Between 2002 and 2006,
Thomson Scientific indexed 39,909 papers that listed at least one author
address in Austria. Of those, the highest percentage appeared in
journals classified under the heading of immunology, followed closely by
clinical medicine. As the right-hand column shows, the
citations-per-paper score for immunology papers from Austria was 4%
above the world average (11.00 citations per paper for Austria, versus
the world baseline of 10.62 citations). Austria's performance was
notably strong in physics (66% above the world mark), materials science
(43% above), and molecular biology & genetics (+35%). And in social
sciences, Austria's impact score happened to match the world mark
precisely: 2.06 cites per paper.
