Ten Post Round-Up: Superwoman Edition

by Dizzy Dezzi

By the time you read this post you will either have recovered from the Palin Speech Drinking Game or had enough Pepto to settle your tummy.  Of course, if you are like me, you probably opted for a refreshing rerun of CSI.

For those of you who prefer your Republican/Conservative news in bite-size portions, today’s Ten Post Round-Up will not disappoint.  But, before you proceed, you might want to indulge in a little musical interlude and remember that you are (or may very likely know) a Superwoman. Read more…

Palin Capitalizes on Family in the Spotlight

by Pamela Leavey

And, I thought Rudy Guiliani was nauseating tonight… Sarah Palin stood at the podium, exploited her family including her pregnant teenage daughter and her “intended” and blew the “Republican message about the Palin offspring” being off limits into a farce.

Unbelievable. But not… That is what these people live for and the wingnuts in the crowd ate it up, while that young couple at times, looked visibly uncomfortable.

Palin’s took jabs at Barack Obama in her speech, “misrepresented his record and simply lied about her own, claiming to oppose earmarks that she supported, and dissembling on her $1.5 billion tax hike and record of raising sales taxes by 25 percent in Wasilla.”

By all accounts, Palin faced a huge task in St Paul. She had to prove she was up to the job of commander in chief.

She struck out big-time — in a biting speech that showed the only job she was ready for is RNC Chair, another ruthless soldier in Karl Rove’s army.

The full text of Sarah Palin’s speech is here.

Drill Baby Drill

Listening to Rudy Guiliani’s speech and the RNC chanting “Drill Baby Drill” just turned my stomach. Actually everything Rudy is saying is turning my stomach.

An Open Mic Moment with the Conservative Punditry

by Pamela Leavey

Via Politico:

After a segment with NBC’s Chuck Todd ended today, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan were caught on a live mike ridiculing the choice of Sarah Palin.

Watch here:

Those talking heads and guests will never learn… As Politico notes, “Noonan’s blunt call contrasted with her conflicted column today saying Palin “could become a transformative political presence.”" Hypocrisy is everywhere from the right wing these days.

Josh Marshall has the whole transcript here. Ouch… And right before Palin’s big debut tonight.

Democrats Unveil ‘More of the Same’ Web Site

by Pamela Leavey

The D.N.C. unveiled a new web site today: www.JustMoreoftheSame.com. The NY Times blog The Caucus reports:

The site will feature research, videos and a blog highlighting Senator McCain’s ties to the Bush administration. Look for the video clip of Senator McCain saying that he has voted with President Bush 90 percent of the time to play a starring role on the home page.

There are also links to pages that purport to answer — from the Democratic perspective, of course — “Who is Sarah Palin?” and “What has the G.O.P. Done for Minnesota?”

Really the question should be “What has the G.O.P. Done for America… Other than make a friggin mess of it!”

Sarah Palin, The Gift That Keeps On Giving

by Pamela Leavey

John McCain’s VP pick Sarah Palin seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. There’s a lot we still do know about her and a lot that we do now know. Frankly, I think Palin is steeped in hypocrisy and I know I am not alone in that thinking. As the mother of 19 year old daughter, I am appalled at “Palin’s Handling of Other People’s Pregnant Teens.”

Today, Sarah Palin is being “prepped for prime time,” as McCain’s top advisors have been briefing “her on the nuances of his policy positions, national politics and, above all, how to introduce herself to the national audience” when she addresses the audenience and TV viewers at the Republican convention tonight.

We know now that Palin was barely vetted and the news that McCain “had criticized earmarks from Palin,” adds a new level of hypocrisy to McCain’s image as well.

Stay tuned… No doubt there’s still more to surface on Palin.

Ten Post Round-Up: We Won’t Get Shafted, Again

by Dizzy Dezzi

You’ve got to give McCain credit.  By welcoming Palin into his campaign, he sure livened things up quite a bit in this election (and no, I’m not referring to you-know-what, unless you know what is a bridge or something).

Truth be told, I don’t blame him for his (apparently) monumental screw-up.  There was not much more he could do after Obama pretty much drop-kicked McCain during his awesome speech, last week.  McCain can only hope that Palin will continue to be a distraction, especially if his big speech does not get the audience and/or the viewership that Obama’s did.

Looks like I got more to dish about Palin in today’s Ten Post Round-Up (after all, forewarned is fore-armed).  I heard that Jerry Reed (of Smokey and the Bandit fame) died today.  Searching for a song to link to, this one made me think of the Republican party and how we have been treated since GWB got the WH (S/He got the goldmine–I/We got the shaft). A Cyclist’s Un-Conventional Ride with John Kerry

by Pamela Leavey

There’s a great story about John Kerry mountain biking in Denver during the convention, that is so worth a read: “My Un-Conventional Ride.”

The cyclist who road with Kerry was just a little blown away by Kerry’s cycling ability and agility:

On to the ride. Immediately he bumped shoulders with me on the first corner and thought nothing of it. Then he took the first 22 mph pull with me, side by side, for a good 10 minutes. I was somewhat impressed, for sure, but of course we still had some hills to go up. so I withheld judgement.

Chugging along at a fair clip, about halfway up to Jamestown, he had dropped half the group and started asking me for ideas on how to improve some of the anti-doping legislation he has been working to introduce into the Senate. Of course I was so excited he had interest in this area, I spoke until I was blue in the face. And he just about dropped me. Conversation at 280 watts at 6500 ft is not the easiest thing for me, much less a 65 year old guy with a job like his.

Kerry is a ”real rider, with real knowledge of racing,” says Jonathan Vaughters. Read more…

Ten Post Round-Up: Coming Out Of The Dark

by Dizzy Dezzi

Finally back from my much needed summer break. Not sure if anyone really missed me, but I have to send a shout-out to all my chicas (and hombres) who had my back while I had my guard down.

Let’s jump right in, to today’s Ten Post Round-Up, why don’t we? The last few days have shed a lot of light on things supposedly known, things we probably wish we didn’t know, and will continuing shining light until November 5th. And, after being out of the loop for the last two weeks, I definitely feel like I am coming out of the dark. Read more…

Kerry: Palin Pick is “Insulting to Clinton Supporters”

by Pamela Leavey

John Kerry was on This Week with George Stephanopoulos today talking about McCain picking Sarah Palin as his VP. Kerry responded to a question from Stephanopoulos about whether he thought the Palin pick would help McCain garner support from women who supported Clinton. As always, Kerry was on the money… calling the pick “insulting to Clinton supporters.” Watch it here:

(h/t Osterly Times for the video). TIME Magazine’s blog The Page also has this from Stephanopoulos: “Stephanopoulos: “The Big Question… What Else Don’t We Know About Governor Palin”.

Scarborough and Buchanan Ridicule The Thought Of Palin Being On The Ticket

by Stuart O'Neill

As if the bombs dropping every day here and elsewhere aren’t enough, pundits Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan, who are generally conservative, are talking on their TV show about the possibility of Sarah Palin being named as a VP running mate. They simply said it wouldn’t work and that she was not, in any sense, qualified to be heartbeats away from being Commander-in-Chief.

Of course a few hours later she in fact was named the Republican VP candidate. I’m looking for the latest on Morning Joe to see his reaction.

This video has not gone ‘viral’ yet. Please visit the original YouTube site and recommend.

Pretty Palin’s Line About The Bridge To Nowhere Angers Many Alsakans

by Stuart O'Neill

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - It garnered big applause in her first speech as Republican John McCain’s vice presidential pick, but Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s assertion that she rejected Congressional funds for the so-called “bridge to nowhere” has upset many Alaskans.

[...]When she was running for governor in 2006, Palin said she was insulted by the term “bridge to nowhere,” according to Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, and Mike Elerding, a Republican who was Palin’s campaign coordinator in the southeast Alaska city.

“People are learning that she pandered to us by saying, I’m for this’ … and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting,” Weinstein said.

Much better coverage of this hypocritical, and easily uncovered, lie is in the Reuters longer story. Pretty Palin simply lied at the McCain annoucement as well taking Hillary’s line, “Thanks, but no thanks.” including the hand gesture. Those are words anyone can use but if ‘Pretty Palin’ was going to copy the most popular female politician in the United States, she should have at least given a shout out to the woman who she was copying. Who the hell vetted this woman? It’s another show of the incompetence of the McCain-Pretty Palin-George Bush ticket.
