Introduction

The Department of Earth and Space Science, Graduate School of Science of Osaka University is a unique department established in 1995, aimed at developing a new horizon in the research and the education of earth and space science from the physics-based perspective. Goal of the research activity of our department is to understand the extreme state of matter in space, even including life, and to solve a wide variety of phenomena which occur in space, planets and the earth, on the basis of the outcome of modern physics..

The Department of Earth and Space Science consists of three major areas: (1) Astrophysics and Planetary Science, (2) Earth and Planetary Material Sciences, and (3) Extreme Material Science. The related disciplines are theoretical astrophysics, X-ray astrophysics, planetary science, geophysics, theoretical and experimental condensed-matter physics and biophysics. A total of 28 students are enrolled each year for the Master's Program and 13 for the Doctor's Program.

Our department emphasizes fundamental physics as the basis of earth and space science. Hence, the research and the education are conducted in close collaboration with the Department of Physics, Graduate School of Science. Meanwhile, our department always seeks for and is open to talented researchers and students from a wide variety of fields not limited to physics, such as astronomy, geophysics, geology, mineralogy, biology and engineering. We wish to go beyond the traditional framework of science to develop a new frontier of interdisciplinary science, and construct a new style of earth and space science as integrated science. Fruits obtained from such researches will open up a new perspective in the problems of Earth environment in the 21st century, the question of the origin of life on Earth, and eventually, an entire human life in the future.
