Imagen noms show more variety of roles, stories
This year, the Imagen Foundation doles out its awards with even more gusto than in the past. "I am consistently amazed with the exponential growth in both the quantity and quality of the entries we receive each year," says Imagen founder Helen Hernandez.

Norman Lear Writer's Award: Ligiah Villalobos
Mexican-born scribe Ligiah Villalobos doesn't think her much-lauded debut feature "La misma luna" (Under the Same Moon) centers on the immigration issue at all. "It's more about abandonment and the struggle of a mother and child to reunite," she points out. Her "Luna" screenplay taps painful childhood memories of her own parents' divorce which had her shuttling between cities in Mexico, and ultimately between Mexico and the U.S.

Lifetime Achievement Award: Tony Plana
