World-first research from the Australian National University has shown that unlogged native forests store three times more carbon than previously thought.
The research identifies that Australia has some of the most carbon dense forests on Earth - and that logging and clearing them has significant climate implications.

The Wilderness Society Queensland welcomes the climate change and environment targets announced by Premier Anna Bligh but has called for more detail about how these targets will be met.
In granting Gunns a further three months to obtain Federal Government approval for the Tasmanian pulp mill, Commonwealth Environment Minister Peter Garrett extends another lifeline to the project and does another special deal for the company that has repeatedly treated the government, the assessment process and the public with contempt.
The Wilderness Society today congratulates Commonwealth Environment Minister, Peter Garrett, for his strong support for the ongoing protection of the wilderness and wetlands of Shoalwater Bay in central Queensland, through rejecting an application for the establishment of a major coal port and rail line through the Shoalwater wilderness..
