwark Needle. Quiz sheets will
be handed out. Teams will be formed. Prizes will be awarded. Probably.

Sunday 19th June: Southwark - Off the Beaten Track
Ride lead by local poet and guide John Constable (author of 'Southwark
Mysteries'.) The ride will depart from Southwark Tourist
Information Centre (based at Vinopolis, 1 Bank End in Bankside)
at 3pm on Sunday 19 June and will last approximately two hours. The
unusual places visited will include a Medieval graveyard and the haunts
of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dickens and Chaplin. Anyone without a bike
can hire one from The London
Bicycle Tour Company, based at 1a Gabriels Wharf, at the special
rate of £5.00 for the duration of the tour.

Meet at 09.30 Southwark Needle next to London Bridge. A medium paced
ride for the 30 or so miles to Windsor taking in the riverside, Richmond,
Kingston and Hampton Court. Stop for lunch and a little look around

Saturday 23 July - Sunday July
24th 2005: The Legend. Dunwich Dynamo Number 13.
Not a Southwark ride as such. There's no formal entry procedure and
it's free. It's an unsupported (yes, really) overnight ride to Dunwich
Beach in Suffolk along, once out of London, surprisingly deserted lanes.
120 miles. Then swim. Or not. Sunday 1pm coach back tickets are £13
until 30 June, £20 after that.
Meet 7pm Cutty Sark Gardens for the 4 mile ride to the 9pm start at
the Pub on the Park, London Fields, Hackney or go straight there. For

Sunday 31st July: The Cathedral of Sewage.
Meet 10am Southwark Needle or 11am Cutty Sark Gardens for the riverside
ride to Crossness Pumping Station's Open Day. 4ukp admission there.
It's 13/8 miles there, same back. Quiet backroads to Greenwich then

Thursday 4 August: Canals Afterworker
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle. North up the Lea then west to City Road
basin and back through The City. 15 mostly towpath miles. Barry. 07905

Thursday 11 August: Paddington Basin Afterworker
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle for an exploring ride up through the parks
to recently unveiled Paddington Basin..then back east along the Regents

Saturday 13th August: Locks, Docks etc.
meet 9am Southwark Needle or 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the slow leisurely
always different docklands explore. All day. Lunch at Dagenham City
Farm. About 30 slow miles with drop-out points. Barry 07905 889 005.
Sunday 14th August: Frinton!
Meet 9am sharp at Southwark Needle or 9.15am at Liverpool Street station
for the 9.30am train to Manningtree. 8.50 ukp return for groups of 4.
East alongside the Stour Estuary to old Harwich for coffee then southish
to Walton-on-the-Naze and beach-huts all the way to Frinton, then Clacton.
Train back from there, some may extend. 35 tarmac miles with smallish

Thursday 18th August: Derny Afterworker.
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle to ride to
Herne Hill Velodrome to watch the Derny paced cycling. Barry. 07905

Friday 19th August: Full moon ride
30 miles east through Greenwich, Woolwich and to Erith and back to catch
the full moon. If you've never been east of Greenwich, then enjoy a
warm, summer's night ride along the river in this very interesting part
of London. Bring something to eat and drink along the way, plus , lights,
spare inner tube, puncture repair kit, etc. If you are interested, please

Sunday 21st August: Brightlingsea Explore.
Meet 9am Southwark Needle or 9.15am Liverpool Street for the 9.30am
train to Manningtree. Brightlingsea is a unique and isolated little
seaside estuary village, Essex's only Cinque port and the only one north
of the Thames. There's only one road in. But we'll aim to get the ferry
there from Point Clear. All day ride. About road 40 miles. Barry 07905

Tuesday 22nd August: Greenwich Ride: Afterworker;
Earth from the Air. Ride up the North Side of the Thames to Tower
Bridge. Stop in to take a look at the Earth from the Air exhibition
(free). Back to CSG along the Thames path. Ray.
Thursday 25th August: Woolwich Ferry Afterworker.
Meet 6.30pm Southwark Needle. The northern route to the ferry, then
over and back along the southern Thames Path. Barry 07905 889 005.
26-30th August: Wild Wales Weekend /Greenwich
Cyclists have provisionally booked all the places at the Bala
Backpackers to do the Wild Wales
Challenge and will be organising transport there. Book your own
place on the ride, but say your with Greenwich Cyclists. The cost for
the four nights and the travel there and back will be around 75ukp per
person, give or take a fiver. This needs to be paid in advance to secure

Meeting. Rose Ades, who lives and cycles in Southwark and who heads
up Transport for London's Cycling Centre for Excellence, is our keynote

Thursday 13th October: The John Peel Ride.
Meet 9am Southwark Needle (directions) or
9.40am at Liverpool
Street station for the 10am train to Manningtree. 4 tickets for
the price of two.
It's John Peel Day today, the first anniversary of his death. There's
music all over in memory. But we're simply riding to visit his grave.
It's a gentle 26 miles from Manningtree station to Great Finborough
in lovely deepest Suffolk. We'll pace the ride for whoever turns up
(within reason!) and stop for coffee etc as necessary. Pub lunch. Afterwards,
the nearest station for London is only 3 miles away. Or there's Manningtree.

Friday 14th October: Cycle Show Ride. Meet
10am Southwark Needle, south end of London Bridge, for a leisurely 5
mile crafty fascinating backways ride to the Excel centre and the
UK's biggest bike show. 12ukp on the door but LCC members get a

Saturday 15th October: Greenwich to Whitstable
(weekender?!) . Meet 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the 65 miles to
lovely Whitstable. Some big roads out of London. (Or train it halfway
to Rochester and meet us for lunch. Charing Cross 11.22am/ London Bridge
11.29am arrives Rochester 12.30pm. Phone me). Then train it back (careful....there's
a coached section) or stayover. Find you own B&B; etc.

Hoo Peninsula
Mmeet 9am Cutty Sark Gardens for a quickish 25 miles to Gravesend
and coffee there. Then a gentle 20 mile explore starting with the
lovely Shorne Marshes, lunch on the lonely Hoo peninsula. i
Then quick ride back to London. Around 75 miles in all.
Train option: get the train there or back or both or neither:
the Charing Cross (9.52am) train, Waterloo East (9.54am),
London Bridge (9.59) and Greenwich (10.07am) gets to Gravesend at
10.44am. I'll meet that train and muster all for coffee.

Coal House Fort.
Meet 9am Southwark Needle or 10am Cutty Sark Gardens for the 14
mile big roads fastish ride to Stone Crossing station.
Or get the 10.01 train from Charing Cross (10.08 London Bridge,
10.16am Greenwich) that arrives at Stone at 10.52am.
The ride will meet you there at that halt.
We'll then get the police lift under the Thames, have a quick look
at Tilbury Fort before going onto the rare open day at
Coalhouse Fort,
4 miles away. 3.50/3 ukp Entry fee.
Getting back: lots of options. Easiest: train back from Grays,
5 miles from Tilbury Fort. (Nothing running from Tilbury that day).
Or retrace via Dartford Bridge. Or train from Pitsea to Fenchurch
Street. Pitsea is 10 unexplored miles north of Coalhouse Fort.
Or ride the messy roads through Dagenham etc.
Not sure how I'll get back. Decide on day.

to Greenwich station). Lunch at Aylesford Priory. Train back from Tonbridge
