Karl Dean was elected Mayor of Nashville in September 2007.
He had previously served as Director of Law for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County since 1999 in the administration of another Vanderbilt Law alumnus, Mayor Bill Purcell, '79.
Before he was named head of the Metro Nashville Government's legal department, Karl Dean served as a public defender for nine years, having been elected to the post in 1990, and reelected in 1994 and 1998. He has also been an instructor in the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
