Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight #18

Friday, September 12th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Didn’t I Just DO One Of These?”

BVS1.jpg

I can’t tell if it’s a function of my tendency to be at least a week behind in my reviews (with my current schedules, I don’t usually buy my comics until Sunday afternoon, when I’m working) but it seems like I’ve been reviewing a lot of Buffy lately.  The good news is, it’s hardly a chore, as the book is humming like a well-oiled humming-thing-covered-in-oil, giving us drama, intrigue, some nice dialogue, and not skimping on the ol’ fighty-fighty, something that many comic books lately are eschewing in favor of all-singing, all-dancing, green-skinned alien flashbacks.  (No, I don’t mean “Betty and Veronica.”)  The story of Buffy going back to the future has lit a new flame under the leader of the Slayers, as she’s forced to come face-to-face with her own legacy, and see the real impact she will have had on the world…  As with any reality check, the slap in the face is complimentary with the service.

Review: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season 8 #17

Monday, August 25th, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “Marty!  It’s Your KIDS, Marty!”

BVS2.jpg

Time travel stories generally make my head hurt.  Since I’m an avowed fan of Doctor Who and the Legion of Super-Heroes, though, I have a tendency to muddle through the various threads of time-track paradoxy blah blah blah fishcakes and just roll with the punches.  Consider this, though:  Melaka Fray was, chronologically, the first Slayer to be portrayed to us in possession of the big red scythe (which isn’t a scythe.)  But Melaka Fray doesn’t exist until hundreds of years in our future, long after Buffy Summers, who found the weapon later, from our perspective, but actually was created first.  Is it a retcon or is it fate?  Only her colorist knows for sure, but right now, Buffy has to go… BACK TO THE FUTURE!!!

AppleGeeks Gets First Trade

Friday, July 25th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

applegeeksdarkhorse.jpg

In a day and age when web comics are being collected into trade form, it’s a wonder AppleGeeks never got the trade treatment.  All that changes in June 2009, when Dark Horse collects the series for the first time.

The first volume will include creator commentary, a pin-up gallery and other bonus material, and will sell for $14.95.

It’s going to include all the comics up through Eve’s appearance in the strip, but that’s not all - we’re currently in talks with Samantha (who you guys should all give a HUGE thank you, none of this would have been possible without her patience and enthusiasm!) to have a whole host of awesome bonus material crammed into the book as well! We’ll be sure to keep you guys posted as we get more info, but I’m going to go ahead and say that a couple of the ideas we have for bonus material are really exciting.

Good news for Hawk and Ananth!  I’ll be reserving a copy when it is solicited next year.

Review: Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Season Eight #16

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008--by Matthew Peterson

Or - “The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be…”

Ever since the beginning of the Season Eight storyline, comic fans have been awaiting the appearance of Joss Whedon’s OTHER comic book Slayer, Melaka Fray.  Those of you who are in the know may recall that the Scythe (which isn’t a Scythe) that Buffy carried in the last season or so of BtVS actually made it’s first chronological appearance in the Fray miniseries that Dark Horse put out, chronicleing the adventures of the Slayer of the somewhat far future.  The cover promises that Miss Summers and Miss Fray are about to finally come Slayerface to Slayerface…  What happens now?  I’m voting: tea party!

On the next Major Spoilers Podcast: Umbrealla Academy

Monday, July 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

UmbrellaAcademy.jpg

On the next Major Spoilers Podcast, the crew will take a look at the Umbrella Academy by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba.

Gerard Way, of My Chemical Romance, makes his comics writing debut in this outrageous superhero epic that Grant Morrison called “An ultraviolet psychedelic sherbet bomb of wit and ideas. The superheroes of the 21st century are here at last…” In an inexplicable, worldwide event, forty-seven extraordinary children were spontaneously born by women who’d previously shown no signs of pregnancy. Millionaire inventor Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children; when asked why, his only explanation was, “To save the world.” These seven children form The Umbrella Academy, a dysfunctional family of superheroes with bizarre powers. Their first adventure at the age of ten pits them against an erratic and deadly Eiffel Tower, piloted by the fearsome zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Nearly a decade later, the team disbands, but when Hargreeves unexpectedly dies, these disgruntled siblings reunite just in time to save the world once again.

As always, we want you to participate in the show.  Give your thoughts and comments about the first collected trade below. Or, if you are more daring, send us an audio comment in MP3 format for inclusion in the show.

Hellboy II Comes Out on Top

Monday, July 14th, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

hellboyii.jpg

Hellboy II: The Golden Army came out on the top of the heap this weekend, bringing in an estimated $35.9 million at the box office.  I went to check the movie out on Friday, and while it was a very good movie, I still like the first Hellboy flick better.  The acting was great, the makeup and special effects superb, but for some reason Hellboy II felt a whole lot like the first Men in Black movie.  I think it had something to do with the background gags and music.

Speaking of Will Smith, Hancock slipped 47% from last week, but was still able to bring in $33 million.

Goon Headed to the Big Screen

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008--by Stephen Schleicher

goon.jpgDark Horse Entertainment is bringing Eric Powell’s Goon to the big screen as a CG animated movie.

Created by Eric Powell in 1999, the comic follows the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The stories have a paranormal and comedic edge to them and concern ghosts, zombies, mad scientists and “skunk apes.”

While no studio has been signed for distribution, Blur Studios will be doing the CG work.  There’s also no word if this will be an original tale, or an adaptation of one of the existing story arcs.  I personally would vote for Chinatown.
