Goalkeeping Courses
Goalkeepers are often the forgotten players during training sessions. They spend most of the time standing in goal with orders to stop all shots. Obviously that is not sufficient training for a player who is possibly the most important member of the team. Goalkeepers are players whose performance can influence the result most noticeably. They are specialists and therefore should be coached as such.
The SFA have put together a coaching programme especially designed for goalkeepers. It looks at the equipment needed, how to warm up, good handling and shape, mobility, positioning and catching and distribution. The programme is delivered as a series of three courses leading to the Scottish FA Goalkeeping Licence
Level One – Goalkeeping Certificate This 6-hour course is designed to assist coaches aged 16 or over who work with goalkeepers from children to adult. It comprises a practical session, together with 2 short video presentations, Working with Young Footballers and Basic First Aid. Applicants must be aged 16 or over.
Level Two – Goalkeeping Intermediate Certificate This 12-hour non-residential course is designed to further develop coaches, aged 18 years and over, who work with goalkeepers. The course is largely practical in nature and deals with topics such as shape, mobility, shot stopping and basic handling. Applicants must be aged 18 or over and must have completed level one Goalkeeping Certificate course.
Level Three - Goalkeeping Licence This 6-day course is aimed at specialist goalkeeping coaches working with senior goalkeepers. Theoretical input includes Physical Preparation, Diet and Nutrition, Psychology and Management Techniques. Course members will be involved in teaching practice situations and will be assessed on the final day Successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced check by disclosure Scotland undertaken by the association.
