Obama Counters McCain With Fox Appearance

posted by John Nichols on 09/03/2008 @ 5:38pm

ST. PAUL -- Talk about counter-programming.

On the night that John McCain will accept the Republican presidential nomination in this city, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will enter the "no-spin zone" on Fox.

Obama has agreed to appear Thursday on Bill O'Reilly's evening program, The O'Reilly Factor, for an exclusive question-and-answer session with the host.

Obama had boycotted the Fox New Channel during the primary season -- after the network's on-air person personalities savaged him and his campaign -- but a "truce" was worked out during a meeting between the candidate and Fox owner Rupert Murdoch.

Fox News Channel CEO Roger Ailes, a veteran Republican operative, says that Obama said in a behind-closed-doors meeting: "I just want to know if I'm going to get a fair shake from Fox News channel."

The candidate got some reassurances.

And now he's going on O'Reilly.

As it happens, O'Reilly, who has interviewed many prominent Democrats, including Obama's primary rival, New York Senator Hillary Clinton, tends to be soft on prominent players -- no matter what their politics.

The often bombastic host likes to keep the big players coming back to his show. And O'Reilly and Fox have made it clear, with announcements and on-air ads, that they are excited about the Obama interview.

At the top of "The O'Reilly Factor" website is an announcement that, on Thursday, "Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama enters the No Spin Zone for the first time ever! Don't miss this 'Factor' event!"

The Illinois senator's appearance is an event not just for O'Reilly but for Obama.

That the Democrat is doing so on the night McCain delivers his acceptance speech is smart politics. The interview will get noticed on a night that should belong to the Republican nominee.

In contrast to the media detente breaking out between Obama and Fox, Republican griping about the MSNBC cable network is escalating.

McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis has penned a letter to the president of NBC, MSNBC's parent network, in which he complains about what he describes as "irresponsible" coverage of the Republican campaign. And there is generalized anger at several of the broadcast and cable television networks for their hyping of the story about Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's pregnant 17-year-old daughter.

Even Obama has gotten into the act.

"I have said this before and I will repeat again. I believe people's families are off limits," said the Democratic nominee. "People's children are especially off limits. This should not be part of our politics."

Maybe you can cite a previous example in our political tradition?

Also, they did not leak it until about an hour before the actual campaign appearance.

Please we all know the purpose LVL. You are debating the grey area. If they really didn't want to disrupt the convention they would have waited till sunday to announce. It was meant to disrupt the press responding to Obama's speech. They were trying to take the press cycle away from Obama which is essentially the same thing, it's a disruption of the responses to the political speech. They are both playing the same game. You are just looking for something to hate him for today.

  13. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY'S OWN PEGGY NOONAN SAYS "ITS OVER"

Who is Peggy Noonan? She is one of a handful of the nationally known conservative pundits who has brain, brawn experience, stature and respect.

She is an author of seven books on politics, religion and culture, a weekly columnist for The Wall Street Journal, and was a primary speech writer and Special Assistant to President Ronald Reagan. She is considered a political conservative.

Five of Noonan's books have been New York Times bestsellers. Noonan is a Trustee of the Manhattan Institute. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Miami University, St. John Fisher College, her alma mater Fairleigh Dickinson University, Adelphi College, and Saint Francis College. She was nominated for Emmy Awards for her work on The West Wing and America: A Tribute to Heroes.

Anyway, she was on an NBC segment with Mike Todd today, and after she was finished speaking, her microphone remained "hot" and she continued to speak with the other guest, Republican consultant Mike Murphy. As some of you may know, satellite feeds remain live, and since the microphone remained on, and was apparently recorded by someone, you can clearly hear the continued conversation. She trashes both McCain and Palin. Calls it "political bullsh*it." and laments that "its over." Very telling, as it is a very candid and intellectually honest, and it comes from a well respected conservative. The fact that it is her private thoughts, and not public spin makes it even more credible.

Here is the link to the Yahoo story which contains a video of the broadcast and Noonan's after-broadcast comments. INCREDIBLE. PRICELESS You have to hear and see it to believe it.

  14. This is something that could really backfire bigtime on Barry. The first question that O'reilly will asy will go something like this, "will you Barack Obama, condemn NBC and MSNBC for their personal, offensive attacks on Sarah Palin?" The next question should be, "What exactly is your relationship with Bill Ayers?" Next he can follow up wit this, "What executive decisions have you ever made/"

O'reilly won't pull any punches and he sure as hell won't let Barry spin anything. It should be interesting.

  15. The "tradition" of steering clear of convention time isn't to respect the other candidate. It's because you don't waste your campaign efforts when the camera is focussed elsewhere. It isn't respect...it's about competition for airtime. The only REAL election tradition is that you don't schedule any interviews, photo ops, or appearances where there is likely to be dead air.

In this case, however, if FOX puts the camera on Obama instead of McCain, then Barack has successfully stolen a degree of thunder.

Kind of like McCain trying to give a speech in New Orleans on the night that Barack clinched his nomination in front of thousands of supporters. Only in that case, McCain's speech was a THUD.

Which means....they'll want to see that "bloodbath"...and not McCain's "I'm the same, but not" speech...

AND it'll mean that ALL the talk on right-wing radio AND Fox will be the Obama interview....not McCain.

AND it'll kill the happy-happy-joy-joy of the "monumental Sarah Palin speech"...under 24 hours in the news cycle!

The goal for O'Reilly and Obama alike is exposure to ears and eyeballs.

Win win for them and a win for americans trying to learn about the candidates. And if Palin hits a home run this evening, all the better. It will put the focus back on the issues where it truly belongs.

    Answer 1:

I am a big fan of the free press and certainly would not want to tell the press what to report or how they should report. That being said, I have always maintained that the family of public officials should be offlimits, but reports on Palin only having 18 months in office and the limited responsibilities she had as governor of a town of 5,000 people, her abuse of power in firing certain individuals, and her extreme positions like banning abortion in cases of rape and incest should be fair game, and I think the press is starting to cover some of those issues.

    Answer 2:

I currently have no relationship will Bill Ayers and have never condoned his political views. Years ago I served on a board with him for a charity group and that is about the extent of our relationship.

    Answer 3:

I have chaired many committees and subcommittees as a state and US senator, and was elected president of the Illinois senate in my final year there. In this campaign, I have been the chief executive, raising more money from more donors in history and spending this money judiciously and effectively in what most observers would say is a fairly successful campaign thus far.

In terms of legislative experience, I have spent 8 years as a state senator and 3 years in the US Senate where I am a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that my vice presidential nominee, Joe Biden, currently chairs.

This is the stupidest idea Obama has come up with so far, and the campaign has a lot of time left. Going on Faux News and O'Really's show in particular, has no value what-so-ever because the rightwing lunatic genocidal republican/democratic maniacs who watch Faux News and O'Really will never vote for Obama anyway. This gambit is bankrupt and has no currency to it at all. But what this should tell people, especially the leftwing base, is that Obama is adhering to the old, tried, tested, and FAILED strategy of shifting all the way to the far right to get votes from the mythical center. But hey, it's his election to lose, and if the past is prologue, the Democrats are experts at losing elections that they should easily win by landslide.........

Well, here in Multnomah County I am not sure we have ever had slavery or oppressive laws, although day to day existence may be different. My guess is that many counties in Montana and North Dakota have not had slavery, and oppressive racial laws were likely unnecessary.

Now if you meant countries, you are doing a wonderful skirting of the issue. The point to which I was responding was that somehow Obama was being disrespectful of American traditions, as if this was somehow inherently bad. My reply was that some of these American traditions included slavery and Jim Crow laws which thanks to people saying such traditions were for shit, they were largely abolished. As they should have been. Some traditions may be good, others are not, and then there are weak callings such as one night every four years where some sort of tradition gets ginned up like this convention bullshit.

But in the end Red River, I don't really give a damn what other countries do as I am a US citizen and care about what happens in my country. When I see my country doing wrong, I don't point at other countries and justify my country's wrongs because others do wrong. I think Jesus called such things hypocrisy. I don't construct my standards according to how others act--that's called being cowardly and weak.

Obama Had Close Ties to Top Saudi Adviser at Early Age Wednesday, September 3, 2008 5:58 PM

    By: Kenneth R. Timmerman

New evidence has emerged that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was closely associated as early as age 25 to a key adviser to a Saudi billionaire who had mentored the founding members of the Black Panthers.

In a videotaped interview this year on New York's all news cable channel NY1, a prominent African-American businessman and political figure made the curious disclosures about Obama.

Obama might pursue criminal charges against Bush· Biden says criminal violations will be pursued Elana Schor in Washington Wednesday September 03 2008 19:32 BST

Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November.

Biden's comments, first reported by ABC news, attracted little notice on a day dominated by the drama surrounding his Republican counterpart, Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

  67. This is in response to HelenDAO: Do you recall during the democratic primaries, former owner of BET, black billionaire Bob Johnson accused Senator Obama of being a "drug-dealer" on the southside of Chicago, instead of a community organizer? HRC kicked him off her campaign...so don't THINK because another black man makes those charges against Mr. Obama, that it's suppose to be law and gospel!! You people amaze me; all of you know that the senator is NOT Muslim, nor is he a communist! His platform resembles that of a 21st century FDR! Anytime black people speak truth to power, some whites villify them! Per usual, you don't know what to make of Barack Obama or his intellect; he doesn't fit the stereotype you've painted of the African American man. Those slave owners knew that if blacks ever learned to read, they would excel. That SAME FEAR, after all these years, is still alive and well! That is the REAL reason why you don't like Obama...he is young, gifted and highly educated; thats' what scares the hell out of you! Carolyn48

Fuck that. That's the problem. Marriage should have nothing to do with politics or government. It is a religious or a personal matter. People should marry ANYONE they want. The government should not be in the business of approving or disapproving of anyone's marriage.

Meanwhile, Obama is very competitive in Ohio, Florida, Virginia, Colorado and North Carolina. And McCain has hardly opened his mouth enough to put his foot firmly in it yet. Amusing indeed.

  74. McCain honored this tradition in the case of Obama, but apparently this level of class is not something that appeals to Obama. And O'Reilly (whom many here know that I have no real respect for), is equally disrepectful. Posted by lvliberty1 at 09/03/2008 @ 6:02pm |

If you want to talk respect and tradition, you have to include McCain jumping in with the announcement of his VP to blunt the impact of the successful Democratic convention. That felt off to me, but I didn't whine about it because I was too busy laughing at his wildly extremist pick.

    We agree on O'Reilly.

  76. The notion that Palin is an "extremist" is about as absurd as Glenn Beck calling Obama an "extremist progressive." Neither of these statements bears any semblance to reality.

The tendency, though for commentators to issue such wildly uncompromising claims is one reason people like Obama and Palin have such appeal. Both will transcend this ridiculous, parylizing polarization, a legacy of the baby boomers: They would simply do it in different ways. I was only half kidding above when I suggested the benefits of an Obama/Plain ticket.

Actually, Chip, her views on, among other matters, women's reproductive choice are absolutely extremist. In her view, the mother must die for the fetus, even if that fetus is the result of rape or incest. Make no mistake - that view is so far out of the mainstream of rational thought as to be ridiculous, especially as she considers the mass murder of 1.2 million human beings in Iraq to be "God's work" - yet another of her utterly extremist views. She is a Christian Dominionist (much like Larry), who would throw out the Constitution to proclaim in its place a theocracy in which she and her like-minded ilk would be required by law to be worshipped (and supported grandly on the taxpayer dime, if history is any indication at all). They all call it worshipping God, but have you noticed that God always agrees with their viewpoints? Beck is full of it regarding Barack as an extremist - he's a centrist. I do wish he were further to the left, but he seems a decent guy with a great intellect, a good heart, a desire to serve something more than himself, an ability to listen to other points of view, and the type of creative spirit that this country desperately needs after all these years of right-wing treachery. Palin, on the other hand, is little better than Dan Quayle on metaphorical steroids. And she gives hockey a bad name at the same time.
