Opera Australia as Australia's national opera company has one primary aim: to present great opera for everyone. The merger of the Australian Opera and Victoria State Opera in 1996 into Opera Australia created the busiest opera company in the world.

Opera Australia performs at the Sydney Opera House for seven months of each year, encompassing the Sydney Summer and Winter seasons. The company is resident at the Victorian Arts Centre, Melbourne, for an Autumn season, in April and May and a Spring season in November and December.

As Australia's leading performing arts company, Opera Australia gives employment to approximately 1,500 Australians per year.

Many thousands of Australians also experienced the work of their national opera company through television, radio, video, compact disc, DVD and the annual free performance of Seven's Opera in the Domain in Sydney.

Opera Australia is a company which bears proud traditions of artistic excellence and popular appeal.

Opera Australia is a client of the Australia Council for the Arts' major performing arts board.
