INDIANAPOLIS — Wicked weekend storms with tornadoes and heavy rain pounded the Midwest, where at least four people drowned and one was missing in floodwaters that swallowed roads and neighborhoods. Falling trees and debris killed three others. Also, one person was killed and four injured when lightning struck a pavilion at a state park in Connecticut.

Rescuers in boats continued to pluck people from rising waters in Indiana, as residents of Chicago's northern and southern suburbs spent Sunday cleaning up from tornadoes. At least one tornado hit the Omaha area with little to no warning as people slept Sunday morning, damaging homes and businesses. No major injuries were reported.

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle declared a state of emergency in 29 counties, and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels sent a letter to President Bush requesting that an expedited major disaster be declared for 44 counties in Indiana. Iowa saw some of its worst flooding in more than a decade, Gov. Chet Culver said as he declared an emergency in nearly a third of the state's 99 counties.
