It sure would be an awkward family reunion. But, believe it or not, Barack Obama is related to both President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
OK, distantly related: Obama and Bush are 11th cousins.
That's because they share the same great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great grandparents -- Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soole Hinckley of 17th century Massachusetts.

After a stay in England, he settled in Maryland, changing his name along the way to Duvall.
Mareen Duvall is also the link between Barack Obama and Harry S Truman (Duvall is his ninth-great grandfather as well) and Barack Obama and Vice President Dick Cheney (Duvall is Cheney's eighth-great grandfather). Read More

It makes some of today's political attacks look pretty tame.
In 1664, Obama's great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great grandfather Jonathan Singletary was found guilty of slander and defamation in a colonial Massachusetts court for accusing John Godfrey of witchcraft.

A fair amount of attention has been given to Falmouth (or Fulmuth) Kearney, Obama's great- great- great grandfather on his grandfather's side. Kearney sailed from Ireland -- Moneygall, County Offaly, according to some researchers -- to New York in 1850, when he was about 18.

Catherine Goodnight Dunham is one of the links between Barack Obama and Harry S Truman.
She was Obama's great- great- great- great grandmother, and her first cousin once removed was Rachael Goodnight Young, Truman's great-grandmother.
If you're keeping score, that makes Truman Obama's fourth cousin four times removed.
Catherine Goodnight is also the grandniece of George Goodnight, who is the great-grandfather of famed cattle pioneer Charles Goodnight, according to family genealogies.
A former Texas ranger, Charles Goodnight drove cattle from Texas to New Mexico and invented the chuckwagon along the way. He is said to be part of the inspiration for the character Woodrow Call in Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer-prize winning novel Lonesome Dove.

He didn't discover America -- but he did fight to keep the nation together.
Christopher Columbus Clark was Barack Obama's great-great-great grandfather, not his great-great grandfather, as Obama wrote in his book Dreams From My Father.
But Obama was right about Clark fighting in the Civil War. Listed as Columbus Clark, he served 51 days as a private in the the 69th Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia, under Capt. Thacker, in the fall of 1864, according to Missouri state records.
