Hundreds in Oxford protest at Dalai Lama visit

By Matt Wilkinson

Hundreds of Bhuddist monks gathered in the centre of Oxford this morning to protest loudly against a visit by the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The Dalai Lama is speaking at the Sheldonian Theatre and about 1,000 members of the Western Shugden Society turned up outside.

The protesters chanted “Dalai Lama stop lying” and other slogans as he arrived for the talk at 9.30am.

The chanting reached fever pitch as the Dalai Lama arrived in a chauffeur-driven vehicle and was escorted into the building.

The society claim the Tibetan leader has banned a traditional Bhuddist prayer, while his followers are abusing the human rights of Shugden Bhuddists.

The Sheldonian Theatre was cordoned off to members of the public who are not invited to the talk and there was a strong police presence including officers on horseback.

Supporters of the Western Shugden Society are thought to have come to Oxford from as far away as Brazil, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Many of the demonstrators have been following the Dalai Lama around the UK and protested at his engagements in London and Nottingham in recent weeks.

They claim the Tibetan leader has banned a traditional Buddhist prayer, the Dorje Shugden, and worshipping a deity while his followers are committing human rights abuses on Shugden Buddhists.

Kelsang Pema, spokesman for the Western Shugden Society, said: “The demonstration is very loud and we hope the Dalai Lama hears our message.

“When the Dalai Lama was 50, he decided that one very simple and pure spiritual prayer should not longer be regarded as Buddhist.

“But even if he experienced a change of heart himself, he should not have inflicted this on Buddhist communities throughout the world.

“We have tried to petition him peacefully since the 1990s but he will not listen and now people are being expelled from monasteries and schools for trying to practise this prayer.”

The demonstration is expected to last until shortly after midday.

Thousands join anti-war protests in London and Glasgow

Organisers said there were 40,000 people

 antiwar.jpg

Thousands of people have joined demonstrations in London and Glasgow, to mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the war in Iraq.

Demonstrators called for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq and Afghanistan and for Gaza’s borders to be re-opened.

Organisers said 40,000 people took part in London but police said 10,000. A Stop the War spokesman said Iraq had made the world a more dangerous place.

But a Foreign Office spokesman said Iraq was making “steady progress”.

Green MEP Caroline Lucas called for Tony Blair and Gordon Brown to be prosecuted for war crimes.

I wrote a much more detailed report initially, but the site “timed me out” so I lost everything. Not wrirting it again, so read the report and comments at:

http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2008/03/393992.html?c=on#c191319

to get a flavour of the day. No doubt, the speeches will be on youtube in due course - I hope so, I’d like to hear what was said in Parliament Square, because there was 50000 people and very little noise amplification and the stage was little more than a soap box - in stark contrast to the Cease Fire Now demonstration at the same rally point when Israel were attacking Lebanon.

Trafalgar Square was good, before the march, with some excellent speeches. Two of the best were from George Galloway and Tony Benn. Best videos I could find, so soon after the rally are:

George Galloway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FBVj1U4Y8A
Tony Benn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCub-VgMz1A
Also listen to an interview with Tony Benn on the eve of the event:
http://www.spiderednews.com/GeorgeGalloway.htm?vid=270997

No trouble at the march itself, police generally good humoured, as usual on these occasions. However, apparently, four people were arrested near Trafalgar Square for photographing undercover “FIT” police. Arrested under Trades Union legislaton. Interesting! Full story:

One interesting comment from the above:

police jobs
16.03.2008 13:22

I spoke to a police officer and asked if he knew that paying taxes to the Central UK Government constituted Illegal activity in that it is defined as ‘conduct ancilliary to the commisssion of a war crime’ under the 2001 International Crimianl Court Act 2001.

The police officer indicated that he was aware, but that “it’s more than my jobsworth” (his words) to withold his tax payments.

Which is to say that his job is more important than the lives of Iraqi and Afghan Civilians, and that upholding the Law is of lessor importance…..

War Criminals!

El Gordo “Fat boy” Brown

More EXCELLENT pics of the march:

In summary… great opportunity, great route for the march, good people there, but another opportunity sadly lost by STW. YET AGAIN! I just hope there’ll be more passion shown by the organisers (CND this time) at the nuclear weapons factory, Aldermaston on Easter Monday.

Earth tremor felt across England

(Update: suggestions that it wasn’t an earthquake)

seismogram.jpg

People from across large parts of England have reported an earth tremor.

The BBC received calls from people in Yorkshire, the Midlands, Manchester, the Thames Valley, Norfolk, Preston, Newcastle and London about a “quake”.

The tremor was felt at about 0100 GMT and lasted for nearly 10 seconds but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The British Geological Survey said it believed the quake was of the magnitude of 5.1 and said the epicentre was close to Grimsby in north-east Lincolnshire.

A spokesman said it was the biggest earthquake to hit England since 1990 and could be of a level to cause minor damage to buildings.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached a magnitude of 5.0 and caused damage to homes.

And last year an earthquake measuring 4.3 hit Folkstone in Kent, causing widespread damage.

Jemma Harrison, 22, in Bury, Greater Manchester, said: “It was really bad. I was fast asleep and woke up and the room was shaking and there was a loud bang and alarms were going off.”

Natasha Cavey, in Tipton in the West Midlands, said: “All my cupboard doors flew open and the whole house shook, it was unreal. I can’t believe it.”

David Somerset, 41, from Driffield near Beverley in East Yorkshire, said: “I have never felt one as strong as that one before. I was in my sitting room and the grandfather clock was rattling rather violently.

“It was very strong, I felt the whole room moving.”

Previous recent significant tremors:

April 2007 - Kent (magnitude 4.3)
December 2006 - Dumfries and Galloway (magnitude 3.5)
September 2002 - Dudley, West Midlands (5.0)
October 2001 - Melton Mowbray (4.1)
September 2000 - Warwick (4.2)

Privatised nuclear storage base at RAF Faldingworth

MP says West Lindsey council must stop explosions at airfield
http://www.marketrasenmail.co.uk/news/MP-says-West-Lindsey-council.376 9112.jp

AREA MP Edward Leigh lays responsibility for dealing with the contensious explosions at Faldingworth airfield firmly at the door of West Lindsey District Council - specifically on the shoulders of chief executive Duncan Sharkey.

“I will tell him he must use enforcement powers to close the company down,” he told an angry meeting of residents at Newtoft last Friday.

“They have the power but they have been reluctant to do it. Duncan Sharkey is the chief executive and he should get a personal grip on it.”

This is the second wave of explosions rocking villages around the former RAF station, causing damage to properties and misery for residents. Little has changed from the episode 18 months ago when West Lindsey took noise nuisance readings.

Pensioner Sheila Blenkinsop of Newton by Toft, is only now having damage repaired that was caused by the September 2006 explosions, and has to pay an Insurance excess of £1,000.

“It’s just as bad as last time,” she said. “The blasts are going on four days a week.”

Newtoft’s Dom Pavia said it was ‘absolutely horrendous’. “There is a blast every 15 or 20 minutes. Video cameras I’ve set up to record the blasts and vibrations have been knocked over. There are cracks appearing in my walls and chimney breast and ceilings have dropped.”

Mr Leigh accepted there had been some progress since 2006 in that enforcement officers had been able to get onto the site.

“They’re saying it is vital work in the national interest,” he said “but it must be possible to do that and be aware of residents.”

He advised residents to ‘band together and take legal action’.

“It is a scandalous state of affairs. I don’t think there is any doubt these cracks are down to these explosions and you would be perfectly entitled to take legal action against the company,” he said.

Mr Sharkey insists the council is working with both the site operator and local residents to resolve the issue.

“Our aim is to strike a balance with this company, which has 34 full-time employees and carries out a perfectly lawful business, with the wishes of the local community who want disruption kept to an absolute minimum,” he said.

He said the site was licensed by national government and West Lindsey’s role was to m
ake sure no statutory nuisance was being caused.

“Last year there was a breach in the regulations and the council stopped a different company from operating. On this occasion noise tests have not produced readings which amount to a statutory nuisance and the site owners have installed vibration equipment at the nearest property to the tests which are also monitoring the position.

“It is not, and never will be, West Lindsey’s intention to close down lawful businesses which provide employment for local people. More than 100 people are employed by this project both directly and indirectly.

“However, the residents have to be considered too and we will continue to work with both parties to minimise any disruption and inconvenience.”

Alan Longden, at Faldingworth, believes the company is just going to carry on.

“They don’t look at the impact it is having on the surrounding area. They’ve got a licence but that doesn’t look beyond the site itself. The problem is that it is in flat open countryside, surrounded by villages. It should be on a remote site.”

The full article contains 548 words and appears in Market Rasen Mail newspaper.

From wikipedia - mustn’t get carried away but……

RAF Faldingworth was an airfield used by RAF Bomber Command during and after World War II. It was located close to the village of Faldingworth in Lincolnshire. It was used during the war by number 300 (Polish) Squadron and a memorial is now in place to them at the end of the main runway.

Faldingworth entered service life as Toft Grange decoy airfield and later as a satellite airfield of RAF Lindholme. Late in 1943 it became a satellite of RAF Ludford Magna.

After the war the base was used for storage of weapons. becoming a nuclear weapons store in 1957. It closed in 1972 and was later used by BMARC as a weapons test site.

Current Ordnance Survey maps show the remains of a typical wartime bomber airfield, with the former storage site overlaying the south-western part of the airfield, about 2km east of Spridlington. There is a cluster of RAF-built housing north-east of the airfield area, and a group of RAF buildings used as an industrial estate.

Blimey! Could it have been an underground nuke?

NATO’s Afghan mission at risk: Britain, U.S.

afghan300906_228x216.jpg

Mon Feb 12, 2008

LONDON (Reuters) - The reluctance of NATO allies to send more troops and resources to Afghanistan is jeopardizing the military mission there, the United States and Britain said on Monday.British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Afghanistan risked becoming a “failed state” unless more efforts were made to fight Islamic militants, and U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns appealed for more help from Europeans.

U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban government in 2001, but Taliban rebels launched an insurgency two years ago and violence has risen sharply since then.

Miliband, who visited Afghanistan last week with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said it was vital other NATO members increase their commitment.

“It would help precipitate even more dangerous insecurity in Afghanistan (if the international community pulled out),” Miliband told BBC radio. “If more effort is not made, Afghanistan risks becoming a ‘failed state.’”

“We do need the whole of the international community, including European countries, to step up,” he said.

Burns, speaking ahead of talks with British officials on Afghanistan and other areas of foreign policy, said it was unfair that a few NATO members — mentioning the Americans, British, Dutch and Canadians — were shouldering the burden.

“It is incumbent on us to say, with great respect, we need help from Germany and the other major west European countries,” he told reporters, when asked about Germany’s involvement.

“It’s hard to think of a successful military operation when the majority of the capitals are saying we decide where and when the troops are deployed,” he said.

He referred to the large number of Canadian casualties, adding: “For Canada to do all that and not have the support of every country in the alliance to come and help with resupply, with helicopters, with combat troops, is not a recipe for success.”

In Canada, Defence Minister Peter MacKay said that while he did not think “we’re nearing any sort of a crumbling or a collapse of the Alliance,” the response from NATO would reflect its ability to conduct major missions.

“We share the view that other countries have to come to the fold. And part of that is (showing) a willingness to make these difficult, tough sacrifices in a military mission such as this,” he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

Burns said he believed NATO’s mission was heading “in the right direction” and would ultimately defeat the Taliban.

France has indicated a willingness to send more troops, but Germany has been adamant it cannot do more.

Britain, the second largest contributor to the 43,000-strong ISAF international peace force, is feeling intense pressure as its 7,000 soldiers — based mostly in southern Helmand province — battle increasingly fierce resistance and casualties rise.

Aside from the military campaign, Miliband and Burns stressed the need for greater effort on the civilian side.

Burns said he was worried that the civilian effort had been “disjointed” and hoped the appointment of a new United Nations envoy could help coordinate this. Afghan President Hamid Karzai rejected Britain’s Paddy Ashdown for the role.

Operation Desert Slaughter

Operation Desert Slaughter
Thoughts on Holocaust Memorial Day.
by Felicity Arbuthnot

Global Research, January 28, 2008

It is seventeen years since America and Britain embarked on their ‘Final Solution’ for the population of Iraq. The forty two day carpet bombing, enjoined by thirty two other countries, against a country of just twenty five million souls, with a youthful, conscript army, with broadly half the population under sixteen, and no air force, was just the beginning of a United Nations led, global siege of near mediaeval ferocity. Having, as James Baker boasted they would, reduced ‘Iraq to a pre-industrial age’, the country was denied all normality : trade, aid, telecommunications, power, sanitation, water repairs, seeds, foods, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment.

As I write, seventeen years ago, Iraq would be entering the second week of a barbaric, near twenty four hour a day, carpet bombing, which, then, as now (lest we forget - yet again) scrupulously ignored Protocol 1, Additional to the Geneva Convention of 1977: ‘It is prohibited to attack, destroy, remove or render useless objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, such as foodstuffs, agricultural areas for the production of foodstuffs, crops, livestock, drinking water installations and supplies such as irrigation works (denying them) to the civilian population or to the adverse Party … for any motive.’

The blitzkrieg on Iraq deliberately targeted all ‘indispensable to survival’.

Within twenty four hours, most was destroyed. The electricity went off within two hours, leaving patients on life support machines and vital equipment, babies in incubators, or those on oxygen to die. Refrigerators defrosted, all medicine needing refrigeration, blood banks and vital saline solutions for the injured were destroyed. Food rotted and between the bombing and the bank closures (latter for fear of looting) replacements were scarce to unbuyable.

In Najav, seventy dialysis patients, ‘old friends’, said the senior nurse in charge of the unit, died for want of electricity. The water supply was deliberately destroyed, parts denied subsequently by the pathetic, US-UK dominated Sanctions Committee - a Committee without a backbone between them - and remains lethal to this day.

This was the plan by US Central Command, it seems, all along. The destruction of Iraq’s water system has been described by Professor Nagy and Stephanie Miller as: ‘a slow motion holocaust’. Few could have put it better.

(See: How the US deliberately destroyed Iraq’s water. by Thomas J Nagy : http://www.globalresearch.ca/articles/NAG108A.html)

The telecommunications tower was also one of the earliest casualties, an elegant, soaring, structure on the edge of Baghdad’s Mansur district. It lay, broken and crumpled, as did the remains of those who worked inside it. Iraq was thus cut off from the world, the extent of the bombing and atrocities largely unknown for considerable time. Iraqis throughout the world had no way of knowing if their families, friends, loves, were dead or alive. Radio and television stations across Iraq were blitzed so no warnings to populus could be given (journalists too have special protection in wars, but decision makers, seemingly are not only illiterate, but ignore legalities.)

Hospitals, health clinics, schools and kindergartens were bombed, education eradicated so totally that the stores for educational materials, in buildings separate from the schools (usually in a central distribution point some miles away) were also bombed. Agriculture in all forms was deliberately targeted. Chicken farms bombed, flocks of sheep and goats, broadly half of all buffalo were killed, dairy farms obliterated. Crops, food processing factories reduced to rubble. A war crime stupendous in its immensity, for which not one murderous, genocidal, infanticidal, decision maker or pilot has stood trial.

Pharmaceutical factories were bombed, the medical syringe factory was destroyed. And in an especially psychotic policy, the countries who were Iraq’s trading partners and had built factories and installations for the country, bombed those which they had built. America’s gung-ho goons whooped over bombing the Pepsi and Coca Cola factories. ‘Bravery’ doesn’t come more deviant, sub-normal and retarded than that.

Due to the use of defoliants and napalm, half of all Iraq’s trees, including the great, ancient palms, died. Remaining palms did not bear their succulent fruit for about five years. In the tranquil, family farming settlements, amongst the palms, women and livestock alike aborted and often died. Survivors consistently described a ‘vapor’ coming from the ‘planes, then the horrific aftermath, affecting those living in the shelter of the palm groves or copses of trees, where dwellers settled for relative cool from Iraq’s searing summers. And, of course, in this decimation from above, which dropped more ordinance daily than was dropped daily in the second world war, five times more explosive power was dropped than on Hiroshima.

The weapons used were depleted uranium, which continues to irradiate Iraq and the region, the people, flora and fauna -and will continue to do so for four and a half billion years. ‘..protection of the natural environment against widespread, long term and severe damage’, is another absolute dictate under the Geneva Convention. It proscribes absolutely ‘… damage to the natural environment (prejucing) the health and survival of the population.’ Contraventions don’t come bigger than condemning inestimable generations yet unborn, to death and deformity. The Nuremberg Principles are exercised by the treatment of both civilians and prisoners and the: ‘… murder or ill treatment …of prisoners of war … further, extermination … and other inhuman acts against any civilian population’.

The ‘inhuman acts’, committed against the Iraqi people in 1991 constitute war crimes which, since no one was brought to justice, one can only hope haunt those responsible for all time.

The slaughter on the Basra Road, after the ceasefire, the fleeing civilians and retreating troops, ripped to pieces, or incinerated in General Norman Schwartzkop’s ‘turkey shoot’. The whole war, of course, was nothing else. Saddam Hussein had offered, indeed, started to retreat from Kuwait before the carnage began, but as ever, for the United States, conciliation was ‘too late’. Buses, lorries, cars were also targeted throughout the forty two day massacre. Lorries carrying medicines, meat, essentials were burned, with their drivers. Western troops took their repulsive ‘trophy photos’, with the pathetic remains of the incinerated and dismembered.

When the (UK) Observer, to its credit, printed the picture which became the symbol of the 1991 atrocities, the Iraqi soldier, with his near melted face welded to the windscreen of his vehicle, there was an outcry. The sensitivities of readers should not be exposed to such horrors. Maggie O’Kane, writing in the Guardian Weekly (16th December 1995) describes searingly, reality. Relatives, praying, hope against hope, that those they loved, had somehow miraculously survived the hadean inferno that was the Basra Road massacre. “On the day the war ended, at a bus station south of Baghdad, dusk was falling and the road was covered with weeping women.

The Iraqi survivors of the `turkey shoot’ on the Basra Road were crawling home with fresh running wounds. Their women were throwing themselves at the battered minibuses and trucks, pulling, pleading, begging. `Where is he, have you seen him ? Is he not with you ?’ Some fell to their knees on the road when they heard the news.

Others kept running from bus, to truck, to car, looking for their husbands, their sons or their lovers - the 37,000 Iraqi soldiers who would not come back. It went on all night and it was the most desperate and moving scene I have ever witnessed.” There was worse. Think of the excesses of horrors the Western media has deluged its readers with over the years, those perpetrated by people of other cultures, with other features: Stalin, Pol Pot, indeed Saddam Hussein and consider this in Maggie O’Kane’s article: ‘

When Sergeant Joe Queen returned to his home town of Bryson City North California, after the Gulf war, the first thing he saw was a huge banner draped outside Hardees Burger Restaurant, which read: `Welcome Home Joe Queen.’ Joe Queen, who’d been awarded a bronze star, wanted to chill out after the war, but Bryson City wouldn’t let him Joe, 19-years old, had gone straight from Desert Storm to become one of the first American troops to cross the Saudi border in an armored bulldozer. His job was to bury the Iraqis alive in their trenches and then cover over the trenches real smooth so the rest of the Big Red One, as The First Armored Mechanized Brigade is called, could come nice and easy behind him. ‘Joe Queen doesn’t know how many Iraqi troops he buried alive on the front line.

But five years later, in his military base in Georgia, he remembers well how it worked:

`The sand was so soft that once the blade hits the sand it just caves in right on the sides, so we never did go back and forth. So you are traveling at five, six, seven miles an hour just moving along the trench… You don’t see him. You’re up there in the half hatch and you know what you got to do. You did it so much you could close your eyes and do it… I don’t think they had any idea because the look on their faces as we came through the berm was just a look of shock. `While I was retreating, I saw some of the soldiers trying to surrender, but they were buried. There were two kinds of bulldozers, real ones, actual ones, and also they had tanks and they put something like a bulldozer blade in front of them. Some of the soldiers were walking towards the troops holding their arms up to surrender and the tanks moved in and killed them. They dug a hole in the ground and then they buried the soldiers and leveled it.’ One survivor described the friends buried alive, who he had laughed with, eaten with …’I really don’t know how to describe it. We were friends. I ate with some of them. I talked to some of them. I cannot express how I felt at that moment….. I saw one soldier and his body was just torn apart by a bulldozer. The upper part was on one side and the lower on the other side.’

I hope your nightmares and those of your colleagues haunt for all time Joe Queen. May the specter of those for whose live burial you and your murderous colleagues were responsible, follow in all your footsteps, for all time.

These mass graves also carry the names of the leaders who ordered the decimation of Iraq in 1991,their military Commanders and soldiers, on every one of them. Ironically, the mass graves of Saddam Hussein have seemingly not materialized, just war graves and those from the uprising encouraged by the US and UK at the end of the 1991 decimation. The war, of course, never ended. The thirteen year subsequent embargo cost maybe one and a quarter million lives.

Additionally, the US and UK, bombed Iraq (illegally) until the (illegal) invasion of 2003. In 2002, they stepped up their destruction of life, limb and of entire housing projects with families within, children playing, doing homework, flocks of sheep and goats with their child shepherds. ‘Approximately a year before the United States initiated Operation Southern Focus, as a change to its response strategy, by increasing the overall number of missions and selecting targets throughout the no-fly zones to disrupt the military command structure in Iraq. The weight of bombs dropped increased from none in March 2002 and 0.3 in April 2002 to between 8 and 14 tons per month in May-August, reaching a pre-war peak of 54.6 tons in September 2002.’ (Wikipedia.)

A recent study by the Centre for Public Integrity, has also uncovered lies of impeachable stature, leading to invasion, by the Bush Administration..

‘The study counted 935 false statements in the two-year period. It found that in speeches, briefings, interviews and other venues, Bush and administration officials stated unequivocally on at least 532 occasions that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or was trying to produce or obtain them, or had links to al Qaeda, or both. ‘Bush led with 259 false statements, 231 about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 28 about Iraq’s links to al Qaeda, the study found. That was second only to Powell’s 244 false statements about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and 10 about Iraq and al Qaeda.’ (http://www.publicintegrity.org)Iraq’s post invasion (2003-2007) excess under five mortality has been estimated at over one million. In Afghanistan, post invasion, at 1.9 million (2001-2007.)

For another humanitarian abomination of our time, the Israeli siege of the Gaza strip (June 2007 and ongoing) total excess death figures are elusive. CIA figures for infant mortality, however (2004) are woeful at 23.54 per thousand births. Sweden (2007) just 2.76 per thousand births. Given Israel’s withdrawal of electricity and just about all needed to sustain life since last June, some serious statistical data is needed - and relentless and absolute demands for humanity and human rights for our global neighbors in Gaza, Iraq and Afghanistan, the forgotten of Lebanon’s ‘Simmer Rain’ decimation, by ‘we the people …’ Like Joe Queen’s genocidal actions, the atrocities committed in these countries are being carried out in our name. ‘Silence is complicity’. (For much more shameful complicity - since 1950 - please see Dr Gideon Polya: ‘Body Count’, an academic, key and indispensable work: http://www.globalbodycount.blogspot.com)‘There was no one left to kill’, declared General Norman Schwartzkopf after the Basra Road bloodbath, where even the injured holding white flags, and doctors accompanying them were obliterated. ‘Morally, we won’, an Iraqi doctor told me shortly afterwards. Indeed. ‘We are the new Jews’, is an oft heard, Arab refrain now.

As I write, on Holocaust Memorial Day, it is impossible not to reflect that is does not take forced labor camps, forced transport and Zyclon B to create a holocaust. When the figures of the dead in Iraq, Afghanistan and Gaza, reach six million, as the world stands by, will they too get their own Holocaust Memorial Day? Will we all, regardless of color or creed, ever learn, before it is too late?

LaRouche Webcast: Six Months Into the Greatest Financial Crash Ever (Transcript)

Lyndon LaRouche delivered the following hour-long keynote, and then fielded questions for two more hours at an international webcast from Washington, D.C., sponsored by the LaRouche Political Action Committee on Jan. 17, 2008. The webcast was moderated by LaRouche’s national spokeswoman Debra Freeman.

Debra Freeman: Good afternoon. On behalf of the LaRouche Political Action Committee, I’d like to welcome all of you to today’s international webcast. As I think many of our listeners may recall, it was approximately six months ago, during a similar webcast, on July 25, that Mr. LaRouche made clear that we were in a situation, not where we were facing an impending financial collapse, but that in fact the financial collapse was under way. Within days of that webcast, Mr. LaRouche was proven absolutely correct, by a chain of events that occurred. On July 28, Countrywide Financial, which is the nation’s biggest mortgage lender, announced a 33% drop in profits, and it’s been nothing but bad news ever since then. Two days after that, American Home Mortgage, another major lender, which specialized in subprime mortgages, collapsed. By July 31, the subprime mortgage crisis was on the front page of every newspaper in the United States.

Mr. LaRouche was 100% right in forecasting the collapse. He was 100% right, when he said that the collapse had occurred. And here we are, six months later, with the debris from that collapse hitting on a daily basis. As a result of a national and international mobilization, the willingness to deal with that crisis, at least the willingness to admit that that collapse is under way, has begun to permeate political circles. Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign stands as probably the only Presidential campaign, or at least the only one that I’m aware of, that has been prepared to put this front and center. And while that is useful, they have still failed to address the causes of the crisis, or the real solutions.

I think that today’s webcast is one in which Mr. LaRouche, as he has been doing repeatedly at these international webcasts, will provide a pathway, whereby people can gain greater understanding of what it is we are facing, as a nation, as a world, indeed, as a civilization. And I believe, knowing Mr. LaRouche as I do, that he’ll also provide a pathway to solving it.

So ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, let me present to you, Lyndon LaRouche.

The Crisis Is Manageable

Lyndon LaRouche: Thank you.

The presentation and discussion which is going to occur now, will be for most of you, one of the most important things in your lives—the issues. Because we are at a point, not of an ordinary crisis, not of a financial crisis, not of a mere depression, but of a global breakdown crisis, centered in the trans-Atlantic community, especially the English-speaking trans-Atlantic community, which will radiate, if it’s not stopped, to bring every part of the world into a general breakdown of their respective social systems. This is one of the greatest moments, in terms of importance, in history, since the 14th Century in Europe, with its new dark age, and since similar events, like the collapse of the Roman Empire, or the collapse of the Byzantine Empire: This is the kind of period we’re living in. And the danger from this crisis is greater than probably any of the precedents, other than the collapse of the Roman Empire itself.

This is momentarily a collapse. Each day, now, since Jan. 3, the crisis has been expanding in magnitude, at an accelerating rate. What you think is the extent of the crisis today, if the measures I propose are not taken, will become much worse, by an order of magnitude in the next week, and the week after that, and the week after that, until the whole system grinds into a collapse, probably some time during this year. And I’m talking about a global collapse, not a collapse just of the trans-Atlantic English-speaking community. But the thing is centered obviously in the trans-Atlantic English-speaking community. That’s where the source of the infection is, from which it spreads. And that’s what we have to deal with.

We also have to deal with another problem, apart from an economic problem: a problem of idiocy, which permeates the highest ranks of the Senate, and other locations, among all so-called leading economists, today. There are a few exceptions here and there. But on this question, of this crisis, except for a few people in the woodwork that I know about, there is no public expression of any comprehension of what this crisis is about, or any comprehension of what the remedies are.

Now, let me say, on that point specifically, that the primary crisis before us, immediately, is twofold: On the one hand, it’s an international monetary-financial crisis, in which the collapse of the entire world international monetary system could be completed within a time as early as this year, and even sometime earlier in this year, because that’s the way human events are. You can not predict the day in which that collapse would occur, but the collapse is already ongoing. And none of the governments in existence today, has any efficient comprehension of adopting measures which would actually deal with this crisis.

The crisis is manageable. It’s not simply solvable: You can not simply turn back the clock and get good times back again, where you had them before. But you can bring the thing under control. And the problem I wish to address today, specifically, is the measures of control which the government of the United States and other governments must take now!, if they’re going to save civilization. This is doom-time. And often in human history, it was possible up to a certain point, to prevent a civilization from disintegrating into chaos. We’re in such a situation now.

But if we don’t take the measures, this civilization will collapse into chaos this year. If we understand these measures and are willing to take them, we can manage the crisis, through cooperation among nations, which agree on certain principles. That’s always been possible. But if we do not do that, we are living on the brink of one of the great dark ages in all human existence, globally.

‘This Is Big-Time’

So: What I’ll do in the course of today’s remarks—I’ve portioned things into two sections, because I can anticipate from certain leading circles in our political system and elsewhere, that there will be certain questions addressed to me, through Debbie, which will either identify themselves, or will identify themselves categorically, by their profession or by their interest. But some of them are very highly sensitive, and the questions will come to me, not with their name attached to it, but with the category that they represent involved. And what I’m addressing most immediately, are certain leading political and other circles, inside the United States and internationally, which need to know what I know, and they do not yet know, and to make that clear.

So this is big-time. This is not small-time.

We also have a big problem of a bankruptcy of ideas and mentality among a dominant section of our culture. The more influential part of our upper 20% of family-income brackets are crazy, and corrupt. Especially the generation now between 50 and 65 years of age. That is the generation which is the most disoriented and most corrupt, especially certain influentials.

So therefore, the problem is that some of the people, including in the major press, major publications, mass media generally, and so forth, on this question, are either outrightly lying or incapable of telling the truth, because they couldn’t know where to find it. And they are the most influential voices you hear, so far, from the U.S. Senate, from leaders of the House of Representatives—not all leaders, but the ones who are the most vocal and most reported—and from most Presidential candidates. They are all, by my book, idiots, and worse; because their opinions are worse than worthless. If their opinions were to prevail, the whole country will go to Hell; that I can guarantee you.

Therefore, what we’re in the process of doing, which I’m particularly in the process of doing, is, being a veteran Presidential campaigner, and of some international significance: I am not running for President, but I am running to create the situation on which the coming President of the United States, if properly selected, will take the steps which are necessary on behalf of the United States, to enter into cooperation on these principles with other nations, and under those conditions, this planet can survive, civilization can survive. We can recover again. This is not as easy as Franklin Roosevelt faced with the Great Depression. This is a much tougher problem, a much more dangerous, deeper corruption than that. And so, the precedents from that period, while valuable to us today as a lesson, are not a prescription by imitation for solving this problem.

The greatest problem we have, is the incumbent President of the United States, and the number of idiots, both Democratic and Republican, in the Congress, including the Senate, who think like they do. That’s our biggest problem. Because what we need at this moment, looking back at our history, we are in a moment, that we need a Franklin Roosevelt as President. And what we have as a Presidency today has no resemblance to that, whatsoever. As a matter of fact, the question of species is also in doubt.

So therefore, it requires a special effort. The effort will, however, come in the course of the campaign—a critical point. Because if one or two figures, who are Presidential candidates, or pre-candidates at this point, step forward, as Hillary Clinton has made a step in that direction—if they step forward to take charge of the leadership of the parties going into their Presidential nomination procedures, then they will become a focal point of leadership, to counter the idiot who occupies the White House today. That’s our best shot. And people from abroad will observe that, because they will say, “Yes, you have interesting ideas. It would be nice if the United States would do that.” But, will the United States do that, considering the idiot we have in the White House today? And with the Cheney hanging around his neck. And with a Speaker of the House, Pelosi, who seems to be owned by a notable fascist, and is doing everything to sabotage what needs to be done to save this nation? And similar problems in the Senate.

So therefore, the first thing we have to address is the fact of a general incompetence in dealing with a specific problem we must solve, and also a massive corruption, political and moral corruption, within relevant parts of the upper 20% of our family-income brackets, notably those in politics. That’s our problem.

Therefore, I could say the following, just as an example: You could imagine two politicians trained in economics. They jump out of an airplane, to take a parachute to the ground—but they have forgotten their parachutes. The first one says, “I think we’re in for it.” The other one says, “Don’t believe any of those conspiracy theories. We’re going to make it. We’ll bounce back.” And you’ll get that from a lot of them, today.

The British Empire ‘Slime-Mold’

Now, let’s go back in American history to a point, which should be a point of reference today—it doesn’t contain the solution, but it contains the suggestion of what the solution might be: Franklin Roosevelt, as President. Franklin Roosevelt as President saved the United States, by returning the United States to its Constitution. Measures by Roosevelt were in accord with the principle of the Constitution. The Presidents who preceded him, since the assassination of McKinley, including Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Roosevelt, Hoover, Coolidge, so forth, had actually been the enemies of the best interests of the United States, operating from the top level of the United States.

The problem that Roosevelt faced, was a problem of the British Empire. Now, the British Empire is not really a monarchy. It’s a slime-mold: That is, it is a collection—and this has been the case since the beginning of the British Empire in 1763, with the Peace of Paris—an international financier cartel, largely of Anglo-Dutch denomination, but essentially bankers in the Venetian tradition, a slime-mold. They kill each other by night, and they gang up together against the human race in the morning. This is the type.

In 1763, this slime-mold, this international financial gang, took over Britain, at a time that Britain had been the victor in a war it orchestrated, called the Seven Years’ War. What Britain had done, which is typical Liberal practice, is to defeat all its rivals on the continent of Europe, by inducing them to make war against each other. So Britain sat back, while Russia, and France, and Prussia, and other countries, fought each other, and came down in ruins, with the Peace of Paris, in which the British came in and collected the remains. It was the British East India Company, who collected the remains. The British monarchy is not the controlling force inside the British Empire. The controlling force is a slime-mold, called the Anglo-Dutch Liberal financial establishment. They run the empire. They are not necessarily British citizens; they’re often Dutch, they are French, they’re Venetian, they’re New York bankers. George Shultz, for example, the guy who sank the Roosevelt monetary system, is part of this. He’s a fascist. So’s Rohatyn. Rohatyn’s a fascist. It’s not a term, it’s a species designation.

And what we’re faced with today, and with the Bloomberg game, is the attempt to establish a Presidency of the United States, under Bloomberg and Schwarzenegger (whose father gave him fascist credentials by birth) to establish a dictatorship in the United States, modelled immediately on that which was used by the British to create Mussolini as a dictator in Italy, the same British circles which put Hitler into power in Germany. This is the problem. We are faced with a threat of tyranny beyond belief, by this crowd. And this is what the British Empire is: It’s the Anglo-Dutch Liberal system, which is a system of international finance, which in respect to each other are predatory. They eat each other, and they eat each other’s children. But then, they gang up against all of the rest of us, and play us for fools.

For example, who started the war in Iraq, the last war in Iraq, that’s now still ongoing? It was done by the Tony Blair government of England. Tony Blair orchestrated it. Remember the case of David Kelly? The key figure inside the United States was Dick Cheney, but not really Dick; it’s his wife. His wife is the one who picked him out of the swamp, got him jobs, got him positions, and she’s the terror who runs him. She’s a British agent, a Fabian, part of the Fabian Society, the same thing that Tony Blair represents. So, you had American accomplices of the British Empire—which is not the British monarchy, it’s the slime-mold of British or Anglo-Dutch finance—orchestrated a war in Iraq, in Southwest Asia, to destroy the United States by inducing it to destroy itself! Just in the same way that the Anglo-Dutch Liberals set up, in the early part of the 18th Century, a war called the Seven Years’ War, in which the powers of Continental Europe chopped at each other. And the British came in and collected the remains, the Anglo-Dutch Liberals.

In our midst—if you think that Felix Rohatyn is an advisor to any leading figure, you should fire that leading figure, should be fired from office, particularly from the position of Speaker of the House. Because they represent a danger to the United States, as great as a traitor in a high position during warfare. She, under the influence, is a poor patsy, a poor, dumb patsy, controlled by Felix Rohatyn, who has done the most to destroy the United States House of Representatives, during her term of service, since she gained that position. These are the kinds of problems we face.

Roosevelt Used the Constitution To Save the U.S.A.

Now, go back to, again as I said, to Roosevelt: Roosevelt came into the Presidency at a point that we hadn’t had—with the exception of Taft, in a sense, and Harding, who were questionable figures—we hadn’t had an honest President since the British killed McKinley, in order to bring Teddy Roosevelt into the Presidency. Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Coolidge, Hoover, so forth, were problems. We were almost destroyed by this. We were still a powerful nation at that time; we were almost destroyed.

Roosevelt came along. Now, Roosevelt was a descendant of a New York banker by the name of Isaac Roosevelt, who had been a collaborator of Alexander Hamilton, in his time. And Roosevelt did not stumble around, and did not innovate in some curious manner, did not violate the Constitution, but he used the Constitution precisely, and followed it, in order to organize an effort to save the United States from itself, and from what previous Presidents had done to the United States. He saved the United States. He did more than save the United States: At the time he came in, the British ruling class, including the British monarchy itself, had not only put Mussolini into power in Italy, but had put Hitler into power in Germany. Who created Hitler? It was not Germans, it was Brits. They organized it. They insisted upon it.

When Roosevelt became President, this underwent some degree of change. Roosevelt took emergency measures which were based on the U.S. Constitution. And today, we should follow exactly those precedents that Roosevelt used then, that are constitutional precedents. His constitutional conceptions are constitutional. What exists now, as a so-called “constitutional” interpretation of these matters, is not constitutional: It is something imported from abroad. This is not our Constitution.

Remember, our Constitution is derived, primarily, immediately, from the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia, the Peace of Westphalia. This was the foundation of a commitment among nations to the modern, sovereign nation-state by those nations, in 1648. This ended a long period of religious warfare, which had been induced by Venetian interests, from 1492, the Expulsion of the Jews from Spain, by the Grand Inquisitor, through the end of the war in Europe in 1648, the Thirty Years’ War.

This agreement, prompted by a great Cardinal Mazarin, from France—actually an Italian, but he was stuck in there by the Pope—and this agreement on the Peace of Westphalia, on the “benefit of the other,” that each people and each nation must devote itself primarily to the benefit of other nations, and by doing so, to create a bond among nations, in cooperation among nations, by which these kinds of problems can be cured.

We can not eliminate the nation-state; we do not need a Tower of Babel. Because the ability of a people to govern itself depends upon its culture. And without that culture, a people can not be self-governing. So therefore, you can not impose law upon nations, simply by just imposing law upon them. You must work through the culture of that nation, the culture of its people, and have their willful consent to cooperation of the type needed to fulfill the intentions specified by the 1648 Peace of Westphalia.

This is embedded in our Constitution, in the citation from Leibniz, in the Declaration of Independence: the “pursuit of Happiness,” which was Leibniz’s attack on the Liberal theory. Liberalism is not U.S. philosophy, not constitutional philosophy: Liberalism is rejected in U.S. constitutional philosophy. This principle of the “pursuit of Happiness” which Benjamin Franklin and others took from a book by Leibniz, was expressed as the great Preamble of our Constitution, the so-called Bill of Rights. And this principle of our Preamble is our fundamental law. And that is the law which is the interpretation imposed on every other aspect of our constitutional system. The Preamble of the Constitution is our fundamental law! Which expresses, echoes the Declaration of Independence, but is our constitutional law, as a Federal Republic. Every other part of the Constitution is subject to interpretation according to the specifications of that Preamble. That’s our law. That was the law understood by Franklin Roosevelt.

The Federal Power of Bankruptcy

We also have another feature of our Constitution, which is different than anything you find in Europe, or at least in western and central Europe: We do not believe in monetary systems, constitutionally. The United States system is not constitutionally a monetary system. European systems are monetary systems, based on parliamentary government. There is no moral principle controlling. There are moral principles adopted in constitutions in Europe, but the essential thing is not there. In the U.S. Constitution, the creation of money, and the regulation of money is a function of the Federal government. The issuance of money is done by the consent of the House of Representatives, and enacted by the Treasury Department, under the direction of the President. It is unlawful to create money, or a form of money, in the United States, except by the Federal government, and except according to this principle, this constitutional principle. We are not a monetary system! Not constitutionally. We are a Federal Republic, and we have a credit system, which is based upon the constitutional principle reflected in our system of the creation of credit.

We also have, under the same term, as a Federal government, the power of bankruptcy. And this power of bankruptcy is very important at this time, because without exerting it, you’re not going to save the United States. And if you can’t save the United States, you’re not going to save the rest of the world.

That means: That most of the outstanding debt, represented by financial interests, as claims upon the United States, its territories, and its people, will be put by the Federal government, into bankruptcy receivership. What should be paid, in the short term, will be paid. What should be supported in the short term, will be supported. But those sums we can not afford to pay, we shall not pay. We shall proceed under bankruptcy law, under our Federal law, to put the entire system, of money and related things, into receivership. If we do that, other countries will do it, too.

Now, what I’ve proposed, as you know, is that four powers in this planet must come together to share a policy, an initiative, which will save this planet from a general collapse. These four powers are, the United States (despite the idiot in the White House now); Russia, China, and India. Because, if these four nations agree on a relevant policy, not only will other nations join them, automatically, other nations, which are smaller nations, will join them in common interest. But we will solve the problem. We can organize a recovery of the world economic system, by reorganization of its financial system. We will return to a principle, if we agree among these nations, under which the same principle that applies to the U.S. Constitution, in terms of money, applies there: We will create a fixed-exchange-rate system, echoing what Roosevelt intended before he died—and I’ll explain what that significance, “before he died” is.

We will therefore have a system under which loans outstanding can not fluctuate in the interest rates upon them, but will be kept within payable limits. Because, in general with the world economy as it is today, if the interest rate on long-term loans exceeds 2%, you’re going to have a collapsed economy. Because you can not afford, in today’s productivity, to have higher rates of interest in general, for long-term capital and related improvements. Therefore, you must have a fixed-exchange-rate system. That does not mean a gold-based system, but it does mean that we probably would do the same thing with gold that Roosevelt did with gold: We will consider it, not as a monetary asset, but as a means for settling accounts among sovereign national powers. And thus, to use that power, to maintain a counter-inflationary stability in long-term investments among nations.

If we don’t do that, if we’re unwilling to do just exactly that, there is no chance that the world civilization as we know it, in its present organized form, will continue to exist, as long as the remainder of this year. Because the rate of acceleration of decadence, of collapse, that is now built into the system, will accelerate to such a degree, that we can not determine on what date the system disintegrates, but it will be soon.

Mobilizing the Base

So the question is: Can we find in the United States, in particular, can we find a group of people, especially leading figures, who will come together to do what I have prescribed on this account?

Now what we’re doing right now, we are mobilizing the base: The problem has been, that since the corruption from the top down, in the Senate and the House of Representatives, the corruption typified by that expressed by Nancy Pelosi, the stooge for the fascist Felix Rohatyn, that has prevented the Houses of Congress from functioning. They don’t function. There are people in there who would like to function. There are good people in there, but they don’t function. Because the system of “go along to get along” doesn’t permit them to function properly under these conditions. With proper leadership in the Senate, and proper leadership in the House, yes, they would function. We’ve got to, first of all, change the Speaker of the House, right away. Otherwise, you don’t care much about the United States. If you care about the United States, you will say that she needs to go, into some peaceful retirement, where her limited mental powers will find a proper realization.

So, thus, in this way, we had to go to a lower income-bracket section of the population. We went to the states and localities, working on the state level, to campaign for an action, which I prescribed, which if it is not implemented exactly as I have prescribed, means the doom of the nation. This is the Homeowners and Bank Protection Act. If that act is not instituted, in exactly the method I have specified, without changes, the system won’t survive: We’re finished.

Now, what we have now, is a growing mass support in the base of the population, on the state level, for that act. That the people in the Senate and the Congress are increasingly aware of the pressure coming from the states, in our mobilization for support of this act—to be implemented precisely as I have prescribed, without changes.

Why? Let me explain this act: The bankruptcy of homeowners, or nominal homeowners, can not be allowed. And we can not solve the problem by selective bailouts of some people. It won’t work. You have to have a national freeze on foreclosures. Now, that has been picked up by some political figures, such as Bill Clinton and his wife. And so far, that’s good. But that’s not enough, as I think they know. You also have to protect the bankers simultaneously, and in the same act. Why? Because mortgages, if they’re legitimate, and orderly mortgages, not some kind of fly-by-night thing, are related to banks: to chartered banks, to chartered Federal banks, to chartered state banks. These banks are now in danger of collapse and liquidation.

Therefore, you can not simply suspend these mortgages by themselves: You’ve got to put the banks under protection, in exactly the same act! If you don’t put the bank under protection, your attempt to defend the mortgages will do no good. And if you allow the thing to continue, where the banks are being chewed up, now—by disreputable things that should be written off entirely—are being looted. As in the recent round of trying to buy out some of these hedge-fund operations which should not have been saved. They should be collapsed! Write them off the books! They’re not worth anything.

We’ve got to save the homeowners. We’ve got to keep them in their houses. We’ve got to keep the communities stable. We’ve got to protect the local banks. Because, if the local, regular banks, the honest banks, are not able to conduct business, the whole economy of any part of the country will proceed to disintegrate! If you are not prepared to defend the homeowners, and the banks, the legitimate banks, in the same Federal act of bankruptcy, using bankruptcy law as the means of doing it, you aren’t worth anything! And you should stop talking. Stop babbling. That’s the only way you can save this system.

That is not all that’s required. If we stabilize the United States politically, by the Homeowners and Bank Protection Act, then we open the door for the next required steps, which is to change national policy, probably in this time I would change it through leading pre-Presidential candidates. What you need, is an organizing voice, or more organizing voices, to get something moving behind this. If leading candidates defend the Homeowners and Bank Protection Act, as prescribed, we can save this nation. But that’s only the first step towards saving this nation.

Europe Needs a Lender of Last Resort

The next step is to proceed on the international level. And that means, the President of the United States has to go to Russia, to China, and to India, and to other countries, and to propose a treaty agreement, a draft treaty agreement, which is equitable, which establishes a fixed-exchange-rate system. And this will probably bring nearly everybody in, if you do it.

For example, in Europe, as my wife has explained to people—she’s German, and she knows about Germany, which many Germans don’t; but she also has her contact with German experts and French experts and so forth—and has been conducting a discussion, an intensive discussion, on the question of the Lender of Last Resort. Now, the reason that Continental Europe is absolutely doomed today, under its present conditions, is there is no lender of last resort under the Maastricht Treaty and implementation. You have to reverse and cancel the Maastricht Treaty, to save Europe! And all it takes is a couple of countries who are key countries, to break out of the Maastricht Treaty, and it will disintegrate of its own accord.

In that case, then Germany, Italy, France, and so forth, will be forced to return to the principle of the lender of last resort, which is their own national government, their own constitutional government. Once they agree to return to this principle, then we can talk to Russia, to China, and India, in terms of long-term trade agreements, we’re talking about 25-to-50-year trade agreements, for infrastructure, all these kinds of things. And we can have a program of expansion of the economy, development, which will give us a perspective of long-term recovery.

Once we decide, under treaty agreements of that sort, that we are going to survive, over the coming 50 years, then we shall survive. Because we will then make the decisions and be able to make the agreements which enable us to accomplish the common aims of mankind. And that’s our function on that account.

Now, there are several things that have to be dealt with to clean up the garbage which is left over from the past. Go back to FDR. Now, there are two views of what the Bretton Woods Agreement was. One view, which is little known today, is the intention of Franklin Roosevelt, and that intention was very clearly declared, repeatedly, by Franklin Roosevelt, while he was President, especially during the war: President Roosevelt’s intention for the Bretton Woods system, was a breakup of the British Empire. Roosevelt was committed—as I was at the time, I was in military service at the time—he was committed to the liberation of all territories from colonial occupation or oppression; and also the elimination of what we call semi-colonialism. That was his intention.

The British, and Winston Churchill, had a fit about that. And as soon as we had breached the wall in France, in the invasion of Continental Europe, immediately, those banking interests, in London and in the United States—like the Harriman bank, which had initially put Hitler into power in Germany, and also had put Mussolini into power in Italy—these banks, which had created Fascism, on the continent of Europe, with the participation of certain U.S. bankers, Wall Street bankers of the same type which I’m fighting today, like Shultz, and Harriman, and so forth—these guys made a right turn. And the British policy was to prevent the war from being won too quickly at that point.

Therefore, the war was sabotaged. For example, you had a General Montgomery, who was probably the worst commander in World War II, who ran an operation with the First Army, which screwed everything up, and prolonged the war for at least six to seven months. Other things were done, to try to eliminate the Roosevelt perspective for the post-war world. And the issue was largely expressed between Churchill and Roosevelt. Roosevelt would talk to Churchill, and say, “Winston! We are not going to do this! We’re not going to put up with this any more! We’re going into a world without colonialism, without people being oppressed by other people. We’re going to the American System, of the conception of independent, sovereign nation-states. And every people has to have the right to have a development, a self-development, of a sovereign nation-state.”

Oh! Churchill wanted none of that! He was out to defend the British Empire. So, as soon as Roosevelt was safely dead, Churchill’s friends—take the case of Indo-China: Indo-China had won its independence in warfare, under Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh had been cooperating with the United States in that struggle. With Roosevelt now dead, the British ordered the Japanese to come out of the prison camps where they had been held in Indo-China, to be re-armed, and to occupy the country which had just been liberated from them. And the entire history of the Indo-China War since that time, was that creation.

A similar operation was run in Indonesia. There was a very effective liberation movement in Indonesia against the Dutch imperialism. The British backed that, with armed forces, a war that went on for some time, and created the mess which we suffer still today.

Similar things were done in the split-up of India, in the Pakistan-India split—and it was a horrible scene to see, the way it occurred. This was done, by the British.

Africa was given liberation, but not liberation: They were given the title to liberation, but no power to run their countries. Similar kind of thing.

Similar efforts were made in Central and South America. So that when this Bretton Woods agreement was presented, by Franklin Roosevelt, the intention had been to use the power of the U.S. military, that is the economic power, to convert the military power into economic power, for machine tools and similar kinds of development, to assist not only war-ravaged Western Europe, but also the nations which had been colonized or semi-colonized, to be liberated and developed, by converting the war-production capability of the United States to a peace-production capability, for the needs of these people. We proposed to make a world free of imperialism and its vestiges. That was Roosevelt’s policy.

When Roosevelt died, immediately, Truman, who was an agent of the British in terms of his connections, moved to sabotage everything that Roosevelt had represented, in terms of this post-war policy of decolonization. The post-war policy of the Truman Administration was re-colonization. A British policy of recolonization.

FDR’s Bretton Woods System Was Anti-British

Now, despite these changes, the United States continued on its internal economic policy, in the same direction, until the assassination of President Kennedy. And it was not just the assassination of President Kennedy that was key, it was the fact that his successor, Johnson, was terrified. And because Johnson was terrified, Johnson supported the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which got us into the Indo-China War.

The Indo-China War, a long war, like the Peloponnesian War, destroyed the United States, or destroyed the United States’ economy, and so undermined it, that in 1971, the Bretton Woods system disintegrated under Nixon.

Now, the other view of the Bretton Woods system was that of Keynes. Keynes was at the 1944 conference of the Bretton Woods convention, and did submit a proposal. Now, people who don’t know their history, will say that the Bretton Woods system was designed by Keynes. Not so. The Bretton Woods system was an anti-British, anti-colonialist position. What happened with the death of Roosevelt, was that Truman and Co., were able with their fascist friends in New York, like the Harrimans and so forth—the same people who had put Hitler into power earlier—to turn it into the “Keynesian” alternative. So therefore, Roosevelt’s Bretton Woods system is made clear by his own testimony: This was an anti-colonialist system. The Keynesian system was a colonialist copy.

But nonetheless, despite the fact that this was merely a colonialist copy, in the United States, we maintained, internally, an economic system which was very much like the intention of Roosevelt. We maintained that up until the death of Kennedy, when things began to go bad at the time, after Kennedy had been killed. So therefore, today, when people say the “Keynesian system,” that’s a way of covering up the fact of this.

So, we maintained a protectionist economy, up through Kennedy, up through Kennedy’s Presidency, and lost it rapidly after that point, especially after 1968.

Then, in 1971, we lost our honor; we lost everything. The British took over, through George Shultz, the same George Shultz who, in the same period of time, put a fascist dictator, Pinochet, into power in South America, in Chile. The same George Shultz who owns Schwarzenegger today (whose father was a real Nazi), who ran a Nazi-aided operation in the Southern Cone of Americas during the first half of the 1970s. And has not improved his morals since that time—or Schwarzenegger’s either.

So this is what the issue is. We had a system, which is the Roosevelt Constitutional system, for decolonization of the world. Now if we look at things today, look at Asia and Africa, and the struggles in South America and Central America, you see a similar situation. The mission, the long-term mission for humanity now, if we get out of this crisis, is to fix this problem: We have large populations in Asia, most of whom are extremely poor. By their own unaided means, they could not solve the problems as they must be solved. However, with international cooperation, long-term cooperation, long-term agreements, the development of infrastructure, the development of other things needed. For example: The need for the thorium cycle of fission power, in India. India’s a very poor country. It has some people in it, who are not so poor. But 70% are desperately poor, and their condition of life is worsening. Without thorium-cycle nuclear power, India can not in practice recover from this mess.

China has a similar problem. It has certain technological progress, certain achievements, but it also has vast needs of development. This requires nuclear power; it requires cooperation in infrastructure. It requires long-term agreements. The same thing is true of all of these countries, of the world. We need these long-term agreements, which must be treaty agreements, based on a fixed-exchange-rate system, like that of Franklin Roosevelt’s design for the Bretton Woods system. That’s what’s required. And therefore, what we do is move from an act like the Homeowners and Bank Protection Act, to stabilize the U.S. economy sufficiently, to begin to move on the other things, to give us the room to move on the other things we must move to—including immediate long-term agreements, starting no later than January of the coming year, with the nations I indicated: the United States, Russia, China, and India. We must have a long-term agreement, or series of treaty agreements, with those and with other nations, which govern the way we are going to develop this planet economically, for the future of humanity! For a thousand or two thousand years to come.

Defending the principle of sovereignty of a people, because a people has embedded in its culture, its language, or the use of its language, it has the deeper aspects of mentation. A people that’s denied that, and is supposed to speak an argot, moving from one country to another, and speaking some kind of a pidgin—they lack that cultural continuity of development, and the people are turned into virtual slaves, or approximations of that. So, we know that we must maintain national sovereignty, national cultural sovereignty among nations. And therefore, national sovereignty must be expressed in terms of cooperation among sovereigns, to develop long-term agreements on common objectives, for up to a thousand years or so to come. That’s what we require.

And that is what should be laid on the table of the next President of the United States, properly selected.

LaRouche’s ‘Triple Curve’

Now, let’s go to the first of these Triple Curves, to explain where I come in on this thing [Figure 1]. This was something which I first produced, actually in the end of 1995, and published for the first time in January of 1996. It was published as a feature of my pre-Presidential election campaign that year. And what it describes is the actuality at that time, of the U.S. financial-economic situation. The three values are simply: you have the issue of money, Monetary Aggregate, issued by governments or by other means, other agencies. You have also then, the generation of Financial Assets, as distinct from just simply money assets, which are related to monetary assets. You also then must compare this with the per-capita, per-square-kilometer productive powers of labor, in physical terms, including infrastructure, as well as other aspects of productivity.

Now, what has been happening, especially at an accelerating rate, since 1971 in particular, and at an accelerated since 1987, since October of 1987, has been an increasing decrease of the physical output per capita of the population of the United States, per capita and per square kilometer. What has been happening at the same time, is this has been sustained, as especially under Greenspan, by an accelerating rate of monetary emission. The U.S. government, in various forms, has been extending the emission.

Now the emission has been used by a multiplier factor, which is insane, to increase the rate of financial aggregates outstanding. So now, you see an accelerating rate of financial aggregates’ growth, relative to an accelerating rate of decline of physical production. For example: infrastructure. The New York streets, for example, under Bloomberg. The New York streets are collapsing under Bloomberg. Maybe it’s an expression of their dislike for the man!

Now then, we come to a second one, a second case, which I published in 2000 [Figure 2]. There was a change that occurred that time, in which the United States entered into a long-term, deep, depression. This happened before George Bush was able to pollute the White House, that is, George Bush, Jr. But what had happened was, you had the rate of monetary aggregates, that you had to generate to sustain the financial explosion, and financial aggregates expanded. So, as a result of that, with a continued collapse of the physical output, per capita and per square kilometer, you had entered into a collapse phase of the U.S. economy, a terminal collapse phase. So, by the time Bush came in, as President, in January of 2001, the United States economy was already doomed under its existing policy. It was doomed to collapse at an accelerating rate, over the period of the decade. And it did.

That’s the problem we have to fix. We have a bankrupt system, which is inherently bankrupt, in which the amount of monetary aggregate being generated to bail out, as you see the bailouts occurring today, to bail out an inflated, explosive mass of financial aggregate, has reached the point that it is now going to accelerate at such a rate, that the question is, whether the U.S. economy, under its present policies, will outlive this current year. People who think they have money, are going to find they don’t have any. People who thought they had vast savings, will find out they don’t have any. That’s the kind of world we’re living in.

And idiots out there, are saying, we’re going to induce a palliative to some homeowners, we’re going to “stimulate the economy.” “Stimulate?” What’s that mean? More monetary aggregate! That’s like putting more fuel in the fire, in the forest fire! The worst thing you can do. You have to go back to the Roosevelt idea, the Roosevelt conception. Put the system under bankruptcy, put it under control, and some things will have to go into negotiation, and some things will be paid; and that decision will be made on the nature of national interest and human interest, and human rights. That’s our only chance.

Now, most people have a problem with this, including people who may be asking questions not too distant from now. “I don’t understand it,” they will say. “I don’t understand what you see.” “Won’t it be sufficient…?”

Now, the problem we have: We have two kinds of people who are ignorant of economics: those who are honestly ignorant, and those who are inherently dishonest. And the latter outnumber the former. In other words, “How can I cheat?” This is Economics 101 today: “How Can I Cheat?” Not “How Can I Earn?” Well, we abolished earning: We shut down our factories, we stopped building our infrastructure, we shut down our farmers. We allowed Al Gore, who was reputed to have been eaten by a polar bear—which likes fat. Polar bears like fat. They see a guy walking up there, with fat, “This guy, what a fat head! He must be fat all over. We’ll eat him!”

But, these kinds of ideas of sophistry, the same kind of sophistry in an extreme form, which sank ancient Greece under Pericles, the same kind that we’re repeating today. This is our problem. And as a result of the popularity of sophistry: “All my friends tell me….”

The Human Mind Is Not Digital

Well, let me take one more little side issue, because it’s so crucial to understand this problem, which most people don’t. Let’s take computer games. Killer computer games. What’s the difference between a man and a monkey? And how does this apply to understanding computer games? Because computer games are designed on the basis of two things: First of all, they were designed to kill; they were designed to train a mass of the population, and retrain soldiers, as killers, who would shoot more often and at more people. And it worked! In order to train soldiers to kill more profusely, they invented games; they went to the computer industry to produce games, which are point-and-shoot training games. Then, late in the 1990s, when the subsidies to the computer industry were collapsing, under the previous arrangement, then, the computer industry, which otherwise would have gotten suddenly poor, went into mass production of the computer killer-game industry.

They produced this killer wave: We are on the verge of having suicide-prone mass-killers, just like you talk about in the Middle East, inside the United States. These mass-killers will be from our own youth, and they will be from youth who have been indoctrinated in playing computer games. And those who produce these games, are fully aware of this. And our study of case-histories shows that the secret of these games is, the children don’t play the games. The games play the children.

One of my experiences earlier in life—oh, a quarter-century ago, or more; back in the 1960s, actually—was, I had been an old chess player. And I got away from it, because I got bored with the game, couldn’t stand it any more. I went to all the games. I didn’t win tournaments, but I was a blindfold chess player, simultaneous blindfold chess, all these kinds of tricks which I was good at, when I was younger and quicker. But then I said, “I gotta change.” So, I looked at the game of “Go.” And after a little too much playing the game of Go, I realized what it does to your mind—and I said, “never again!”

Now, the game of Go does not have a bad intention as such. It has a negative effect on the mind. But it does not have a bad intention. Killer games have a bad intention. And the intention which is built into the design of the games, is that you think that the person is playing the game on the Internet? Uh-uh! The game is playing him! And the firm that runs the game, and monitors it, is playing him! Or her.

So the point is, first of all, it has all the defects of Go, with all the necessary moral failures added. Kill! Kill! Game ends! Game ends! Game ends! Die!

When does game end? When the law enforcement agency or other official comes on the scene—and you stop killing the people, and kill yourself. That’s exactly what happened in Virginia, exactly that.

And all the time this is happening, the companies that run the games on the Internet, are monitoring the games. They’re coaching the games. Controlling and manipulating the minds of the players!

You have also a similar effect on MySpace, another mass-brainwashing operation produced by the digital industry. Facebook, another one, and so on and so forth. We’re seeing the development of mass terrorism potential, inside the United States, based on these games! And the effect in the United States will be comparable to what we have in Southwest Asia, as so-called terrorism. But coming from inside the United States, generated, and monitored, and controlled by computer companies that manage these games, while the poor suckers who are playing them are being managed.

We allow it.

The other aspect of this thing, which is what I refer to in this case, is that the human mind is not digital. There is no digital mathematics that can represent the processes of the human mind, as distinct from those of a monkey. The human mind is creative by virtue of functions we associate only with analog devices. Creativity, as expressed by a human mind, corresponds generally to an analog function. We’ve done some work on that.

In the case of economics—coming back to that: in economy today, what is taught as economics, is Cartesian kinematics, a projection, a statistical projection. There are virtually no competent economists engaged in long-term forecasting—none! But many incompetent ones! And every one is wrong. Because it does not correspond to human behavior.

Human behavior is creative. Look at yourself. Now stand next to a picture of a gorilla or a chimpanzee. Or a baboon if you prefer. And say, “what’s the difference between me, and a baboon, and a gorilla, or a chimpanzee? What do I do? I can think.”

“Well, prove that.”

Well, what is the population-density of baboons, chimpanzees, and gorillas. How many millions per square kilometer can you have, of chimpanzees, baboons, and gorillas? Now, what is the rate of growth of world population, per capita and per square kilometer of the human species? What’s the difference? The difference is discoveries, which take two forms: of scientific principle, physical scientific principles, and Classical artistic principles. And these things enable human beings to increase the potential of the human species, as no other living creature can do.

This power comes as a result of what we call creativity, which does not exist in any digital system. But the only way you can represent it, mathematically, is by analog systems. That does not cause it, but it’s capable of reflecting that.

So the point today, is people are living in a digital society, whose deleterious effects are enhanced, increased, by the role of these games, and similar kinds of entertainment. Look at the attention span of a young kid, 16-to-25 years of age! What is the typical attention span? What is it, 30 seconds? 15 seconds? Strictly as a result of MySpace. Take a MySpace addict, a typical MySpace addict: What is the length of their concentration span, measurable? What is the length of concentration span of a game player, on a killer game? These guys are babblers! They have no concentration span, whatsoever.

So we’re destroying a section of a population, by destroying their minds, destroying their mental capacities, and turning them potentially into mass killers. And this is what our policy is.

It Is Time for a Global Peace of Westphalia

And this is the way we teach economics. Gore is typical of this. Gore is an exemplification of evil. Why? Because he denies the existence of creativity. For example, the case of India. He says he’s for reducing carbon emissions—it doesn’t mean a damned thing. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! But! What does he mean? He’s against the development of the fission process, for thorium-fission cycle. The thorium-fission cycle, using a material called thorium, which is rather abundant in India, used in proper devices, can be placed locally to provide power in locations, to improve water management and do a lot of other things. So the people of India require a very large increase of this process, set into motion. And to do this, you have to have a nuclear reaction which charges the thorium—which is not military problem at all—which thus gives the local village and so forth the ability to have a nuclear plant which provides what it can’t get otherwise: freshwater.

Take for example, the Deccan in southern India: In southern India, the supplies of water have depended for long time, on drawing down fossil water! Now fossil water in southern India, in the Deccan region, means water which was put down there before the beginning of the Ice Age, 2 million years ago, the first ice age we know of. So, fossil water, which has been buried there for 2 million years, is now the recommended resource, for providing water for a village in southern India. It’s crazy. With a nuclear plant, on the coast—and India has a very small area, relative to the coastline—near the coast, you can produce from seawater, you can produce freshwater in quantities, and economically, for these people. And improve the conditions of life.

So the United States government, in its infinite lack of wisdom, has tried to ban the thorium cycle from use in India, along with the British. So, the point is that humanity progresses through technological progress, and so forth.

What we represent as the American System is this: Europe has a very special kind of quality. Remember that about 19-20,000 years ago, we had great ice ages, all over the northern hemisphere, not every part of it, but a lot of it. Ice was thick, habitation was poor. The most advanced cultures were maritime cultures, people sailing in flotillas of boats, using astronavigation, to go large distances, up to 1,000 miles or so, or 2,000 miles, across oceans, or down oceans, from one place of residence to another place of residence, as the seasons change. And we know of these things, because through the study of astronomy, we recognize that some of these astronomical cycles which are built into the calendars are of that character: that only a society which was based on astronavigation, a maritime culture, could possibly have generated these features of those calendars: 25,000 years, 50,000 years, 200,000 years. Long-range calendars for cycles.

So in this process, the Mediterranean area and its adjoining areas became developed, as a maritime culture. This happened over thousands of years, but what we know of most of it, started about 700 B.C. with the emergence of an alliance among Egypt—that is, the case of Egypt, the Etruscans, and the Ionians, against Tyre. And this process led to the development of European civilization, which had a promising start, but kept being destroyed by empires, or the development of European empires, such as those of the Romans, or the Byzantine Empire, or the empire of the Venetians of the medieval period; and the attempted modern empire.

The issue has always been, in European civilization, in particular, that the tendency has been by oligarchs, to degrade the lower 80% or more of the family-income brackets of a population to virtual animals, by denying them access to the process of developing creativity and new discoveries. This was the issue posed by Aeschylus in his great Prometheus Trilogy and other writings. We take the distinction of mankind from the animal, which is the creative powers of the human mind, which don’t exist in any animal, which the strength of humanity lies in there, and we suppress that in large parts of populations, with various kinds of oppression—colonial and other oppression.

So we take a society which had the most advanced power in the planet, which was European society as it developed in recovery from the dark age of the middle of the 14th Century; we corrupt it by things like the Grand Inquisitor, and the emergence of Liberalism, and the creation of empires based on Liberalism. And we subject the entire planet to this cruelty. And we call that, “the way things are.” We call that, “common sense.”

The time has come when the requirements of maintaining humanity, the technological requirements and scientific requirements are such, that humanity can no longer exist under what has been the practice of much of European civilization over the period to date. We must take what we resolved in Europe in 1648, the Peace of Westphalia, and commit ourselves to the entirety of the human race, to all of it: It has the rights which are granted to Europeans among themselves by the Peace of Westphalia.

So, that, to bring things to this close, as I presume the questions’ll be pouring in shortly, is what I have to say today.

Turkish Intelligence: Al-Qaeda a U.S. Covert Operation

Turkish Intelligence: Al-Qaeda a U.S. Covert Operation

Turkish intelligence specialists agree that there is no such organization as al-Qaeda. Rather, Al-Qaeda is the name of a 3421731.gifsecret service operation.

The concept ‘fighting terror’ is the background of the ‘low-intensity-warfare’ conducted in the mono-polar world order. The subject of this strategy of tension is named as ‘al-Qaeda.

It is interesting that Turkish intelligence would admit that the neocon “war against terrorism” is an entirely artificial construct.

Another Day In The Empire”

Consider the following, published in Zaman, the fifth largest newspaper in Turkey:

“Amid the smoke from the fortuitous fire i.e., the capture of Louai Sakra, said to be the al-CIA-duh regional boss in Turkey emerged the possibility that al-Qaeda may not be, strictly speaking, an organization but an element of an intelligence agency operation.

Turkish intelligence specialists agree that there is no such organization as al-Qaeda. Rather, Al-Qaeda is the name of a secret service operation.

The concept ‘fighting terror’ is the background of the ‘low-intensity-warfare’ conducted in the mono-polar world order. The subject of this strategy of tension is named as ‘al-Qaeda.

’” Note the use of the phrase “strategy of tension,” an obvious reference to Gladio, the state-sponsored terrorist operation in Italy (basically a series of fascist false flag operations, or “low intensity warfare,” blamed on leftists).

It is interesting that Turkish intelligence would admit that the neocon “war against terrorism” is an entirely artificial construct.

Moreover, according to Turkish intelligence, “Sakra has been sought by the secret services since 2000.

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) interrogated him twice before. Following the interrogation CIA offered him employment. He also received a large sum of money by CIA. However the CIA eventually lost contact with him.”

It is curious how alleged key people in the al-CIA-duh network end up working for the CIA and other intelligence agencies.

For instance, Abdurahman Khadr, who (according to ABC News Online) “lived side-by-side with Osama bin Laden,” was a “double agent, sent to spy on Al Qaeda fighters at Guantanamo Bay and in Bosnia.”

Ali Mohamed, a former U.S. Army sergeant who trained Osama bin Laden’s bodyguards and helped plan the 1998 bombing of the U.S.

Embassy in Kenya, worked for the FBI (Mohamed, obviously with the grace of the feds, brought Ayman al-Zawahiri to San Francisco on a covert fund-raising mission), according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Hamid Reza Zakeri claimed (during the trial of Abdelghani Mzoudi, a Moroccan accused of helping the nine eleven hijackers) that “Iran’s secret service had contacts with Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network ahead of the September 11 attacks,” according to Reuters.

It just so happens Zakeri claims the CIA owes him $1.2 for services rendered as a double agent. Mullah Krekar, the leader of Ansar al-Islam, told al-Hayat newspaper in 2003 he had “a meeting with a CIA representative and someone from the American army in the town of Sulaymaniya (Iraqi Kurdistan) at the end of 2000.

They asked us to collaborate with them,” an offer Krekar said he refused.

Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, aka Abu Omar, “a dangerous terrorist who once plotted to kill the Egyptian foreign minister,” according to the Chicago Tribune, was such a valued CIA asset it was deemed necessary to kidnap him off the streets of Milan after he had second thoughts about his work.

And then there was Muhammad Naeem Noor Khanm, the al-Qaeda “computer engineer” who “became part of a sting operation organized by the CIA,” according to the Washington Post.Of course, all of this CIA funny business is coincidental.

Remember, the CIA is ineffectual, even if it did create Islamic terrorism—the agency actually boasts about this, says the Afghan Mujahideen (aka “al-Qaeda”) was its most successful operation to date—and it was “intelligence failures” that caused nine eleven.

par Neil Clark, The Australian28.12.07

Broke Britain: millions face struggle to stay afloat as financial crisis hits home

By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent
Published: 02 January 2008

Debt experts are predicting a record number of personal insolvencies this year as excessive Christmas shopping, rising mortgage payments and soaring food and fuel costs force thousands of people over the financial edge and into bankruptcy.

More than nine million individuals in Britain are now believed to be struggling to pay credit card bills and mortgages, with the average owed by problem debtors hitting £30,000.

In alarming figures to be released tomorrow, the accountancy firm Grant Thornton predicts the total number of personal insolvencies will jump to at least 120,000 this year, almost triple the equivalent figure in 2004, when just under 47,000 people went bankrupt.

Insolvency experts say people have been readily loading large amounts of debt on to credit cards and personal loans, despite the economic slowdown.

High-street shops and online retailers reported higher-than-forecast takings in December, while the new year sales have also been busier than expected. One commentator described the Christmas shopping spree as one last hurrah before a tougher 12 months ahead.

Although the economy is still vibrant and employment plentiful, the supply of cheap and easy credit that has revved the economy for years is being turned off as a result of the sub-prime lending crisis in the United States. Fewer mortgages are being granted to people in Britain with poor credit records. Credit card limits are being lowered and personal loans are becoming harder to obtain.

According to a poll conducted by Uswitch.com in November, 38 per cent of new applicants for credit cards and 19 per cent of applicants for new personal loans were rejected, while 6 per cent have had their credit card limit cut. With food and fuel prices also set to rise in the new year, levels of disposable income are likely to drop, deepening the difficulties of those attempting to repay debts.

Those already in debt will find themselves at the mercy of collection agencies more determined than ever to recoup money for clients. According to one industry journal, the coming crisis means that “debt collection agencies will need to adopt more sophisticated methods in order to deliver value back to their clients”.

The latest figures indicate that 23 per cent of people – 9.5 million adults – were finding their current level of debt “unmanageable”. Although the Bank of England cut the base rate of interest last month, an estimated 1.4 million people will still have to pay more for their home loans when their fixed-rate deals come to an end this year, costing an extra £150 to £250 a month.

Tomorrow, Grant Thornton will forecast that 10,000 individuals will hit the financial wall each month in 2008, with 28,000 individuals sliding into insolvency in the first quarter. As many as one third of bankruptcies in the first three months of the year will be caused by “excessive Christmas spending”.

Mike Gerrard, the head of Grant Thornton’s personal insolvency practice, said: “Sadly, many individuals spend up on credit at Christmas and pay no heed to the financial warning bells. Come January, they find themselves in a situation where previous financial woes are compounded by the bills arriving from the festive season and in these situations insolvency becomes the only way out.”

Mike Naylor, a personal finance expert at uSwitch.com, remarked: “People have enjoyed easy access to cheap credit for quite some time, but for some, the party really could be over.” He said those with a poor credit record would experience a particularly tough time.

In a survey last month, the Bank of England found that more than one fifth of those whose mortgage deals had come to an end last year struggled to meet higher payments.

Experts predict a rise in Individual Voluntary Agreements (IVAs), a less stringent form of bankruptcy, because banks are once again accepting them after quibbling with their terms last year. Bankruptcies are also expected to be more readily accepted by individuals because they have become so commonplace and so their stigma has fallen.

Malcolm Hurlston, the chairman of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS), predicted there would be a small rise in IVAs and a “quite substantial” rise in bankruptcies.

When individuals are declared bankrupt their debts are written off, but they are often credit- blacklisted for years and may have difficulty finding a job.

Debt agencies said they had been busy during December, which is usually a quiet time.

On average, people approaching the CCCS have debts of £30,000. About 45 per cent of that is from personal loans, 40 per cent from credit cards and 5 per cent from store cards and other lending. The organisation estimates that 7 per cent of the adult population is experiencing serious debt problems, which would represent about 3.3 million people in the UK.

“Nearly all of them have lost control,” said Mr Hurlston. “Some of them can sort their finances out but some of them need some kind of solution, which might be making voluntary payments; it could be IVAs or it might be bankruptcy.”

Steady increases in the cost of living are expected to tighten the screw. In only 12 months, Grant Thornton said the cost of filling up a vehicle with unleaded petrol had increased by 16 per cent, which meant the public was having to find an extra £155 a year to fill up the car.

Mr Gerrard said: “Coupled with rapidly increasing gas and electricity prices, which are forecast to jump by more than 10 per cent early this year, it’s easy to see how those already struggling to pay off credit, particularly those servicing mortgages, are caving in to the pressure.” He warned: “I believe personal insolvency numbers will move forward at a much faster pace than anticipated.”

Howard Archer, the chief UK economist at Global Insight, suggested that in general people would have to be more frugal this year. “Household purchasing power is likely to be dented by higher energy and food prices over the coming months, while many home owners face having to re-fix their mortgages at significantly higher rates.

“Furthermore, increasing concerns about the economic outlook are likely to further encourage consumers to tighten their belts,” he said.

The British Bankers’ Association urged people to check their finances carefully and to get in touch with lenders as soon as they got into difficulty.

How to keep on top of your cash

Five money-managing tips from the British Bankers’ Association

Keep an eye on your spending – check your bank statements;

Don’t ignore the bills – where you can, arrange to pay monthly so you can spread the cost;

Be careful with the credit card – if you’re tempted to overdo it, leave the card at home;

Start to save, or save a bit more – there are some good offers as banks compete for your cash;

If you think you are heading for difficult financial times, go and talk to your bank sooner rather than later.

Armed forces ’superbug’ menaces UK

Experts fear an infection caught by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan will invade civilian hospitals

Peter Beaumont, foreign affairs editor
Sunday December 16, 2007
The Observer

The UK, the United States and Canada are facing growing fears over a drug-resistant ’superbug’ being brought back by wounded soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq that threatens to contaminate civilian hospitals.
The intensified concern comes amid sharply rising infection rates in the US and fresh worries in Canada that the bug could be imported into its civilian healthcare system. Military health officials who have studied the bacterium in Afghanistan believe the infection of wounded British soldiers in field hospitals there is probably inevitable.

The US military originally thought the bug came from contaminated Iraqi soil, but troops in Afghanistan have also been infected. Canada’s public health service last week revealed it had ordered the screening of all its wounded soldiers being repatriated from Afghanistan.
The bacterium, Acinetobacter baumannii, first emerged as a ‘mystery infection’ afflicting US service personnel returning from the war in Iraq in 2003-04. It was described by a scientific journal specialising in hospital epidemiology as the ‘most important emerging hospital-acquired pathogen worldwide’. The journal added that it was potentially a ‘major threat to public health’ due to its ability to mutate rapidly and develop a resistance to all known drugs.

Although different types of acinetobacter have been known for decades in hospitals, the new ‘T’ strain identified in the injured troops is particularly virulent and has been observed to appear in US servicemen within two hours of being admitted to a field hospital. It affects the spinal fluid, bones and lungs, causing pneumonia, respiratory failure and other complications. Equally worrying is its resilience. Extremely difficult to eliminate from medical facilities once established, the bug can survive for up to 176 days in a human host. US officials concede that, once established in the medical evacuation chain, the germ is almost impossible to stamp out.

Although the Ministry of Defence tried to play down fears of the infection when the first suspected British cases were reported last year in the Lancet, its increasingly rampant progress through America’s military hospital system has been causing intense alarm elsewhere.

Canadian military doctors investigated the infection in Canadian troops at an intensive care unit in Kandahar and published a report in the journal BMC Infectious Diseases earlier this year.

The officers warned that their findings about the infection risk were ‘equally applicable to US and British military field hospitals as well’, adding that ‘the environmental and logistical problems that faced [the medical units involved] are common across field hospitals in Afghanistan and Iraq’. They added that ‘unrestricted use of antibiotics’ at the field hospitals to compensate for poor environmental conditions had contributed to the emergence of the new superstrain.

In addition to a new screening regime, Canadian infectious disease officials will meet early next year to develop a national strategy to deal with the risk of the new strain spreading to civilian hospitals.

One of the report’s authors, Major Homer Tien, told The Observer from Kandahar yesterday that further outbreaks appeared inevitable. ‘No one really knows how it is being transmitted. What is certain is that it is a big concern,’ he said. ‘A lot of the work I was doing was trying to pinpoint the source of the infection. We still can’t say what the source was. If we can’t prevent it, the next question is how we can keep the hospitals back home in the UK and Canada from being infected.’

Concern is all the higher because, as in the UK, injured Canadian troops are treated in the civilian healthcare system, while most Americans are treated in an extensive network of military hospitals.

Infection rates have risen steeply in the US. In 2001 and 2002, around 2 per cent of admissions were infected at a specialist army burns unit in Texas. By 2003 the rate had risen to 6 per cent, then 12 per cent by 2005, a rate consistent with other facilities. So far, 27 servicemen have died from the infection.

In stark contrast to Canada and the US, the attitude towards the threat in the UK has been sanguine and low-key.

An MoD spokesmen last week insisted there had not been a case since November 2004 and it employed ‘robust and stringent infection control procedures which fully meet NHS requirements adequate to deal with the problem’.

British ’success’ under siege in Afghanistan

By: Syed Saleem Shahzad

on: 15.12.2007

KARACHI - British troops have once again recaptured the less than a few square kilometers of the district headquarters of Musa Qala town in Helmand province from the Taliban, but, as before, it could turn out to be a pyrrhic victory.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Kabul have heralded this week’s operations as a “most strategic and significant success” in the province, where 80% of Afghanistan’s poppy cultivation is located.

British troops have seized Musa Qala before, but then have become virtual prisoners in their barracks. Indeed, last year they were only able to vacate the town after striking a truce with the Taliban, who controlled all the surrounding areas of the inhospitable terrain.

The Taliban put up token resistance this week, according to a Taliban commander in Kandahar, Moulvi Abdul Jalil, who told Asia Times Online on telephone that the organisation now aims to concentrate its efforts on Kandahar province and has already captured two districts near Kandahar city.

With regard to Musa Qala, Mullah Noormal (a jihadi alias), a lieutenant of Mullah Abdul Bari, said in a satellite phone interview with Asia Times Online, “They British fired continuous artillery shells for two days on the civilian population and as a result the people evacuated the area. The Taliban did not receive any casualties as we did not actually fight. Civilians were the one victims. We were under the command of Mullah Abdul Bari and retreated when the troops rolled into town.

“Now that the troops are in Musa Qala, we have taken over positions nearby, namely the towns of Raigi and Shaban. The British troops are now once again trapped, like they were in 2006. We will now retaliate at a time of our choice. They don’t have even offices to stay in in Musa Qala as we destroyed the Olaswali administrative office before leaving the town,” said Noormal.

“Now they are in Musa Qala’s headquarters and we are sitting in all the villages around Musa Qala. They don’t have a way forward or backwards.”

Noormal’s comments could be taken with a pinch of salt, but they are not entirely untrue. This correspondent spent considerable time traveling in all the districts of Helmand province under the control of the Taliban (and also those under British control. He saw the area extensively through the eyes of the Taliban late last year and through the eyes of NATO forces early this year.

Beyond Greskh district, on the way to Musa Qala, there is no road network. Vehicles have to travel on wide deserted plains, following the tire marks of other vehicles. The average speed is less than 10 kilometers an hour. The approach to Musa Qala is marked by agriculture fields and tress. The town itself comprises some shops, a hospital, a few mosques and inns and the district headquarters.

NATO’s obsession with Helmand
It is clear that NATO is obsessed with Helmand province in order to complete the renovation of Kajaki Dam, a hydroelectric project that will ensure uninterrupted power supply to Kandahar and Helmand provinces. This is strategically significant for a backward region where roads do not exist and the people still rely on natural rain water reservoirs.

Helmand shares a lawless border with Pakistan through which smugglers carry goods to Iran via Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Kandahar province lies to its east. The bumper poppy crops in Helmand that make their way through Pakistan and Iran to Europe earn the Taliban huge dividends to fuel their war against NATO. And the smuggling routes are reliable supply lines for arms and human resources to flow into Afghanistan.

From the province’s southern district of Gramsir, bordering Pakistan, to the northern end of Baghran, large areas are partially or completely under Taliban control. Partial control means that district headquarters are under the control of the Kabul administration and all surrounding villages are under the control of the Taliban.

British authorities in Helmand confirm that poppy cultivation takes place across the province. Drug-processing labs are mostly in Taliban-controlled Sangin district, north of Gramsir. The trafficking routes pass through the government-controlled provincial capital of Lashkargah, between those two districts, with the connivance of Afghan security before going on through Taliban areas to Pakistan. Using exactly the same route via Pakistan, arms are smuggled into Helmand then spread all over Afghanistan.

In this context, NATO is once again desperate to cut off these vital arteries.

The scope of success
US-led forces entered Helmand province without much resistance during the invasion of 2001 because it was a collective tribal decision to say goodbye to the Taliban and welcome the new power. It was believed the incoming forces would be able to provide basic necessities such as water, electricity, food and ultimately prosperity.

This did not happen, while efforts were made to curtail poppy cultivation, a vital cash crop. By 2005, the tribes - once again unanimously - decided that it was time to boot out the foreign forces (rather than welcome the Taliban again) so they could grow their poppy and lead their lives according to their own traditions and tribal codes without the intervention of the non-local Afghan army and police.

They did allow the Taliban to operate, and foreign forces were driven away from many areas. However, apart from Baghran district, which is completely ruled by the Taliban, and Lashkargah, which is run by the Afghan government, all districts are run by local tribal councils, which allow the Taliban to stay.

From December 2006 until now, British Commonwealth Office staff and the British task force stationed in Helmand have tried their level best to make Helmand “civilized”. They have opened schools, rebuilt mosques, dug wells, launched programs for capacity building and many other development projects in coordination with tribal elders. But this has not delivered the expected results, as the population remains obsessed to drive out the foreigners.

It should be stressed that this does not necessarily mean that people are fully committed to the Taliban and their ways. Except for Baghran, most places are manned by pro-Taliban commanders who don’t represent the Taliban hardcore - they are just local tribal warriors who have joined the Taliban rank and file for the time being.

The greatest challenge facing NATO is to retain control of the recaptured region of Musa Qala and win desperately needed indigenous support. This is possible through two means: complete administrative liberty for the people, which means tribal rule, and the financial freedom for them to grow poppy and trade (read smuggle). Once NATO agrees to this, the people will be won over and the Taliban will be sidelined.

It’s a tough choice. Meanwhile, the Taliban have captured two districts near Kandahar to build up pressure in that province to distract NATO from Helmand.

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf ran for President with the campaign slogan — “All the men have failed Liberia; let’s try a woman.” She is known as Africa’s “Iron Woman,” who reduced corruption, increased government revenue, restored relations with international lenders, and launched a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

In the midst of President Johnson’s fame and “first time” recognition, it must be recognized that she is no better for Liberia than the former dictator President Charles Taylor of Liberia who currently is before the International Criminal Court on 11 counts that mount to crimes against humanity and corruption. Women can rule or hold a leadership position equal to men or better, nevertheless, the struggle for us is ideological in nature and particular to the leader.

African heads of states are forging toward continental unity and in the tradition of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Ture, Tinia Sila, Tedora Gomes, Amil Cabral (Abdel Djassi) and other revolutionary Pan-Africanists. Non-alignment is essential for the independence of Africa. However, Johnson is attempting to align herself and Liberia with U.S. imperialism and ever since the 1800s and the “Back To Africa” movement the U.S. and Liberia have remained aligned in one form or the other. There is danger in this partnership. This partnership moves along the lines of slave-master relationship or exploiter and the exploited.

In his book Neo-colonialism the Last Stage of Imperialism, Nkrumah spelled out the problems with imperialist intervention through finance capital and military occupation. That is why it is a stab in the back of all Pan-Africanists and to the Pan-African movement to witness the first woman elected president in Africa - Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf - become the first African woman neo-colonialist. She follows the path of the former Liberian president Charles Taylor and former US pupper Samuel Doe. Taylor himself is on trial in The Hague for 11 counts of various indictments.

The United States established a base in Liberia during World War II, coupled with Firestone gaining land concessions to exploit the labor and raw materials that was used for U.S. military hardware and for other motor vehicle needs. Firestone remains in Liberia amidst a battle against the corporation for deplorable labor treatment especially the exploitation of children slave workers. The Sirleaf government is inept and allows it to continue. This vicious cycle of puppet prerogative, imperialist exploitation, and mass denigration must be challenged and stopped by any means necessary.

If Sirleaf loved the masses of Africa well enough, and Liberians in particular, then she would be an advocate for one military true enough, but an African High Command akin to Nkrumah’s vision in the Handbook of Revolutionary Warfare. In addition she would call for strengthening the African Union and it’s military so that Africa can secure it’s own land and people.

The revolutionary leader Amil Cabral clearly pointed out the dilemma of neo-colonialists and simply put it as their lack of a revolutionary consciousness, echoing President Fidel Castro. In a speech he delivered in Cuba at the first Tricontinental Conference of the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America in 1966, Cabral spoke about theory as a weapon. He said:
”The neo-colonial situation, which demands the elimination of the native pseudo-bourgeoisie so that national liberation can be attained, also offers the petty bourgeoisie the chance of playing a role of major and even decisive importance in the struggle for the elimination of foreign domination. But in this case, by virtue of the progress made in the social structure, the function of leading the struggle is shared (to a greater or lesser extent) with the more educated sectors of the working classes and even with some elements of the national pseudo-bourgeoisie who are inspired by patriotic sentiments. The role of the sector of the petty bourgeoisie which participates in leading the struggle is all the more important since it is a fact that in the neo-colonial situation it is the most suitable sector to assume these functions, both because of the economic and cultural limitations of the working masses, and because of the complexes and limitations of an ideological nature which characterize the sector of the national pseudo-bourgeoisie which supports the struggle. In this case it is important to note that the role with which it is entrusted demands from this sector of the petty bourgeoisie a greater revolutionary consciousness, and the capacity for faithfully interpreting the aspirations of the masses in each phase of the struggle and for identifying themselves more and more with the masses.

But however high the degree of revolutionary consciousness of the sector of the petty bourgeoisie called on to fulfill this historical function, it cannot free itself from one objective of reality: the petty bourgeoisie, as a service class (that is to say that a class not directly involved in the process of production) does not possess the economic base to guarantee the taking over of power. In fact history has shown that whatever the role — sometimes important — played by individuals coming from the petty bourgeoisie in the process of a revolution, this class has never possessed political control. And it never could possess it, since political control (the state) is based on the economic capacity of the ruling class, and in the conditions of colonial and neo-colonial society this capacity is retained by two entities: imperialist capital and the native working classes.”
Cabral’s words 41-years ago are compatible with neo-colonialism in the 21st century AD. “Ryan Henry, principal Defense Department under secretary for policy told reporters the purpose of AFRICOM is not waging war, but “to work in concert with our African partners for a more stable environment in which political and economic growth can take place.” In the same breath he skillfully bites his tongue and slightly dances around the true reason for wanting to establish a base in Africa and it is in concert with the rich deposits of oil and natural gas in Africa. Henry propagated the idea that economic development for the West African region is an aspect of the high command and that in other words means Liberia and West Africa are ripe for the pickings. Liberia represents a history ally that the U.S. relied upon even through the 14-year war and the U.S. keep it’s eyes on the prize-oil.

The U.S. consumes nearly 20 million barrels of oil with last year 22 percent of that oil imported from Africa. That was an increase of 7 percent in 2004. The National Intelligence Council projects that Africa will account for 25 percent by 2015 and staggering percentage amount from a continent that is in abject poverty and the masses will suffer, from not electricity to study, wash dishes, bath, and cook or provide their homes with security of a well lit porch light. Several other countries are on the horizon for the oil exploitation and they are Ghana (currently talking about a U.S. military base), Angola and Equatorial Guinea. ExxonMobil and Chevron, France’s Total and British Petroleum and Royal Dutch Shell will invest billions of dollars in Africa in the coming years. The cash cow Nigeria became the third largest exporter of oil to the U.S. in 2007 out stripping Saudi Arabia.

According to a report from Monrovia, Liberia, date July 6, on July 4th at a reception “marking the 231st Independence Anniversary of the United States”, President Sirleaf said “Liberia, the U.S. historic ally, has stood resolutely with the United States, through good times and bad, and is offering its territory as it has done in the past, for the establishment of AFRICOM headquarters.”

Chief Executive Bush indicated that historical and strategic reasons make Liberia an ideal location for this important American initiative that will undoubtedly have a most beneficial effect on the West African sub-region, as well as the entire continent.

President Sirleaf welcomed the new United States policy towards Africa’s security and development as reflected in the proposed establishment of a new Africa Command (AFRICOM).

If this puppet regime and Sirleaf believe that the U.S. is a friend of Africa then they are sadly mistaken and the helm is essentially the same as the former dictator Charles Taylor and puppet Samuel Doe before him who died naked on the floor and begging, once the African masses caught up with him. President Sirleaf would do well at washing her hands to U.S. imperialism and reject any attempt to further the cause of neo- colonialism in Africa. The resources of Liberia make it an attractive country to predators.

‘Suicide’ concern over drug to stop smoking

JANE KIRBY

REPORTS of suicidal feelings among patients taking a stop-smoking drug are being “monitored closely”, the medicines watchdog said yesterday.

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is looking at evidence after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched an evaluation of the drug Champix, called Chantix in the US.

The drug, which is also known as varenicline, is a prescription-only medicine launched in the UK last December.

Between 15,000 and 20,000 people in the UK have taken Champix since its launch.

The MHRA said it had received 839 reports of suspected adverse drug reactions in relation to Champix as of 26 September.

Of these, 46 related to depression associated with the use of Champix, mostly in patients with a previous psychiatric history.

There have been another 16 reports of suicidal thoughts but no reports of actual suicides.

A statement said: “The MHRA is monitoring closely the issue of suicidality in patients taking Champix.”

Other side-effects reported to the agency are well-known for the drug, the MHRA said.

These include 52 reports of abnormal dreams, 49 of dizziness, 37 of fatigue, 82 of headaches, 34 of insomnia, 183 of nausea, 21 of drowsiness and 67 of vomiting.

The MHRA said patients and doctors should be aware of the possible effects of Champix on driving.

How 10 million Britons are falling into a black hole of debt

By SEAN POULTER -

Cut! The Bank of England is under increasing pressure to cut base rates to prevent triggering a disastrous slowdown in the economy

More than ten million adults are teetering on the brink of the financial abyss because they cannot cope with rising mortgage payments and other debts. A study paints an alarming picture of a large section of the population that is gripped by money troubles.

Almost one in four - 23 per cent - fear their current borrowing is already unmanageable or is about to become so.

Meanwhile 12 per cent - 5.4million - have missed payments on debts and bills in the past six months.

Around ten per cent had a direct debit, cheque or payment bounced by their bank over the same period.

About three per cent even fear they are about to lose their home.

Five interest rate rises since August last year have added more than £100 a month to repayments on the majority of mortgages, while personal loans, overdrafts and credit cards are also more expensive.

However, the pain has been compounded by the impact of the global credit crunch.

Banks are chasing more borrowers through the courts to pay up, while they are turning down up to half of applications for credit cards and loans.

The research revealing the debt paralysis was commissioned by financial website uSwitch.com.

It is backed up by other studies published today by Mintel and Moneynet.co.uk.

Debt-ridden Britons owe some £1.3trillion to banks and finance companies, and uSwitch found the average person now sees over half of his or her monthly take-home pay eaten up by mortgage repayments and other debts.

Ann Robinson, uSwitch’s director of consumer policy, said: “This is crunch time for consumers and it couldn’t come at a worse time of year.

“In the run-up to Christmas, traditionally one of the biggest periods of consumer spending, people are concerned about their jobs, their homes and their ongoing ability to manage their debts and bills.

“The days of easy credit and the ‘buy now, pay later’ culture may be numbered, but they will leave a painful reminder for those left struggling with debt.

“The credit crunch will claim casualties - it will be enough to tip some over-indebted households over the edge.”

Retail and finance analysts Mintel said that as many as one in three mortgage-holders - more than five million - face real financial hardship due to being relabelled as sub-prime, or high-risk, debtors.

Mintel estimates that nine per cent of the UK’s 16.5million mortgage-holders will now be considered sub-prime by lenders as a result of falling behind on debt repayments.

But it said a further 24 per cent could also be considered a high risk because of their personal circumstances. They may be self-employed, they may have fallen behind on bills or moved frequently.

As a result, they will find it more difficult and expensive when they come to remortgage or move home.

People in this category generally have to pay much larger mortgage application fees and higher interest rates than the rest of the population.

Research by finance website Moneynet found interest rates on credit cards available to the high-risk group can be “shatteringly high” - as much as 59.9 per cent - while they may have to pay a mortgage rate of 9.99 per cent.

Earlier this week, accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers predicted a sharp rise in the number of people going bust in the New Year.

Separately, the Council of Mortgage Lenders predicted 30,000 home repossessions this year and another 45,000 in 2008.

The figures will heap pressure on the Bank of England to cut the base rate in order to head off a personal crisis for thousands that could trigger a disastrous slowdown for the wider economy.

Credit crunch may leave me bankrupt

Recruitment consultant Roger Mills, 38, fears a downturn in the market could make him bankrupt despite a previously good credit history.

After setting up his own business 18 months ago and buying a house six months later, he has credit card debts of £30,000 and an overdraft of £4,000 just as the credit crunch is starting to bite.

Mr Mills, who lives in Surbiton, Surrey, with wife Caroline, has since had applications for loans and credit cards turned down.

He said: “I had to put some money into the business - there are rising costs and I have had to max out a couple of my credit cards.

“At my previous job, I wasn’t used to worrying too much about money, but now when I get asked for dinner by a friend I sometimes have to think of an excuse.

“I haven’t missed any repayments so far, though I have been late a couple of times because I had to organise where the money was coming from.

“I feel my debt is manageable, but if the climate changes, the credit crunch could lead to bankruptcy and homelessness for people like me.”

Clear Evidence British special forces are recruiting, training terrorists to heighten ethnic tensions.

Elite SAS wing with bloody past operates with immunity, provides advanced explosives

Some attacks being blamed on Iranians.

An article in the Sunday Telegraph this weekend pointed towards evidence that an secretive and elite unit of the British army is actively engaged in recruiting and training Iraqi insurgents and terrorists as double agents.
This confirms what many have speculated for a long time, that Britain and the US are deeply involved in bombings and attacks inside Iraq which are subsequently attributed either to Sunni insurgents or shadowy terrorist cells such as “Al Qaeda in Iraq”.

The Telegraph article states:

Deep inside the heart of the “Green Zone”, the heavily fortified administrative compound in Baghdad, lies one of the most carefully guarded secrets of the war in Iraq. It is a cell from a small and anonymous British Army unit that goes by the deliberately meaningless name of the Joint Support Group (JSG), and it has proved to be one of the Coalition’s most effective and deadly weapons in the fight against terror.
Its members - servicemen and women of all ranks recruited from all three of the Armed Forces - are trained to turn hardened terrorists into coalition spies using methods developed on the mean streets of Ulster during the Troubles, when the Army managed to infiltrate the IRA at almost every level. Since war broke out in Iraq in 2003, they have been responsible for running dozens of Iraqi double agents.
A look into the history of the secretive JSG or Force Research Unit (FRU), the cover name it operated under in Northern Ireland, reveals the extent to which the British government supports and engages in acts of terrorism in order to further its agenda in occupied territories. Iraq, as it turns out, is unsurprisingly no exception.
The FRU is the same ultra secret cell of the SAS whose criminal activities in Northern Ireland were under investigation by former Scotland Yard commissioner Sir John Stevens for more than a decade, during which time it emerged that the unit was involved in the murder of civilians in Northern Ireland.
According to Detectives, ‘Military intelligence was colluding with terrorists to help them kill so-called “legitimate targets” such as active republicans…many of the victims of these government backed hit squads were innocent civilians.’
“Beginning in the 1980s the highly secretive FRU was sent into Northern Ireland to recruit and train double agents to work inside the paramilitary groups,” writes Michael S. Rose.
“The FRU combated IRA terrorism by the use of paid informers, blackmail, ambushes, and other methods not approved by the Geneva Convention. In the worst case, British officers decided that in cases when it would be difficult to bring suspected IRA terrorists to justice by legitimate means, the FRU would enlist outlawed guerilla groups that possessed both the desire and the means to murder the IRA men. According to Stevens Three, the FRU assisted Protestant terrorists in carrying out what were, in effect, proxy assassinations of Catholics. In order to forge such alliances, the British officers had to overlook the fact that the interests of the Protestant death squads were not those of the United Kingdom and its government.”
The FRU was further exposed by former member turned whistleblower Kevin Fulton.
Fulton worked for the FRU for much of his career as he was infiltrating the IRA. In his role as a British FRU agent inside the IRA, he was told to ‘do anything’ to win the confidence of the terrorist group. Fulton Told the Sunday Herald:
“I mixed explosive and I helped develop new types of bombs. I moved weapons. If you ask me, ‘Did I kill anyone?’ then I will say ‘no’. But if you ask me if the materials I handled killed anyone, then I will have to say that some of the things I helped develop did kill.
I reiterate, my handlers knew everything I did. I was never told not to do something that was discussed. How can you pretend to be a terrorist and not act like one? You can’t. You’ve got to do what they do. The people I was with were hard-hitters. They did a lot of murders. If I couldn’t be any good to them, then I was no use to the army either. I had to do what the man standing next to me did.
I broke the law seven days a week and my handlers knew that. They knew that I was making bombs and giving them to other members of the IRA and they did nothing about it. If everything I touched turned to shit then I would have been dead. The idea was that the only way to beat the enemy was to penetrate the enemy and be the enemy. At the time I’d no problem with this way of thinking.”
Fulton revealed that his handlers told him that his operations were ’sanctioned right at the top… this goes the whole way to the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister knows what you are doing.’
Every major IRA bombing in England and Northern Ireland has had the fingerprints of the British government and the FRU all over it.
The August 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people, was known ahead of time by the security services and yet the bomb team wasn’t intercepted. The reason? One of the members of the bomb squad was working for army intelligence and MI5. The bombing was allowed to go ahead.
Kevin Fulton claims that he phoned a warning to his RUC handlers 48 hours before the Omagh bombing that the Real IRA was planning an attack and gave details of one of the bombing team and the man’s car registration.
Documents, lodged as part of a court action being taken against the British government by a disgruntled military intelligence agent, also reveled that an FRU major was the officer who was the handler of the British army’s most infamous agent inside the IRA — a man codenamed Stakeknife.
Stakeknife is one of Belfast’s leading Provisionals. His military handlers allowed him to carry out large numbers of terrorist murders in order to protect his cover within the IRA.
The London Observer further revealed some of the methods employed by the FRU in Northern Ireland, including the “human bomb” technique, which involved “forcing civilians to drive vehicles laden with explosives into army checkpoints”.
This throws a great deal of light on at least one reported incident in Iraq just over a year ago where British SAS agents, dressed in Arab garb and head dress, were caught attempting to stage a terror attack.
The soldiers drove a car towards a group of Iraq police and began firing. According to the Basra governor Mohammed al-Waili, one policeman was shot dead and another was injured.
Early reports cited as originating from BBC World Service radio stated that the car used contained explosives.
In light of this it is pertinent to ask the question, are civilians in Iraq being killed as “legitimate targets”?
We have previously covered the Iraq “order out of chaos” or “strategy of tension” theories in great detail, citing Pentagon documents, esteemed researchers and the testimony of Congressmen and Ambassadors.
All agree that it is entirely plausible to suggest that the US and British governments are operating an underlying strategy which serves to keep the country mired in turmoil to justify the continued presence of occupational forces.
In many cases the evidence suggests that the armed forces role is to prod terrorist cells into action, thus exposing them to “quick-response” attacks. The FRU revelations of recruiting, training and equippingterrorists in Iraq is thus telling.
An even more startling question comes to mind, are everyday ground troops being killed in attacks that their higher ups either have extensive knowledge of or have actually coordinated themselves?
Recently there have been reports of US soldiers being killed by insurgents wearing American military uniforms. Iraqi officials said the gunmen disguised their intent with uniforms, American flak jackets, guns and a convoy of at least seven GMC sport utility vehicles, which are usually used by American officials in Iraq.
It is possible that insurgents may have been able to lay their hands on a couple of uniforms, but where did they get a whole convey of vehicles from?
Further interesting light is thrown on this topic when one considers that the explosives being used in many roadside bombs and car bomb attacks in Iraq have been proven to be developed using advance technology from photographic flash units, which were employed by the IRA some 15 years ago after Irish terrorists were given advice by British agents.
Kevin Fulton has again provided vital information on this, revealing how MI5 helped to buy bomb parts and technology in the US which were subsequently used by the FRU in Northern Ireland and have now found their way into the hands of Iraqi resistance fighters.
“In late 1993 and early 1994, I went to America with officers from MI5, the FRU and RUC special branch. They had already sourced the transmitters and receivers in New York following liaison with their counterparts in the FBI,” Fulton told the Sunday Tribune in June, 2002. Fulton’s trip was confirmed by the FBI, according to Matthew Teague, writing for the Atlantic. The Independent on Sunday “has also spoken to a republican who was a senior IRA member in the early 1990s. He confirmed that Mr. Fulton had introduced the IRA to the new technology and that the IRA shared this with ‘like-minded organizations abroad.’”
There can be no more clearer evidence that our special forces are recruiting, training and arming the Iraqi insurgents.
What’s more, in an attempt to shift the blame away from British and US special forces, the US government has attempted to pin the blame for the use of this advance infra-red bomb technology on Iran:
“According to U.S. military figures, 198 American and British soldiers have been killed, and more than 600 wounded by advanced explosive devices manufactured in Iran and smuggled in through the southern marshes and along the Tigris River. Attempts to disrupt these networks, combined with the decision to send a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf as a warning to Iran, significantly raises the stakes, according to former Assistant Secretary of State Martin Indyk.”
So all in all here we have clear evidence of Britain and the US recruiting terrorists in Iraq, training them, providing explosives and advanced detonating technology and then blaming the attacks on Iran, thus raising the possibilities of widening the war across the Iranian border.
The FRU is, as previously stated, a wing of the SAS. A cursory look into some of the covert activities of the SAS, along with the equivalent Delta forces in the US, involving terrorist groups again reveals the fact that the British and US establishments are not engaged in fighting a war on terror, they are perpetuating the terror as part of their overall agenda.
British and American special forces notoriously paved the way for an influx of radical Islamic mujahideen fighters and arms into the Balkans in the early nineties and trained them in order to counter Serbian forces during the Bosnian conflict.
The SAS, under a joint strategic directive of MI6 and the US Defence Intelligence Agency, also later notoriously trained Kosovo Liberation Army terrorists in the Balkans in the mid to late nineties. Several investigations corroborated this.
The KLA was known to be heavy infiltrated at this time by “Al Qaeda” or mujahideen fighters associated with Osama Bin Laden who had declared a “global war on the US”. It was even alleged that Bin Laden had directly financed the group, yet the US and Britain still went ahead and covertly trained the KLA.
The KLA was then used to increase ethnic tensions and further destabilize the region, just as is happening now in Iraq. Attacks by the KLA were used to justify Western intervention in the Balkans.
There is also extensive evidence to suggest that British and US special forces have helped create, support and train Albanian terror cells from which a great deal of the KLA finances are derived.
The activities of the FRU in Iraq need to be investigated immediately. We have a branch of the military that is operating above the law and outside of the Geneva convention within a theatre of war. Moreover this unit has an extremely dirty past that involves carrying out terrorist atrocities and blaming them on persons or groups it wishes to see removed.
The driving agenda in Iraq is to set down permanent bases and dominate the middle east from there. Thus the war is allowed to rage on to keep our forces there.
The FRU’s past activities also clearly reveal that the British government is not engaged in a real war on terror, they use the vehicle of terrorism to steer the greater agenda of conquer and control where ever they see fit. The Delta forces of the US work in direct collusion with this wing of the SAS towards the same goal.

« Ils veulent désintégrer l’Etat pakistanais, » a averti, hier, Lyndon LaRouche.

The big lies about the helicopters crashed in Iraq yesterday
By: Various on: 21.11.2007

BAGHDAD: A U.S. military helicopter crashed Tuesday southeast of Baghdad, killing two people and wounding 12, the U.S. military said.Initial reports indicated the crash was not due to hostile fire, the military said. The statement also did not specify the type of helicopter and did not specify the nationalities of the victims.

The crash occurred near Salman Pak on the outskirts of the Iraqi capital, a military statement said.

“An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the incident,” the statement said. “However, initial reports indicate the crash was not the result of enemy fire.”

British military helicopter crashes in IraqDefence ministry confirms two British soldiers killed, 12 injured in helicopter crash in Iraq.LONDON- A helicopter which crashed southeast of Baghdad Tuesday killing two soldiers and wounding 12 was British, the defence ministry in London said.

“It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the loss of an RAF Puma helicopter near Baghdad in Iraq last night. Two service personnel were killed; their next of kin have been informed,” it said Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry added that two other personnel were seriously injured, but are now recovering in hospital.

“It is too early to speculate on the cause of the crash; an RAF (Royal Air Force) Board of Inquiry has already been convened and is en route to Iraq to conduct its investigations.”

In Baghdad, a spokesman for the US-led coalition said it was not yet known why the helicopter crashed but it was “not brought down by enemy fire.”

The coalition forces in Iraq have lost several helicopters since the March 2003 invasion, especially the US military.

The US-led forces make constant use of a huge fleet of helicopters and are dependent on them to avoid roadside bombs laid by insurgents and militia fighters.

SAS soldiers killed as chopper crashes on raid to target Iraq bombers
21.11.07
Two SAS soldiers have been killed in Iraq during a mission to target suspected suicide bombers. They died after their RAF Puma helicopter crashed near Baghdad.

Two other SAS soldiers were seriously injured in the crash; the RAF crew is thought to have survived.

The deaths mean that more British servicemen have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan than the number lost in the 1982 Falklands conflict.

Fatal: A Puma helicopter, like this one, has crashed in Iraq, killing two soldiers

One hundred and seventy three service personnel have died in Iraq since Operation Telic to topple Saddam Hussein began in 2003.

Eighty-four British troops or Ministry of Defence civilians have died in Afghanistan, bringing the combined number of deaths to 257, two more than died liberating the Falklands following the Argentine invasion.

Early reports suggested that last night’s helicopter crash was not due to enemy fire.

It happened as the Puma was flying the four members of 22 SAS - famed for its Who Dares Wins motto - out of their base 50 miles from Baghdad. They were acting independently from Iraqi police because of fears that leaks might compromise the mission. Five members of the Hereford-based regiment have been killed in Iraq this year.

An RAF board of inquiry has been set up to investigate the incident and next of kin have been informed. The injured personnel are recovering in hospital. An MoD spokesman said: “It is too early to speculate on the cause of the crash. An RAF board of inquiry has already been convened and is en route to Iraq to conduct its investigations.”Crash: An RAF Puma helicopter crashed on MoD land in the UK in August

Gordon Brown paid tribute to the men and to Captain John McDermid, who was killed by a roadside bomb as he led a patrol of Afghan troops in Helmand last week.

The Prime Minister said: “We owe them and others who have lost their lives a deep debt of gratitude.”

The oldest helicopter operated by the RAF, the Puma - which usually has a two- or three-man crew - has been involved in a number of fatal crashes in recent years. The RAF has 33 of the aircraft, which fly at up to 147 knots and can transport 16 troops or loads of two tonnes.

In April, Defence Secretary Des Browne reassured British forces that the transport helicopter had a “very good” safety record after two collided north of Baghdad, killing two men.

Today, the Liberal Democrat MP for Hereford, Paul Keetch, suggested that the crash may have been due to the troops being transported in an older model helicopter. He demanded to know when new Chinook helicopters, which he stressed had been ordered by the last government, would be made available to special forces.

However, Mr Brown said: “Despite the tragedy, nobody should jump to any conclusions.”

News of the fatalities in Iraq came as a think-tank warned that the Taliban is back in control of “vast swathes” of Afghanistan and is set to get a foothold back in the capital Kabul.

Despite the massive international financial and military effort, insurgents have established a permanent presence in more than half of the troubled country. The “crisis” is so bad that it is a question of “when not if” the Taliban will reappear in Kabul, and there is a “serious” danger they could regain control of the state.

The damning assessment comes in a report by the Senlis Council, one of the few research groups with a base in Afghanistan. The report recommends that the size of the Nato force be doubled from 80,000 “as soon as is logistically possibleî.

Al-Anbar Province.

Al-Qa’im.

Collaborator puppet police units carry out mass arrests in al-Qa’im area Wednesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 11:30am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that collaborationist tribal contingents of the “al-Anbar Awakening Council” puppet police carried out raids near al-Qa’im in far western Iraq on the Syrian border beginning Wednesday morning.

Yaqen reported eyewitnesses as saying that the collaborationist “Awakening” puppet police arrested dozens of local residents in the al-‘Ubaydi area, 40km south of al-Qa’im

Rawah.

Resistance mortars blast US base in Rawah Wednesday morning.

In a dispatch posted at 11:30am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that Iraqi Resistance forces fired three mortar rounds into the US base in Rawah, 315km northwest of Baghdad, Wednesday morning.

Yaqen reported eyewitnesses as saying that numerous explosions were heard going off inside the American-occupied base after three mortar shells slammed into the facility. Thick clouds of smoke billowed from inside the American compound, witnesses reported, adding that US helicopters flew in over the base as well.

Al-Fallujah.

US occupation forces wall off city of al-Fallujah from outside world at a cost of US$3 billion.

In a dispatch posted at 3:05pm Baghdad time Wednesday afternoon, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US military has begun building a concrete wall around the city of al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad, at the cost of US$3 billion.

Yaqen reported a source in the local puppet “al-Fallujah Governing Council” as saying that the US military had contracted with a local construction firm run by a businessman from al-Fallujah to build a concrete wall three meters high surrounding the city on all sides so that the occupation forces can seal it off from the outside world.

The source, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the local contractor has close relations with the American occupation authorities and was therefore able to secure a price tag of $3 billion for the project. Construction of the wall began on the northern side of al-Fallujah a week ago, the source added.

According to the contract, construction of the wall is expected to take six months and is to cut al-Fallujah off from its suburbs and from the rest of the world, giving the US occupation forces control over every one who enters and leaves the city by forcing them all to pass through tightly guarded crossing points.

Since the heavy fighting that raged in al-Fallujah in November 2004, the US Marines have imposed a system of identity badges on local residents and compelled them to present documentation proving that they are residents of al-Fallujah in order to be allowed to pass in or out of the city.

The US has already walled off numerous cities and, in some cases, districts of cities, in occupied Iraq, turning them into open air prisons in which all movement is closely monitored and all services and economic life can be turned on or shut down at will. The Sunni district of al-A‘zamiyah in Baghdad and the city of al-Hadithah, 280km northwest of Baghdad were walled off from the outside world several months ago

Resistance men ambush collaborator “al-Anbar Awakening Council” puppet police convoy Tuesday night, sparking half-hour firefight.

In a dispatch posted at 10:12am Baghdad time Wednesday morning, the Yaqen News Agency reported that fighting erupted between Iraqi Resistance men and collaborator tribal contingents of the so-called “al-Anbar Awakening Council” puppet police in areas to the west of al-Fallujah, 60km west of Baghdad, on Tuesday evening.

Yaqen reported eyewitnesses as saying that a force of the collaborator “Awakening” police including more than 10 vehicles came under attack when a Resistance bomb exploded by their convoy on the highway leading to ar-Ramadi at a place about 80km west of Baghdad.

After the explosion Resistance men who had been hidden in the area began pouring fire on the convoy. The collaborator “Awakening” puppet police responded with wild gunfire in various directions showing their panic. The witnesses said that the gunfire went on for more than half an hour but no more details were available because the engagement took place at night and visibility was limited.

Baghdad.

Sectarian murder spree continues: five more bodies found dumped around Baghdad.

In a dispatch posted at 10:45pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi puppet police recovered the bodies of five more victims of sectarian murder that had been dumped around Baghdad on Wednesday.

Yaqen reported a source in the puppet police as saying that three of the bodies were found in the al-Karakh district and two in ar-Rusafah.

US-appointed “Iraqi President” Jalal Talibani says “Israeli” President Peres “welcome in Iraqi Kurdistan.”

In a dispatch posted at 8:21pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the US-installed “President of Iraq,” Kurdish separatist Jalal Talibani, welcomed statements by “Israeli” President Shimon Peres in effect endorsing “independence” for the Kurds of Iraq.

Yaqen reported Talibani as describing Peres’ statements as “realistic” and saying that the Zionist leader was “an individual welcome in Iraqi Kurdistan.” Talibani said, “unfortunately it is not possible for the Kurds in Iraq to declare independence because neighboring countries are not agreeable to that.” Talibani said that therefore the best thing is to remain in current status of a federation under which the Kurds can rule themselves in the north and participate in governing the other parts of Iraq.

Shimon Peres, the Prime Minister of “Israel” since 15 July 2007, said “the best way to solve the internal problems of Iraq is through federalism. For that to take place, it would be best for Iraq to be partitioned in the three independent federal regions. But the establishment of an independent Kurdish state or independent federal region for the Kurds in the north of Iraq is a matter for the Iraqis themselves to decide.”

Yaqen News Agency reported that in an interview with the Turkish language CNN Turk television news network, the “Israeli” leader said, “the establishment of an independent Kurdish state in Iraq is a matter for the Iraqis themselves to decide. But I can say that the implementation of a federal system is the best way to solve the problems besetting Iraq today.”

Efforts to split Iraq along religious and ethnic lines – which often are masked under language about forming an Iraqi “federation” – are consistent with plans that US and Zionist politicians have long been cultivating.

Shortly after the tripartite aggression against Egypt in 1956 a plan traced to the “Israeli” General Staff that provided for the sectarian and ethnic division of the Arab world, including Iraq was published by Indian journalist R. K. Karanjia under the title “The Dagger of Israel” (Bombay: Blitz Publications, November 1957, p. 35). The plan provided for the creation of numerous mini-states in Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt in addition to specifically envisioning a Kurdish state in northern Iraq. The plan also called for creating “non-Arab corridors” to cut across the Arab regions – a likely allusion to a pragmatic Iranian-Zionist alliance with respect to predominantly Shi‘i southern Iraq.

The idea of “the dissolution of Iraq into a Shi‘ite state, a Sunni state and the separation of the Kurdish part” was voiced by veteran Zionist military correspondent Ze’ev Schiff in Ha’aretz on 2 June 1982 and was a part of the divide-and-rule strategy laid out by Zionist writer Oded Yinon in his “Strategy for Israel in the 1980s,” published in Kivunim (Directions), A Journal for Judaism and Zionism, published by the World Zionist Organization in occupied Jerusalem in February 1982. (It was translated by the late anti-Zionist writer and activist Israel Shahak and is widely available.)

The idea of splitting the Shi‘ah in Iraq from the rest of the country was a cornerstone of the neo-Conservative strategy laid out in “A Clean Break” a paper drawn up by American Zionist government officials Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, David Wurmser, and Paul Wolfowitz in 1996 for the then Zionist Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Then in 2000 the neo-Conservative Project for a New American Century wrote Rebuilding America’s Defenses on the basis of the “Clean Break.”

The American version of the strategy for a partition of Iraq appeared in the article “The Three-State Solution” published in The New York Times on 25 November 2003 by Leslie Gelb (President Emeritus of the US Council on Foreign Relations). The same idea was reiterated, this time with “bi-partisan support” in the article by Gelb and US Democratic Senator Joseph Biden in “Unity through Autonomy in Iraq,” in The New York Times on 1 May 2006.

Most recently, on 26 September 2007, the US Senate passed a resolution calling for the partition of Iraq into three “federated” states.

Iraqi Resistance group announces destruction of three US military vehicles in two Iraqi Provinces as part of offensive against American occupation.

In a dispatch posted at 8:09pm Baghdad time Wednesday night, the Yaqen News Agency reported that the Iraqi Resistance Organization the 1920 Revolution Brigades announced that its fighters had destroyed three US vehicles as part of their offensive against the American occupiers code named as-Sakhrah al-‘Atiyah (“the Impervious Stone”).Yaqen reported the 1920 Brigade communiqué as saying that its fighters completely destroyed one American Humvee in a bomb attack in Salah ad-Din Province. The US crew in the vehicle was killed in the course of the operation codenamed al-Matraqah al-Hadidiyah (Iron Hammer). In Kirkuk, 250km north of Baghdad, fighters for the 1920 Revolution Brigades detonated another bomb destroying a US vehicle in the al-Qadisiyah neighborhood. .Eyewitnesses told Yaqen that the Iraqi Resistance land mine exploded by the side of the road as the joint patrol drove past on its way towards the center of the city. The blast destroyed one Humvee and disabled two more vehicles in the patrol, the witnesses said. They said that US forces closed the road and sealed off the area. They also called in a medical unit to evacuate the casualties, the precise number and nature of which was unknown.Powerful explosion targets US patrol near “Green Zone” in Baghdad Wednesday morning.

Mafkarat al-Islam reported an official spokesman as saying that a rocket was fired from the Karmat ‘Ali area at the base. British occupation troops responded by firing six artillery shells into the Karmat ‘Ali area.

H5N1 in Saudi Arabia

H5N1 in Saudi Arabia
Recombinomics Commentary
November 14, 2007

Saudi Arabia’s Agriculture Ministry announced yesterday that it had culled 50,000 birds after a deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected at a poultry farm in Al-Kharj, 150 kms south of Riyadh

tests were carried out after 1,500 birds died in the farm, which had a total of 50,000 birds.

It also advised the public not to hunt migratory birds

The above comments on a new H5N1 outbreak in Saudi Arabia comes of the heals of an outbreak in Suffolk, England.  Saudi Arabia previously reported H5N1 in ostriches in March, but this outbreak and culling are significantly larger.

In Europe, the recent outbreaks, beginning over the summer in Germany and the Czech Republic, involve a sub-clade of the Qinghai strain that is closely related to the Tvva/Mongolia isolates linked to a massive wild bird outbreak in the spring/summer of 2006.

Although there were no reports of this sub-clade for a year, it generated headlines over the summer in Germany when hundreds of wild birds tested positive for a closely related H5N1.  The detection in the summer, when wild bird migration was minimal, strongly suggested that the strain had become endemic in the wild bird population in Europe.

The recent outbreak in England in free range turkeys suggests that is version of H5N1 is circulating over a wide region.

Details of the H5N1 in Saudi Arabia, including sequence information would be useful.

Study shows ‘demonisation’ of Muslims

islamophobie.gifStudy shows ‘demonisation’ of Muslims

A “torrent” of negative stories has been revealed by a study of the portrayal of Muslims and Islam in the media, according to a report published yesterday.

Research into one week’s news coverage showed that 91% of articles in national newspapers about Muslims were negative. The London mayor, Ken Livingstone, who commissioned the study, said the findings were a “damning indictment” of the media and urged editors and programme makers to review the way they portray Muslims.

“The overall picture presented by the media is that Islam is profoundly different from and a threat to the west,” he said. “There is a scale of imbalance which no fair-minded person would think is right.” Only 4% of the 352 articles studied were positive, he said.

Livingstone said the findings showed a “hostile and scaremongering attitude” towards Islam and likened the coverage to the way the left was attacked by national newspapers in the early 1980s. “The charge is that there are virtually no positive or balanced images of Islam being portrayed,” he said. “I think there is a demonisation of Islam going on which damages community relations and creates alarm among Muslims.”

Among examples in the study was a report which claimed that Christmas was being banned in one area because it offended Muslims, which researchers said was “inaccurate and alarmist”.

The report said that Muslims in Britain were sometimes depicted as a threat to traditional British values, and the coverage weakened government attempts to reduce extremism.

The report is an amalgam of research projects individually prepared by members of a panel.

Some research, examining published newspaper articles and reporting the experiences of Muslim journalists, involved Hugh Muir, of the Guardian

UK terror detention limit is longest of any democracy

New research piles pressure on ministers over plans to extend 28-day limit

Alan Travis, home affairs editor
Monday November 12, 2007
The Guardian

Britain’s existing 28-day limit on holding terror suspects without charge is already far longer than that for any comparable democracy, according to a study to be published tomorrow.

The survey, by the human rights organisation Liberty, was carried out by lawyers and academics in 15 countries. It shows that the four-week maximum in Britain outstrips limits in countries that have also suffered al-Qaida inspired terrorist attacks in recent years, including the United States, Spain and Turkey.

Although police in these countries also face increasingly complex terror plots with growing international dimensions, their maximum periods for pre-charge detention remain as short as 48 hours in the US, five days in Spain and seven and a half days in Turkey.

The findings are released as MPs await the publication of a new counter-terrorism bill that will propose extending detention without charge beyond 28 days.

Police chiefs have argued that complex investigations, including trawling computers and telephones for evidence of terrorist plots, mean they need the option of holding suspects for longer.

But critics have expressed concern that police have failed to bring forward compelling evidence to show the need for an extension.

The home secretary, Jacqui Smith, is determined to avoid a repeat of the humiliating Commons defeat suffered by Tony Blair two years ago when he proposed a 90-day limit and saw 49 Labour MPs rebel.

Ministers have indicated they would favour a maximum of up to 56 days, but no government position has been made clear. There is evidence that Gordon Brown has not yet formed any strong personal opinion and he is said to remain “genuinely open-minded” on his preferred option.

Liberty’s experts around the world found that in comparable democracies the closest equivalent to a charge for those who have been detained in connection with terrorist activities must happen within days and not the months or even the years claimed by those who want to double the British limit to eight weeks.

The absence of a final decision has been reflected in a slippage of the publication date of the counter-terror bill. It was expected to appear by the end of this month but has now been pencilled in for December-January, with Smith only saying publicly that she hopes it will happen by Christmas.

The home secretary has claimed that carrying out international comparisons of pre-charge detention limits are so complex that they are on a level with doing a PhD thesis, while the Metropolitan police commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, has claimed that in countries such as France and Germany judicial oversight allows people to be detained for years.

Shami Chakrabarti, the director of Liberty, said any extension of pre-charge detention would put Britain even further out of line with comparable democracies around the world: “The new prime minister is neither Tony nor Ian Blair. I have every hope that this new, damning evidence, alongside proportionate alternatives to lengthy pre-charge detention, will persuade him to think again.”

She said the Liberty study “explodes self-serving assertions about extended detention in inquisitorial Europe and other western democracies. It makes embarrassing reading for all of us in the land that gave Magna Carta to the world.”

The human rights organisation acknowledged that comparisons with other common law systems such as in Canada, New Zealand and Australia were more straightforward than those with inquisitorial civil law systems such as France and Germany, but said it had asked legal experts in each country to identify the closest equivalent to pre-charge detention.

“We found that the closest equivalent to a charge must happen within a matter of days, not months or years as Sir Ian Blair and others have suggested,” the Liberty study concludes.

It also warns that any extension of pre-charge detention in Britain could have broader implications around the world and give the green light to other governments such as Robert Mugabe’s in Zimbabwe to pass more draconian anti-terror laws: “Some states, and some individuals seeking to radicalise Muslim youths also might use the disparity to undermine the UK’s claim to civility and moral authority.”

‘I feared I’d end up dead in the woods like Dr Kelly,’ says biological warfare expert who criticised Britain and U.S.

Fighting back: Jill Dekker was given special protection by the Belgian government after a series of ’sinister’ incidents

By GLEN OWEN and OLIVER WADESON -

11th November 2007

An EU expert on biological warfare has told how she fears ending up ‘dead in the woods’ like scientist Dr David Kelly after an alleged campaign of intimidation by members of MI6 and the CIA.

Jill Dekker, a bio-defence expert based in Brussels, has reported a string of sinister incidents – including the parking of a hearse outside her house – after making a speech critical of British and American policy in the Middle East.  Her claims are included in a new book by Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker which argues that Dr Kelly was murdered to silence his criticism of the grounds for going to war in Iraq.

American-born Dr Dekker has been billed at security conferences as the director of the ‘public health preparedness programme’ at the European Homeland Security Association (EHSA), a security think tank.

She was placed under the protection of the Belgian government after reporting a series of sinister incidents earlier this year.

The Belgians confirm that they mounted a three-month protection operation earlier this year for Dr Dekker, who has advised the European Commission on bio-terrorism issues, but refuse to be drawn on the extent to which her fears were wellfounded or why the protection was eventually lifted.

The EHSA bears many of the hallmarks of a ‘front’ organisation for espionage activities, although Dr Dekker refuses to say anything about it except that it answers to the French government.

Established in 2004, it holds workshops and conferences, and claims partnerships with a number of security-based thinktanks around the world.

It appears to exist only in cyberspace, with its staff, including its president, French career diplomat Richard Narich, only contactable by email. Dr Dekker is not listed on the EHSA website and the organisation was yesterday not responding to any calls.

Dr Dekker says the ‘intimidation’ against her started in March, as she was flying to Florida to give a speech on Syria’s weapons programme to an intelligence summit. She says she was subjected to a ‘heavy-handed’ interrogation by a man she suspects of being a British intelligence operative.

She believes the speech made her powerful enemies because she argued that billions of dollars spent by the US government to develop a smallpox vaccine has been wasted because scientists – including British experts – have used a different viral strain to the one she believes is being developed in Damascus.

If this is true, it means governments would have no way of protecting the public against the use of the virus by terrorists or rogue states.

She also believes that Iraq did have a biological weapons capacity which was all shipped to Syria before the outbreak of war.

She argues this was known, but was concealed from the public because the real purpose of the war was not to target weapons of mass destruction but to topple Saddam Hussein and gain a strategic foothold in the region.

When she returned to her home in Belgium after the speech she said she was subjected to an overt campaign of surveillance and harassment, including being continuously followed on foot and having cars parked outside her house with the headlights on.

On one occasion, she says she found a hearse parked outside her house with the drivers ’staring straight ahead.’ When she approached, it sped off and she pursued it, taking photographs as evidence.

After being told that Mr Baker was writing a book about the circumstances surrounding Dr Kelly’s death, she sent him an email on March 23 designed, she says, to highlight the risk she felt she was under.

Dr David Kelly, the UK’s leading weapons inspector in Iraq, was found dead in 2003

‘I’ve informed all my diplomatic friends that not only am I not suicidal, I am looking forward to my children growing up and . . . also my great career,’ she wrote. ‘Much like other people who suddenly were found dead in woods.’

A week later, she wrote: ‘The US State Department and their surrogates… continue to intimidate me and my family – every day they are outside my home, they tail me 24/7 – I believe they could try to kill me so I don’t reveal any more of my research on Syrian biological weapons.’

In a third email in April, she wrote: ‘I refuse to be intimidated by anyone who uses the tactics they used – so unprofessional even people inside can’t believe how they have acted here – it’s like Johnny English [the 2003 spoof spy film starring Rowan Atkinson as an incompetent British agent], really so amateurish. Our services just aren’t what they used to be.’

It is difficult to establish whether there is any truth to Dr Dekker’s claims of harassment, as she refuses to disclose the precise location of her home 90 minutes drive from Brussels for ’security reasons’.

She says the Belgian government extended its protection to her three months ago by making her a Belgian citizen, and is investigating her claims through its public prosecutor’s office. The Government confirms that she is now a Belgian national.

Dr Dekker has given a detailed account to The Mail on Sunday of the alleged campaign of intimidation, which she believes was led by American and British intelligence.

She tells how she was subjected to an ‘amateurish’ interrogation by the British man on the plane to Florida.

‘The plane was absolutely packed, and there was just one seat next to me that was empty. The plane was held up to let the final passenger on board,’ she said.

‘He then started asking me questions regarding my occupation, quite sensitive things about Nato and the like, to the point that I turned and said to him, ‘OK, go down the list’.

‘He then backed off but continued throughout the flight to be intrusive. He had this whole cover story about why he lived in Holland, right down to financial documents he showed me.

He asked me right out of the blue about Isotopes – now there’s a word you don’t hear everyday on a transatlantic flight.’

When she returned to Belgium after the conference she says was followed relentlessly on foot and by car, and had vehicles parked outside her house – often with darkened windows and their headlights fullon in broad daylight.

Of her encounter with the mystery ‘hearse’, she said: ‘No one in our neighbourhood had died and the agents sitting in the front wouldn’t make any eye contact, just stared straight ahead.

‘I was pretty ticked off so I decided to pull my car out and follow them. They took off so fast – they must have been driving at around 100 kph through the countryside. Then they followed me the next day with this hearse with Belgian plates all the way home.’

She says that after ‘making a few calls’, she was placed under the protection of the local police. The ‘campaign’ then stopped, having lasted just over a month.

‘It was unbelievable to me that I had to ask another government for protection against my own,’ she said. She kept a daily ‘harassment’ diary, which she has handed to the Belgian authorities.

Dr Dekker, who says she met David Kelly before the Iraq war at Wilton Park, a countryside conference centre used by the Foreign Office, agrees with Mr Baker’s conclusion that he was murdered.

Dr Kelly, the UK’s leading weapons inspector in Iraq, was found dead in woods close to his Oxfordshire home in 2003, after apparently committing suicide.

He had been highly critical of the intelligence used to justify the invasion of Iraq, and in particular the infamous assertion that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction which he could deploy at 45 minutes notice.

Speculation about potential culprits who might have had a motive to silence him has ranged from ’special ops’ units of the intelligence services to expatriate Iraqi opponents of Saddam.

Mr Baker writes in his book The Strange Death of David Kelly, which is published tomorrow: ‘I have met Dr Dekker on two occasions and had a number of long exchanges with her. She does not strike me as the sort either who would frighten easily, or who would ginger up her story for effect.

‘Rather, she is a somewhat hardnosed, intelligent and knowledgeable woman who has succeeded well in a profession where men predominate. I therefore took it seriously when she emailed me.’

Dr Dekker emerged from the shadows of what she says has been a 20-year career as a scientist in 2005, when internet records show that she was a ‘bio-defence consultant’ for the Brussels-based thinktank New Defence Agenda.

The organisation, which bills itself as ‘platform for discussing Nato and EU defence and security issues’, names former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten and former Nato secretary general Lord Robertson among its patrons.

But critics have called it the arms industry’s ‘weapon of mass disinformation’ because of the partnerships it has established with companies such as BAe Systems, Lockheed Martin and Thales.

The International Intelligence Summit, which she addressed in Florida, described itself as ‘a nonpartisan, non-profit, neutral forum that uses private charitable funds to bring together intelligence agencies of the free world and the emerging democracies … the purpose of The Summit is to provide an opportunity for the international intelligence community to listen to and learn from each other, and to share ideas in the common war against terrorism.’

The publicity for the conference said: ‘The list of presenters will include many of the top leaders of the intelligence, espionage, counterterrorism and counter-intelligence agencies from around the free world. The Summit is intended to be the most prestigious world conference on international studies, intelligence policy, terrorism, and homeland security.’

The Summit flagged up Dr Dekker by saying she ‘regularly consults with Ministries of Public Health, Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Ministries of Defence on issues related to Mid-East state bio-warfare programmes’.

It added that she ‘has advised the European Commission on bio-terterrorism and stockpiling for Category A bio-warfare agent countermeasures; resulting in (COM (2004) 701 Communication from the Commission to the Council and the European Parliament Preparedness and consequence management in the fight against terrorism’.

Asked if she knew anyone who could back up her claims of intimidation, she referred us to one of her friends, who spent 20 years as a CIA officer and now works as a consultant.

He said: “She told me what happened, and I believe it. What she described is known as heavy harassing surveillance, with the purpose of intimidating.”

Dave Thomas, the local police inspector who was entrusted with Dr Dekker’s protection, said he had done so on the orders of the Belgian ministry of the interior.

Speaking in accented English almost as good as his distinctly un- Belgian name would suggest, he said: “It is true that we were told to look after her. They said she was an important person who felt under threat.”

But he did not go into details into what action his force had taken.

A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said the order had come from the country’s Crisis Centre, Belgium’s emergency planning department.

He said: “Jill Dekker specialises in bioterrorism. She reported to us that she felt she was being threatened by foreign intelligence services, and we received an instruction from the Crisis Centre on March 21 that she should be protected. The protection was withdrawn on July 7.”

Last night, Mr Baker said he believed Dr Dekker could have made enemies by exposing a fallacy at the heart of military action against Iraq.

“If the war was really about WMD, then to be consistent we should also invade Syria,” he said.

“Otherwise, it suggests that it was more about giving Saddam a bloody nose.”

Qui a tué David Kelly ?

Posted in Conspiration, Histoire, Impérialisme, Irak, Médias manipulateurs, Royaume-uni by eldib on November 12th, 2007

_39648679_davidkelly.jpgQui a tué David Kelly ?

By Way of Deception

bytheway.jpgBy Way of Deception

Merryll Lynch 8,4 Citigroup 6,5 Union Banque Suisse 4,4 Deutsche Bank 3,1 Bear Stearns 2,3 Crédit Suisse 2,6 Bank of America 2,0 Countrywide Fin 1,6 Dresdner Bank 1,0 Morgan Stanley 0,9 JP Morgan Chase 0,3
