ISLAMABAD: The former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (N) has won three out five National Assembly seats in Thursday’s by-elections but the Pakistan People’s Party, which won the remaining two, proved its countrywide presence in the Provincial Assembly tally. The by-election to a sixth National Assembly seat was postponed on orders by the Supreme Court over the disputed candidature of Mr. Sharif. The results, announced on Friday, will not affect the balance between the parties in the National Assembly. The PML(N) won eight out of 23 Provincial Assembly seats where by-elections were held. Of these, seven were in Punjab province, while one was in the North West Frontier Province. The Pakistan People’s Party won seven Provincial Assembly seats — three in Punjab, one in Sindh where it was elected unopposed earlier on two others, two in the NWFP and one in Balochistan — covering all four provinces. The Awami National Party won two Provincial Assembly seats in the North West Frontier Province. Independents took the remaining Provincial Assembly seats.
