Profile of the President of the Republic of South Africa

President Kgalema MotlantheKgalema Motlanthe was born on 19 July 1949 in Alexandra township, Johannesburg, to a working class family. Most of his childhood was spent in Alexandra and much of his adult life was spent in Meadowlands, Soweto.

In the 1970s, while working for the Johannesburg City Council, he was recruited into Umkhonto we Sizwe. He formed part of a unit tasked with recruiting comrades for military training.

Decision on Chikane's end of tenure is not yet concluded

The Presidency wishes to clarify that no decision has been made by President Motlanthe and the Director General Frank Chikane about the DG’s tenure in The Presidency beyond the end of his contract on 31 October 2008.

President Kgalema Motlanthe has informed Dr Tomaz Augusto Salomao, the Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), that the government of South Africa supports former President Thabo Mbeki’s continued role as the SADC-mandated facilitator in the Zimbabwean dialogue.
