Chris Sharma and Alex Puccio won the Mammut Bouldering Championships in Salt Lake City on August 9.
Sharma took his second victory in a row at the annual comp, held at night in a spectacular open-air setting atop a hotel parking garage in downtown Salt Lake. Entering the finals after a relatively poor performance in the qualifiers, Sharma was the only finalist to flash three problems. Ethan Pringle topped three problems but flashed only the last, on the undulating 18-foot overhang nicknamed the Stackasaurus after wall builder John Stack. No one could stick the final move on problem 3.
The women’s final was even closer, as Alex Puccio and Alex Johnson, last summer’s winner in SLC, each flashed three problems and reached the same hold on problem 3. That left judges counting attempts on the third problem to declare Puccio the winner.
The Mammut Bouldering Championships, presented by Eastern Mountain Sports, began with a qualifying round with over 100 competitors at the Front Climbing Club in Salt Lake City. The comp is held as part of the Outdoor Retailer summer trade show
