MAPMES, The Masters of Arts Program in Middle
East Studies is an intensive MA program, in English, which covers several disciplinary approaches and provides in-depth knowledge of the Middle East--its history, societies, cultures, economics and politics.

MAPMES offers intensive seminar classes as well as Arabic and Hebrew courses. Students are invited to participate in the department's international workshop, which focuses on cutting-edge topics in the study of the Middle East; the program also  includes a study-tour to one of the countries in the region.

MAPMES is open to a selected group of students from all over the world, who in the future plan to pursue doctoral studies or work in government and non-government organizations. No prior knowledge of the area is assumed, however, the motivation to stand up to the challenge of an interdisciplinary study environment is required. Hence, MAPMES has determined three main goals:
  • To provide students with an in-depth familiarity and interdisciplinary understanding of the region.
  • To familiarize students with the up-to-date theory and methodology as they engage in research in various aspects of life in the Middle East.
  • And, in a broader context, to encourage critical writing, analytical thinking, scholarly research and broad and flexible cultural perspectives in the study of other societies.
The program is uniquely incorporated within the Department of Middle East Studies in Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which allows the MAPMES students to establish close relations with faculty members and visiting scholars, and to integrate with local students.
