Carpathian

A lot has happened to the Melbourne-based hardcore quintet Carpathian since I last spoke with them. There's been the loss of their original guitarist (Anthony Harris, now in Melbourne hardcore band Pro Team) which resulted in a very controversial line-up change with original vocalist Marty (Kirby) taking up the responsibilities on guitars and ex-I Killed The Prom Queen vocalist Michael Crafter adopting the vocalist position. A lot of touring has also been on the band's agenda, including a very successful national tour with rock/metal supergroup Atreyu, as well as 36 Crazy Fists and 3. And now there's been yet another line-up change with the loss of their other guitarist, Julian Marsh, only days before touring New Zealand, weeks before the Resist Tour and months before touring Europe with label-mates and metalcore kings, Parkway Drive.

"Julian quit last week. He's all done with Carpathian now and it's mainly because of how busy we are with our touring schedule." Crafter explains.

"We start the New Zealand tour in a few days, then December is almost all booked out with the Resist tour. Then we are touring some more throughout January and February, then Europe in March. So none of us are really ever going to be home and Jules just wants to spend more time with his girlfriend and friends at home. I guess you either have it in you to stay away for a long time or you don't. He definitely did what he had to do for Carpathian and it's good he actually let us know now before we were flat out somewhere else.

"We already have a replacement who is going to start on the Resist tour. His name is Josh, he's from Wangaratta and we've had a few jams and he picked up the songs really well. So he should work out fine I think."

Obviously Carpathian tour very extensively - they have also supported some of the biggest names in local and international hardcore and metal acts around today, so when asked about how their recent shows have been going down and how they feel about their upcoming tours, Crafter explains, "The Resist tour should be really good; I have done it before when I was in 'Prom Queen. It's good that Graham [Nixon, Resist Records] started it up again because it was missed last year. It's a few varied line-ups and different shows so it's going to make it all interesting, we get to play with Miles Away, God So Loved The World, Cry Murder, Bad Blood, The Deadwalk! and others so it should be really fun. We are all friends and know each other pretty well so I am personally looking forward to it very much. It's definitely always good to tour with people you know, much better than strangers because it makes it hard and at times pretty shitty.

"The Atreyu tour was really good for example, I mean, all of them were just really big shows, it definitely got us playing to a lot more kids and that was pretty easy to notice. It's actually going to be interesting to see who comes out to the Resist shows, hopefully some new kids check us out because we are headlining some of the shows.

So what's the next step for Carpathian following the tour?

"A Europe tour with Parkway Drive and The Warriors [American hardcore band]. This band's whole aim was to try and get overseas in the first place and lots of bands want to do that. I have been lucky enough to do it with 'Prom Queen but it's good for the other guys to be able to experience this and with friends of ours in Parkway Drive. We are all pretty excited about it, that's for sure. We actually get to do our own headline tour of the UK too, about ten or so shows, and our album is coming out on a label over there called Golf Records. So hopefully that should help us get some international fans."

With such a hard working band like Carpathian it's safe to say that Australian hardcore is well and truly alive and, despite their extensive touring schedule and recent big line-up changes, it's obvious that nothing can keep this band down - it can only make them stronger.

dB Magazine proudly presents the Resist Records Tour at the Enigma Bar on Sat 16 and Sun 17 December featuring Carpathian, Miles Away, The Dead Walk, Bad Blood, Cry Murder and God So Loved The World.
