The Charlotte Eagles came back from a “thunder break” with a little offensive noise of their own Tuesday night in a 5-2 victory against Galactics of Clearwater, Fla, in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup at Charlotte Christian.

The Eagles scored three unanswered goals after play resumed from a 1-hour, 15-minute lightning delay to break open a tie game and advance to the second round. They'll play the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division on June 24 in Charleston.

Dustin Swinehart and Robert Ssejjemba scored two goals each, and each contributed a goal to the second-half rally. Jorge Herrera also scored for the Eagles, and Joseph Kabwe had two big second-half assists.

Galactics, a state championship amateur team in Florida, led 2-1 early in the second half on a goal by Edwin Diaz, but Swinehart tied the game on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, shortly before play was stopped by lightning.

The Eagles return to USL Division 2 play at 8p.m. Saturday against the Western Massachusetts Pioneers at Charlotte Christian.
