Pasok de-registered
26 June, 2008

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's oldest political party, the United Pasok Nunukragang National Organisation (Pasok), has been de-registered by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

After almost 30 years in the local political scene, Pasok received the close-shop order on May 27 this year, following the leadership stalemate between John Richard Jayasuria and Cleftus Mojingol for almost a year.

Jayasuria said the de-registration has denied some 7,000 Pasok members to actively involve themselves in the political front while denying its supporters the choice of Pasok representing them.

In the last general election, Pasok attempted to field three Parliamentary candidates and 11 State candidates but the Election Commission issued a last- minute ban on them using the Pasok logo.

They were then forced to stand as Independent candidates.

During its involvement in the State political fray, Pasok produced only one elected representative when the then President, Ignatius Stephen Malanjum, won the Moyog State seat in 1985.

However, many of the past and present elected representatives are alumni members of Pasok including present Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Tuaran MP Datuk Wilfred Bumburing, former Deputy Speaker Datuk James Vitalis and Cash President Datuk Patrick Sindu.

Erstwhile Pasok Secretary-General Ambrose Obon said the party is at liberty to appeal to the Home Affairs Minister within 30 days as provided for under Section 18 of the Societies Act 1966 against the ROS' decision.
