The Earth's ecosystems, sustained by biological diversity and the complex interactions between living things, provide us with essential goods and services which support our social and economic development, our livelihoods, and our health. However, human activities have accelerated the rate of loss of biodiversity significantly above natural background rates. This threatens the sustainability of ecosystems and the flow of the benefits which they provide, and affects human health and well-being worldwide.
