United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Coverage: Patent information is available from three major databases:
    • US Patent Full Text Database (contains full-text content of US patents) issued from January 1, 1976 to the most recent weekly issue date.
    • US Patent Bibliographic Database (contains front page information from US patents) issued from January 1, 1976 to present.
    • AIDS Patent Database, which includes the full text and images of AIDS related patents issued by the U.S., European and Japanese Patent offices.
  • Free Services: This site is completely free.
  • Features: Users may conduct fielded and boolean searches or search by patent number. The full-text returns include the Summary, Claims, Description, and References. Drawings and images are not available online. Search tips and help are provided at the site. This site also includes a lot of information about patenting. Patent application forms can be obtained from this site (requires Adobe Acrobat).

Delphion Intellectual Property Network

  • Coverage: Free searching of a wide variety of data collections and patent information including...
    • United States patents (1971 - present)
    • European patents and patent applications (1979- present)
    • PCT application data from the World Intellectual Property Office (1990 - present)
    • Patent Abstracts of Japan (Oct 1976 - May 1999)
    • IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletins (1958 - Jan 1998)
  • Free Services: Searching and viewing of scanned images allowed (front page only).
  • Commercial Services: Complete pricing and ordering is available. Subscription needed to print images.
  • Features: Bi-directional hyperlinking of patent references allows users to locate and view prior art by navigating through all cited patents and access later patents that reference the existing document.

Micropatent Patent Web

  • Subscription Required.
  • Coverage: Patent information is accessible from the three major patent authorities: US, EPO, and PCT (World Intellectual Property Organization).
    • US patents (full text) available back to 1836 - present.
    • EP-A documents available from December 20, 1978 - present.
    • PCT applications available from October 19, 1978 - present.

Community of Sciences US Patent Citation Database (Internal Use)

  • Subscription Required.
  • Coverage: Search bibliographic information on all US patents from 1975 to present
  • Features: Searching can be done on the entire database, a selected five year period, and for newly issued patents by state or country in addition to classification, etc.

esp@cent Europe's Network of Patent Databases

  • Coverage: Search for published patent applications from around the "worldwide" patent information - (30 million documents) and Japan mostly back to 1970. Search also for patent applications in their original languages published in the past two years.
  • Free Services: Users may search using simple text, patent application numbers or by company name. Search results include the bibliographic data and an English-language abstract for each document published. If they are available, drawings and the full text of the documents are provided online.

STN Easy

  • Subscription Required. Sign up online for STN Easy.
  • Commercial Services: No subscription fees. Pay a low fee ($2.00) for each search you perform, with an additional charge for each answer you display. Invoices are mailed monthly.
  • Features: A web-based search interface, allows you to use the Patent Lookup tab, an intuitive, patetn-specific search tool that allows for quick, simple lookup of patent information. Only patent-oriented databases, categories and search fields are available. Access to the full text of a patent is available through the ChemPort Connection.

DOE General Council Patent Database

  • Coverage: Search, retrieve, and browse hypertext bibliographic citations of patents and patent applications owned by DOE or its contractors or assignees. Associated full text is available for some current patent applications.
  • Free Services: This site is completely free.
  • Features: There are basic and advanced search modes offering a variety of searching and sorting options.
Trademark Information

USPTO Trademark Information

  • Coverage: TESS contains more than 2.9 million pending, registered and dead federal trademarks.
  • Free Services: All searching and viewing of existing trademark application and registration information.
  • Features: The Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) provides searching and viewing of existing applications and registration information.
    The Trademark Application and Registration Retrieval (TARR) system provides status information by searching for a trademark by its Serial or Registration numbers.
    The Trademark Electronic Application System (TEAS) is the electronic application process.
