Wild Beasts frontman Hayden Thorpe sounds like he’s spent the past ten years in a travelling freak show having nasty things done to his balls. While the rest of the band lilt bracingly along, his angry, otherworldly falsetto can make lines like ‘I’ve shorn and I’ve sheened and I’ve Brylcreemed, have I not?’ sound ludicrously melodramatic and pleasingly sinister. An acquired taste, perhaps, but you certainly won’t find another bunch of 21 year olds from Leeds making like a troupe of twisted dandies.
