Cheers: A House Divided

Robert Sean Leonard by Adam Taylor/Fox
Cheers to Robert Sean Leonard for bringing down the House. He's been doing skillful, subtle work for two decades — I always thought he should've gotten a huge movie career out of Dead Poets Society — but Leonard has never been better than in the aftermath of Amber's death. As Wilson has finally stood up to his abusive mentor ("We're not friends anymore, House. I'm not sure we ever were"), Leonard has more than held his own opposite the formidable Hugh Laurie. So where's his Emmy nomination?

RSL was amazing again last night. It is true -- he is doing something Amber would have wanted to speak his mind and do what was right for him. Wilson puts up with so much crap from House and it's amazing he hasn't stood his ground before.

So where's his Emmy nomination?

I'm just copying that for emphasis.

I don't want to see Wilson change House's character much but it would be nice to see House reciprocate the affection Wilson has for him. He can still be snarky to everyone else.

Wilson is the heart of this show. I love him to death. I laughed at all his quick and witty lines to House when he was trying to discredit the other dr who had the migraine medication study.
I cried when Amber died and he went back to their empty apartment and found her note.

The man deserves an emmy atleast. I hope that House actually feels bad and shows his remorse a tiny bit to keep Wilson here. I hope House does change more like what he was like in the beginning of the show where he wasn't as cold and cruel as he is now. (well it isn't a huge change!lol)

RSL has shown his craftsmanship in being a perfect foil for House's curmudgeon, while not losing his boyish mischieviousness, a caring mentor for Cameron, a caring and sometimes conflicted doctor. Every scene he is in is improved for his presence. He should have been nominated for an Emmy for the season ending episode. Let's hope he is not overlooked again !

"So where's his Emmy nomination?"

Since Season 1 of House, I have been asking the same question. Hugh Laurie is amazing, but his character wouldn't be as strong without RSL.

I absolutely agree with everything above, including the Dead Poets Society reference. While I frequently tire of the same old formula each week, RSL brings me back. (And I love Hugh Laurie when the writers set up scenes like the final one last night and several in the season finale that give him a chance to show a glimmer of vulnerability and depth, so please don't consider my praise to RSL a slight on Laurie.) I even love the Machiavellian Wilson who can do an end run around House--generally for House's own good.

RSL consistently amazes me, and last night was no different. The fact that he didn't get an Emmy nom, particularly after last season's finale, is a huge mistake.

As much as I love award shows, the truth is that many gifted performers are overlooked year after year. It may be because their show is on a Premium Channel on cable, or that they are part of a large ensemble in a procedural show where an actor's work tends to be underestimated. Maybe they are not the most beautiful, or the most popular; or they are character actors whose faces are recognizable but whose names remain obscure. Whatever the reason, actors like RSL - who is a star of the Broadway stage - get 'lost' in the sheer number of Emmy worthy thespians who grace the small screen each week.

This man gave a Master Class in acting on that Season Finale, and it's a pity that he was not nominated this year. At least he has the respect of his peers and the heartfelt appreciation of his fans. His talent raises the level of the game for Hugh Laurie, of that I'm certain. It's a thrill to watch them.
