Anberlin

Myspace

Brittany: When and how did the band form?
Stephen: Anberlin formed in late 2002 out of the ashes of several local bands in the area, we were not necessarily the "super group' but we were just 5 guys that wanted to pursue music with all our heart. It's been an incredible journey with a lot of down and ups… but clearly more ups than downs! Anberlin put out our first record in 2003 and its been a pretty exciting ride thus far!

Brittany: Where does the name Anberlin come from?
Stephen: There are several stories that have circulated on the internet, but the actual story is when I was in college my favorite band was Radiohead; on one of their songs off the record KID A there is a background noise on the song "Everything in its right place" (about 2 minutes 31 seconds into the song). While Thom is singing "try to say" I always thought the background noise sounded like "ANBERLIN", I always thought that Anberlin would have been a great band name and well… it was/is.

Brittany: Pick one song from Cities and explain its meaning.
Stephen: Godspeed: it's about different stories through rock and roll history where drugs (white lines/black tar & other such chemicals) played a major downfall or death in the persona's life. such as jimi hendrix, jim morrison, nico, moon, vicious, etc. its selfish and tiring. i feel that "rock stars" start believing their own hype and begin on an egocentric journey that inevitably ends in destruction.

Brittany: Who are some bands you would love to tour with in the future?
Stephen: The Smiths, The Cure, Led Zeppelin, ETC… We just want to stay on the road, there are tons of bands we would love to tour with, we just want to stay busy and tour with bands that we respect and music we appreciate.

Brittany: What song gets the best crowd response?
Stephen: Lately the song that gets the best crowd response is the song Godspeed, it used to be the paper thin hymn.

Brittany: Do you have any memorable fan experiences?
Stephen: Tons! One girl made us a cake in Virginia with all our likenesses on it with chocolate guitars on the sides. Another friend sent my mother a gift basket in the hospital this past year. We are Starbucks addicts so several times people have given us gift cards. And TONS more! It is just amazing when people give us a taste of home by making us gift baskets or care packages. But some of the most memorable experiences for me have been when fans tell them that somehow I have impacted their life for the better. I have received several emails and letters, which have meant the world to me, describing how people are following their dreams because of Anberlin's impact.

Brittany: How would you describe the bands sound to someone who has yet to hear it?
Stephen: Rock-indie new wave .

Brittany: If you could have every one of your fans go out and buy a cd of your choice [besides your own] what would that be?
Stephen: The Smiths- Louder than bombs or Jeff Buckley-Grace.

Brittany: What's the best advice you have been given about the music industry?
Stephen: That we need to enjoy it while we can, there are not many bands like rolling stones or U2. Just be content, and take in every second of being on the road in new cities, with best friends.

Brittany: If you could change anything about the industry what would you change?
Stephen: Where to begin!!!!!
1. Get back to the music and get away from imaging.
2. Sign great musicians, not a good single.
3. Feed back into the world & don't give in to the self-centered culture that the music industry has made so conducive. For starters.
