20.7.2006 Adept 2.1.1
I have released version 2.1.1 few days back, it is now in debian unstable. The preferred way to download is through normal apt-get in debian. Please ignore the kde-apps.org download link, it leads to an older, buggier version (2.1) which you won’t be able to compile anyway unless you get the build dependencies right.
On other front, work on 2.2 release is ongoing, it is getting back into an usable shape. Most of the work so far has been under the hood, although the usability/gui changes should be coming as well. I haven’t yet decided which features to have in 2.2 and which to postpone. Probably, the modebar and new workflow will have to wait, i will be glad if i get the filter layout changes finished in some reasonable timeframe for 2.2.
In other news, adept 2.2 branch is getting more and more useful on rpm platforms, thanks Bero for pushing that.
1.6.2006 Adept 2.0
Yes, Adept 2.0 is out. It is available in debian unstable and in the almost-released-now Kubuntu Dapper. There will be further development on the 2.x branch, leading to 2.1 release that will probably go into Etch and Edgy (unless i miss some deadline). Work on 2.1 has already started: all adept apps now show GUI much sooner and show a “loading, please wait” message.
Development
Current Features
- package list with customisable filters
- debtags-based drag&drop filtering
- package browser with package relations, file list and detailed info about package
- currently rather rough sources.list editor
- download, installation progress meters
- change review, status toolbar
- simplified interface for system upgrades: ?adept updater
- simplified interface for application management: adept installer
- system-tray update notification icon: ?adept notifier
Feature Plan
Adept 3.0
- port to libept 0.4
- try to recover more gracefully in case of fetcher or dpkg error
- quick filter should work with xapian?
- if no, do by-word conjunction
- jriddell will hopefully look into kdesu issues so we get rid of the debconf not working problem (by using kdebconf)
- user interface changes: modebar, new filter layout and friends
- make it run on ?fedora in read-only mode
- show changelogs in package details, get them from packages.debian.org/changelogs or changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs, respectively
- ddtp (debian description translation project) support
- new sources.list editor
- possibly some sort of channel support: spec up a .desktop file which would contain (whatever is needed for) sources.list entry and some nice description
- system description file to control things like supported sections, changelog site, channel sources and so on and so forth
Deferred
- dist upgrade support
- restart notification (maybe restart capability)
