MobileTechRoudup is #62 on Podcast Alley!

Motr_cover One of the most enjoyable things we do is the MobileTechRoundup Podcast where Matt Miller, Kevin Tofel and I get to chat about fun gadgets and other tools in the mobile tech arena.  We must be doing something right as right now MoTR is # 62 on the Top Podcasts list at Podcast Alley.  What makes this significant?  Podcast Alley has 36,575 podcasts they follow so #62 puts us in the top 0.1% of all of those shows!  We're only slightly behind the great This Week in Tech show by Leo Laporte which is pretty darn awesome.  If you listen to the show and haven't voted yet this month head over and vote for MoTR.  Maybe we can keep moving up that list.  It is also gratifying to see listener comments like this over there:

Terrific!
My favorite podcast of all. Just the facts, easy and genuine conversation. I feel like Im sitting in the room listening to the most knowledagble people I know.

MobileTechRoundup thanks you!

Itunes_top_25_2

Just a quick note before we run the kids around to their activities this evening: thank you MobileTechRoundup podcast audience. With your support, we finally cracked the iTunes Top 25 podcasts in the Technology / Gadgets section. We've come close before, but I think this is the first time you helped us get on the front page for this section. I've been noticing both the subscriber base and total downloads steadily increasing this year, so I've been watching and waiting for this. Our 30 minute show takes a collective four hours or so between James, Matt and I, so it's great to see that people continue to get value from the effort. We thank you!

INTRO: Based on Time v2.1 by Meta Sektion, additional mixing by James Kendrick.

HOSTS: James Kendrick (Houston), Matt Miller (Seattle) and Kevin C. Tofel (Philadelphia)

TOPICS:
Matt, James and Kevin couldn’t pass up the opportunity to record a show from the CES in Las Vegas, since all 3 were in the same place at the same time for the first time.  This show is recorded live from the Bloghaus in the Bellagio Hotel/ Casino and is the funniest show yet!  The trio learn first-hand the challenges of recording in a public place, and even pick up an unintended co-host who, shall we say, has definite opinions about mobile technology.  :)   The MobileTechRoundup censor was working overtime to make sure this show stayed clean for your listening pleasure.

First up on the docket was a rousing discussion of the Origami Experience.  Find out why the hosts are so impressed with this next version of the Touch Pack for Windows Vista UMPCs.

The OQO 02 is everywhere you turn at the CES and all 3 hosts have played with one briefly.  Is it improved over the original version?  Listen and find out.

What’s the one product announcement that has JK all abuzz?  Here’s a hint- it’s from Toshiba.

Find out exactly what drop-in Valerie thinks about the UMPC platform.  Bleeps in all the appropriate places, of course.

This show was recorded totally live in a very public setting and the background noise is much higher than we prefer but we think the impromptu nature of the show will more than make up for a little noise.

Special thanks to Podtech and Seagate for sponsoring the Bloghause, but not Robert Scoble (as per Kevin).

Since we've been prepping for CES, we took up a reader suggestion from Steve. Steve thought folks would want to know more about our backgrounds and how we ended up doing what we do, so.....here it is!

Digg adds podcasts; buggy but not bad for a beta!

Motr_diggDigg was its own big "digg" story yesterday with a new design layout and new features in an effort for wider audience appeal. The new podcast feature is slightly buggy from a feed perspective, but does provide another method to stream podcasts for listening. We've got MobileTechRoundup in the list, so if you've got time for a quick digg, you can do so here. If you're not a fan of the show, that's fine; we'd only want "diggs" from folks that gain value from the show to help spread the word.

The streaming function works well, much like it does for using Google Reader. The main difference is that instead of just digging a podcast, you can digg or comment on individual episodes, which is great for new listeners; they can see which episodes were most liked by the audience! Our full feed details aren't yet showing, so we're missing our picture, but hey: it's a beta and it's good approach by the Kevin Rose and company. I'm already seeing quite a few highly dugg shows that I'm interested in, so I see the benefit already.

Installing Vista RC1 on a MacBook Pro

If you were wondering just how big a geek MobileTechRoundup co-host Matt Miller really is I can offer you conclusive proof quantifying that fact.  Yesterday during the Mobius presentations all attendees were given Vista RC1 on DVD and Matt, who brought his MacBook Pro, didn’t waste any time.  He popped that DVD into the MacBook to install it under Parallels to run in a virtual machine.  Since Vista support requires the latest version of Parallels and Matt hadn’t upgraded he did so right there during the conference.  Once he had the proper version of Parallels downloaded and installed he spent the rest of the afternoon installing Vista on the MacBook Pro.  He was still having some issues at the end of the day but I’ll bet he has them ironed out by now.  I was sitting next to him at the conference and I have to tell you it is so cool seeing Vista running under Mac OS X.  Here’s some photos I snapped of it in action:

MobileTechRoundup site goes....mobile?!?

Motr_mobile Guess we got so focused on recording shows that we never got around to making the MobileTechRoundup website "mobile device" friendly. Heh...that all changes today! If you direct your mobile device to the podcast homepage, it will automatically detect if you're viewing it on a mobile browser. Instead of the all the full size glitz and glam, you'll get a basic text view of the podcast site, along with a direct link to download the latest show.

Looking for a prior show? No problem! Just scroll down below the current post and you'll see the last 10 posts and shows for your listening pleasure. We thought about making all of the prior shows available this way, but after some heavy duty thinking, we all agreed that nobody should have to listen to us more than 10 times in row. Actually, WE were pretty OK with it, but input from the wives and significant others indicate that we talk too much. Who knew? If you'd rather subscribe through iTunes, that's OK too, the subscription link hasn't changed.

A big shout out goes to Alex King for the awesome WordPress plugin that does all of the heavy lifting here. If you've got a WordPress blog and want to make it mobile, stop over at Alex's site for the plugin.

Congrats to Catholic Insider, winner of the Best Mobile Podcast

A sincere congratulations goes out to Father Roderick Vonhogen, host of the Catholic Insider podcast and Best Mobile Podcast for 2006. Based on prior comments and e-mails, I’m sure some folks will begin down the “Wait a second, how can that be considered a mobile podcast?” path. For what it’s worth, I’m going to offer my two cents: it is what it is and Catholic Insider is definitely award-worthy, so I hope folks will NOT raise the question of a podcast’s category. Instead, why not drop a note to Father Roderick and congratulate him?

Personally, I find that the soundseeing tours presented are top-notch and take people to places they would never get to themselves. Regardless of religious beliefs, I can honestly say that this podcast affected me profoundly last year. Whether you are of Catholic faith or not, when the Pope passed away, you knew about it because of the world leader status held by the Pope. I will never forget that time; not because of the news, not because of the television, but because Father Roderick shared the immense feeling of grief and loss with one of the most simplest, yet moving podcasts I’ve ever heard. If you missed it, it’s only 2:01 long. Hop on over to the Catholic Insider page and give a listen to CI #24 if you want to see what I mean.

Thanks one last time for the great support you’ve shown MobileTechRoundup! As long as you keep listening, we’ll keep recording!

Podcast Awards voting closed; winners in three days

Just a quick note to show our appreciation for your support in the Podcast Awards voting for MobileTechRoundup. The voting is now closed and winners are expected to be announced on August 15th. Win or lose, this was a fantastic validation of effort for James, Matt and I; on their behalf, I wanted to personally and sincerely thank all of the listeners. We hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy recording, producing and publishing it. Our hope is that in some way, you gain some benefit by expanding your mobile technology knowledge while actually having fun. The way I see it: if it's not fun, it's not worth doing! Best of luck also to the the four more than worthy competitors in the awards; I've listened to several episodes from each of their shows and every one of those podcasts is a winner in my book.

If you have the time and inclination to visit some of the sponsors who made the Podcast Awards possible, be sure to check them out. A special shout out goes to Todd Cochrane and Podcast Connect for the time and effort to make the Podcast Awards happen! Lastly, some our of friends in the blogosphere extended support for MobileTechRoundup on their sites, so it's definitely appropriate to thank them as well. Thank you to:

Sorry if we forgot anyone unintentionally, just let us know and we'll be sure to edit. Thanks again!

Linux on a Samsung Q1 UMPC- sort of

Motr_coverOn the current MobileTechRoundup podcast Kevin, Matt and I discussed the possibility of installing Linux on a Samsung Q1 UMPC.  We pointed out that while it is possible there are a lot of things you give up that are not available on a PC like the Q1 running under Linux.  One of the sticky points with putting Linux on one of these special devices is the touchscreen.  It is difficult to find drivers that work and when you are lucky enough to find them the lack of pertinent application software to utilize the touchscreen properly is a real downer.

jkOnTheRun reader Joel Mclaughlin pointed me to a blog by a guy that successfully (loose definition) installed Ubuntu on his Samsung Q1 and has chronicled the whole process.  The author addresses the hardware that is often hard to get working under Linux (as we discussed on the podcast) and details the hoops he had to jump through to get things like WiFi, the display, and the touchscreen to work.  He did in fact get the touchscreen to work by searching high and low for a driver but the lack of any utility to calibrate the screen forced a manual configuration which is detailed.

So did the author get Ubuntu running well enough to use it on the Q1?  I’ll let him answer:

So you might ask why I don't switch to Linux then? Well I'm missing the excellent ways of using the touch screen for input. The TIP in Windows XP Tablet Edition is very nice. Esp. the integration of the different input methods, using ink or an on-screen keyboard is superb and the handwriting recognition works very good as well. I didn't find any handwriting recognition software for Linux! For a working one which is nicely integrated into the desktop I'd even be willing to pay (just because I'm using Linux doesn't mean that I only use FOSS)!

I know that there is gok and dasher but somehow usage is much more hassling. The concept of dasher is interesting but it needs too much space. And in gok I'm missing the special keys like ALT, CTRL and so on which I do need sometimes even using an onscreen keyboard (not very often, but still). Space usage of gok isn't very good as well for such a small device…

I activated accessibility for GDM but somehow no virtual keyboard shows on login (how should I login without an USB keyboard then?) and if a su dialog box appears and looks the screen, gok can't be used as well — how bad!

So it seems we were right on in our discussion on the MoTR show– give it a listen to hear what we had to say about putting Linux on ultra-portable devices with touchscreens.

MobileTechRoundup welcomes Matt Miller (palmsolo) to the crew!

Motr_cover_2_1Kevin Tofel and I are very happy to announce that Matt Miller, aka palmsolo, is joining the MoTR team as co-host of the MobileTechRoundup podcast.  Matt is a long-time contributor to geek.com and has recently been blogging on ZDNet (The Mobile Gadgeteer) and on his own blog palmsolo.  Matt brings a wealth of inside knowledge and experience with the Palm platform and is an expert on Nokia phones.  We believe Matt will provide a dimension to MoTR that has been missing since Kevin and I are very Windows/ Windows Mobile centric.  Matt is also a great guy and we can't wait to record our first show as a trio.  Please join me in welcoming Matt to the show and while you are waiting for the next show to appear (which should be real soon now) hop over to palmsolo, geek.com and The Mobile Gadgeteer and check out Matt's writings.  You'll see why we're both thrilled to have him join the show.  Kevin is thrilled because Matt recently got a Samsung Q1 so they can both gang up on me (of course, my Sony can beat up their Q1s).  I'm thrilled because I am pretty sure this is the first podcast to be hosted by at least two Q1 owners.  :)    Shoot us some questions or suggestions for the show and we'll address them, I promise (fingers crossed behind back).  Welcome Matt!

First annual MobileTechRoundup meet and greet in NYC a huge success

Last night the MobileTechRoundup podcast gang got together in New York City and geeked out for a few hours and it was a blast.  This meetup was particularly fun as Kevin, Dave and I have never met in real life and we met up for dinner with Dave Zatz.  I don’t believe a collection of hot mobile devices has ever been assembled in one place anywhere.  The meetup was amazing as we had people come in from as far away as Washington DC and Connecticut just to geek out with us.  Dave has posted a nice recap of the evening including some photos and a really cool video.  Here’s a couple of photos to get you over to his site to check out all the rest:

MobileTechRoundup podcast cracks top 50 of all Libsyn podcasts

Motr_libsyn_1What an exciting day for Dave, James and I. Libsyn recently started a daily Hott 100 podcast list based on impressions and we just found out that we cracked the top 50, coming in at number 49! This daily list is created by Libsyn and all of the Libsyn-hosted podcasts are eligible for ranking based on traffic hits for the prior 24 hours. While we don't know how many podcasts are actually hosted by Libsyn, we're exceptionally proud to be in the top 50 based on yesterday's numbers. Of course, we quickly perused the list to see if there are any other mobile technology podcasts ahead of us; we're happy to say: NOPE! :)

We wanted to give a special shout out to all of the podcast listeners because if you didn't subscribe or listen, we wouldn't be on any list at all. Your gracious support has made the last 43 shows in the past 6 months worth every minute of our time and for that, we're sincerely appreciative.

Auto-transcribing podcasts?

I think it would be really cool if someone could come up with a way to automatically derive written transcriptions from podcasts. This would work similar to speech recognition programs but it needs to be speaker independent to be effective, kind of like closed-captioning used by TV stations. The purpose for producing written transcripts would be two-fold- make podcasts available to those in the community who are deaf and unable to access the information shared in the many podcasts now available and to make the shows searchable once the transcripts are published.

I would love to hear from those in a position who have thoughts about possible solutions that could be used from existing technology. I am willing to work with anyone using any of the podcasts I produce as a test case, with the hope of eventually using this on a wide range of podcasts. Please contact me if you have any ideas along these lines, or post a comment here. Let's see what we can come up with as a community effort.

EasyReach- desktop search for the Blackberry

On a recent MobileTechRoundup podcast Dave Ciccone told us about Avvenu, a way for Pocket PC users to access information on the desktop via Google Desktop Search. Om Malik is now telling us about a program called EasyReach that allows users to search the desktop from a Blackberry. EasyReach uses its own search and indexing system so new users can get up and running right out of the box without installing other software. Returned search results can be instantly sent to any email address from the Blackberry, including your own. There is a 30 day free trial for EasyReach but I could find no pricing information on the web site indicating what the service will cost you after the trial period expires.

Libsyn is down this morning

The hosting provider for both the OnTheRun with Tablet PCs and MobileTechRoundup podcasts appears to be down this morning so anyone having difficulty downloading either show this is the reason. They are normally very reliable hosting service so I am sure they will be back up shortly. Even their main web page is down at the moment.

What mobile gadgets does President Bush carry?

On the first MobileTechRoundup Podcast Dave Ciccone, Kevin Tofel and I discussed what mobile gadgets we carry around every day to make our life and work easier. A reporter in Argentina asked President Bush what he was carrying around in his pockets and the answer points to the ultimate mobile arsenal. Bush's reply- nothing. He only had a handkerchief in his pockets. The ultimate mobile toolkit? A private jet and an entourage of dozens to do everything for you. Nice gig if you can get it.
