VERSATILE Scottish international defender David McNamee has joined Argyle.

McNamee becomes the latest member of the Green Army's Tartan Brigade after being released by the Pilgrims' Coca-Cola Championship rivals Coventry City.

The 27-year-old Glaswegian has signed a two-year deal, and joins countrymen Steve MacLean, Chris Clark and Jim Paterson in the Argyle squad.

The capture of McNamee represents the culmination of a long-term interest in the full-back from Pilgrims' manager Paul Sturrock.

"I've tried to sign him a couple of times," confirmed Luggy.

"He's a very versatile defender, who can play in several positions, and he's very quick.

"He has played for Scotland and for Blackburn and was doing very well with Coventry before he had a few injury problems, and is a very good footballer.

"He definitely brings another dimension to our squad and I am really looking forward to working with him."

McNamee, 27, began his career at St Mirren in 1997 and quickly earned a big-money move from Paisley to Premiership high-fliers Blackburn Rovers.

However, he failed to break through into the Rovers' first-team in three years at Ewood Park and returned to Scotland to join Livingston in 2002.

He played more than 100 times for Livi as they established themselves in the Scottish Premier League, and was a member of the League Cup-winning side in 2004.

That form propelled him into the Scottish national team, and, at the end of the cup-winning season, he made his debut for Berti Vogts' side in a 1-0 friendly victory over Estonia in Tallin.

Cap number two came in a 4-1 victory as a late substitute against Trinidad and Tobago at Hibernians' Easter Road ground. Both games featured future Pilgrim Stevie Crawford.

The 2005-06 season was bittersweet for McNamee, who was hampered by injury and played in only 15 games as Livingston were relegated from the top flight, but who earned a recall from Walter Smith to the Scotland squad.

He was as a substitute in two games in the Kirin Cup tournament in Japan, which the Scots won by beating Bulgaria 5-1 and drawing 0-0 with the hosts.

His achievements had alerted English clubs again, and he journeyed south again to sign for Micky Adams at Coventry in June 2006.

He made 16 appearances in his first season after suffering hamstring problems, and endured similar concerns last season, when he was restricted to 13 games.
