  Testing Procedure

When clients come in for the testing, they can expect the following to happen:

  1. Ha-Wo-Lon staff will do a "risk assessment." This is a series of questions that determine the client's potential risk of contracting HIV.

  2. After the risk assessment, the HIV test will be offered. The test can be done at Potawot and Weitchpec or the client can be referred to Humboldt or Del Norte Public Health, Northcountry Clinic, or other testing program for the test. Ha-Wo-Lon project staff uses the Orasure testing procedure, which is done orally. It is a quick and painless test. There is no blood drawn and no needles. All testing is done in a confidential setting.

  3. Results of the HIV test are not given on the phone. Clients must come back in for the results. An appointment to disclose test results is made at the time of testing.
When the client comes back in for the results, he/she receives post-test counseling from the Ha-Wo-Lon staff. If the test was negative for HIV, counseling focuses on how to reduce the risk of contracting HIV. If the test was positive for HIV, the person is either referred to Humboldt or Del Norte Public Health for the supportive services offered there, or to the Potawot Medical Department. If the results of the test are positive, it is disclosed to a healthcare provider of the clients choice. If the results are positive a release form must be signed by each client designating this provider prior to testing. If you have any questions regarding our HIV testing program, please call Trish Carlson at 825-5070 or 1-800-675-3693.
