Social Network MocoSpace Reports 3 Million Users

The largest mobile phone social network, MocoSpace, has passed the three million mark in registered users. The milestone follows a May report by browser company Opera ranking MocoSpace as the third most trafficked mobile site in the U.S. after MySpace and Google (News - Alert).

The rapid growth of MocoSpace is being fueled by word of mouth mostly from younger consumers that prefer the ubiquity of mobile phones and the easy meet-and-greet social experience the site offers. Member can create and browse profiles as well as send messages, upload and share photos, and more.

MocoSpace’s success demonstrates the value that users place on real-time mobile communication and photo sharing.

The average MocoSpace member comes to the site more than once a day and the site now generates over 1.5 billion pageviews per month.

“What we’re witnessing here is a sea change in social networking behavior. It’s moving from the web to mobile at breakneck speed, simply because people carry their phones 24x7. They don’t want to be sitting at a PC to be able to connect with their friends,” said Justin Siegel, co-founder and CEO of MocoSpace. “They’re coming to MocoSpace because it was built from the ground up for easy mobile use.”

The mobile social networking trend, according to analysts, is only going to continue to grow.

In May, digital marketing analyst eMarketer (News - Alert) issued a report projecting that over 800 million people worldwide will access social networks via their mobile phones by 2012, up from 82 million in 2007. That translates into a surge from 2.7 percent to 18.8 percent of mobile phone users.

The same eMarketer study reported that Facebook has four million users and MySpace (News - Alert) has seven million –a fraction of their overall online members.

“When you compare MocoSpace’s three million members to Facebook (News - Alert) and MySpace’s mobile numbers, our growth is even more noteworthy,” Siegel said. “It’s clear that many people are looking for social networks that deliver a great mobile experience, and we are delivering.”

Found in 2005 as a mobile social community, Mocospace was designed to help people find friends, have fun and stay connected on their mobile phone. The service is free and available on any Web-enabled mobile phone in the world.  MocoSpace is a privately held company with offices in Boston, Massachusetts and Herzilya, Israel.
