The Hardangervidda is not a place of dramatic landscapes but about wide-open spaces. It is a hilly, treeless mountain plateau (= "vidda" in Norwegian) created during the last ice age. The area is characterized by moorland with numerous lakes and streams. Regarding its size of 6500sqkm and isolation it is one of the few places in Europe where you can experience solitude and enjoy the everlasting fresh breeze.
Whether you spend only a day or two weeks in the National Park is only a matter of preference and planning. Typical for Scandinavia there're huts scattered in the wilderness so unless you want to there's no need to carry a tent unless you want to. Regarding an altitude level of around 1100m and the exposed landscape the weather can be rather chilly even in summer time so take some wind- and rainproof gear.
