November 23, 1999, Laetitia Casta became the symbol of France, while being elected by the 36 000 mayors of France like Marianne of the year 2000. With the 21 years age she becomes a character emblematic with dimensions French cockerel.

Previously Brigitte Bardot (1969), Catherine Deneuve, and Mireille Darc succeed it.

Laetitia Casta is selected as Marianne of France with 36% of the votes, clearly in front of her competitors: Estelle Halliday (29%), Nathalie Simon (16%), Patricia Kaas (14%) and Daniella Lumbroso (5%).
