Bimmer vs. Beamer vs. Beemer

A very re-ocurring misconception about BMW machinery, is the terminology including bimmer, beamer, and beemer. Many people have been caught embarrassing themselves by referring to their car as a beamer or beemer. How would one such BMW enthusiast, be so naïve, to call their 5 series a beamer? Well it happens every day around the country, especially on the west coast!

Let’s once and for all straighten out BMW terminology.

Bimmer:

Bimmer refers to a BMW car (BIM-er). A bimmer must have four wheels and be able to hold several passengers. A bimmer can be a SUV; two very popular versions of bimmer SUV’s are the X5 and X3, although the popularity of the X3 is rather questionable. A bimmer M3 can whip around Laguna Seca, while super bimmers race in the 24 hours of Le Mans. A bimmer is capable of having 500 plus horse power, while other bimmers sport 22 inch chrome rims. The recurring theme amongst bimmers is they all have 4 wheels.

There's always going to be the wise guy who argues the MINI is a bimmer. Sorry buddy, but your MINI is not a bimmer! Calling a MINI a bimmer is equivalent to calling a BMW produced Range Rover a bimmer. Ish don’t think so!

Beamer and Beemer:

BMW motorcycles are spelled two different ways, however, are only pronounced one way. BMW motorcycles have two wheels, therefore are pronounced beamer. Of course some might argue that a BMW motorcycle can have three wheels, so it can not be a beamer or beamer, and must be a bimmer. No, a bimmer must have four wheels, so a BMW motorcycle with 3 wheels is just a BMW sidecar.

Bimmer, Beamer, and Beemer History:

You might be asking yourself how BMW cars got the title bimmer. Well this requires a glimpse into history. BMW motorcycles dominated well before BWM cars. People simply got tired of referring to their motorcycles as BMW’s. They were in desperate need of a “cool” pronunciation of the acronym. One smart fella began using the pronunciation beamer. Makes sense, until BMW cars began to gain great popularity. BMW car owners wanted their own “cool” saying as the beamer owners. To make a long story short, BMW car owners began refereeing to their cars a bimmers (BIM-ers). And the rest is history!

Bottom Bimmer Line:

Now that you know the difference between bimmer, beamer, and beemer; you might be wondering why so many people are still confused. Well most of the confusion comes from the west coast, as I mentioned before. This is primarily due the influence of Hollywood. Kids have grown up watching television shows like Beverly Hills 90210, and have been told BMW cars are beamers. American mass media for some unknown reason insist's on referring to BMW cars a beamers or beemers. So next time someone compliments your nice BMW 5 series such as “Your beamer is sweet bro”. You might want to ask them to refer to your car as a bimmer.
