Review

by Andrew McGregor
20 November 2002

The Chemical Brothers return with their rebel rockin' fifth studio album that blows all stylistic boundaries down in the process.

Bigger, bolder and more adventurous that what's gone before, Push The Button is almost certainly their most accessible in a discography that has seen them chalk up an impressive 8 million units in a little over a decade.

As before, collaborations are plentiful with Q-Tip's wordy rhymes gracing the lead single, "Galvanize". Electronica returns to centre stage with former collaborator and Charlatan, Tim Burgess (who first featured on 1995's Exit Planet Dust), making a welcome return on the cutting edge, hook-laden "The Boxer"; a theme that is replicated in near-"Block Rockin' Beats"-style on the angst "Come Inside".

While "The Big Jump" will undoubtedly have the neighbours bangin' on the wall - this intoxicating rush of synthesizers, electronics and layered drum machines needs to played at maximum volume to be true appreciated and understood.

But it's not all steam rollin' beats and tormented wordology. Anwar Superstar (Mos Def's brother) represents the hip-hop nation on the edgy militant "Left Right" - a whirling dervish track with Middle-Eastern political stylings. While from the other end of the cultural spectrum Kele Okereke (singer with art-rocks Bloc Party) is featured on the chewier funk of "Believe" that employs both tuneful tones and obscure samples.

But all is not lost. Moby's long awaited Hotel will no doubt have TV advertising executives salivating in anticipation, while new sets from Daft Punk and Timo Maas show there's a definite air of optimism to be had and plenty of reasons to pitch a tent in a muddy field.

On Push The Button the Chem's once more utilise their trademark crystalline electronica, oddball percussive journey, and kaleidoscopic sonic textures. Once more Ed and Tom have constructed a blindingly innovative and relentlessly propulsive album that's an exhilarating listen and is a worthy addition to an already impressive collection.

they are still going strong ; leading where others flounder. doing for the uk what kraftwerk did 4 germany. chemical brothers n new order most influential dance acts this country will ever produce.
humayun vale fm

This album is amazing, I'm getting so addicted, its like I'm taking drugs.
China

And yet another brilliant album.Received harsh reviews around these parts(Detroit).Probobly from people who did'nt know what to expect. It is an addicting album that explores what the future is for what most thought was "a dead sound." To all the negative reviewers,If you dont like it,don't listen to it.Nobody can blame you for not having a single creative bone in your body.As for The Chemical Brothers.Don't stop. There is always a need for more.
Baddy,Detroit,USA

sounds great, but what is the *galvanize* song about??
Vad!m, Ukraine

Sorry to say this but as with 'Come with us', the Chems appear to have lost their way here. It's not all bad but just way short of the first 3 albums. Mind you, they aren't the only big 'dance' acts who've made some not v good recent albums e.g. Underworld and Orbital.
Sasha, Cheltenham

"galvanize" that's it what i need. This is my THE BEST song of this album. When i've heard this song, i thought, i must buy album.
marcin slupsk

I think the album is simply brilliant!!! I've just seen them in Glastonbury and they were FANSTASTIC! They were worth the 3 days of mud and bad smell.
Cecilia- Mexico

Like a fine wine the bros just keep getting better with age. Love the album nice work guys. Surface to Air is sublime!
Mark, Fort Lauderdale Florida

Without doubt their best album since 'Dig Your Own Hole'. Class.
Woodsie, Waterford

OMG! Veeery cool, get this now!
Matt - Andover

"Believe" and "Surface To Air" are superb tracks, the latter reminisicent of fellow electronica band Faithless when they're on song. Some of the othe tracks are a bit tiresome and unenjoyable. The CD Surrender remains their peak IMHO.
Art, Southampton

Very enjoyable dance music. That is what the Chem Bros. have been making for years. I really liked this album especially, Side D - 'Marvo Ging' is a stunning track!
Dair, W.Scotland

Quality, good tracks; Close Your Eyes, Marvo Ging, Surface To Air, Hold Tight London. There are some really powerful tracks on here people
Duncan, Leicestershire

Good, good, good, dance, dance, dance, yeah, yeah, yeah! 3 x hurray for Chemical brothers! HURRAY, HURRAY, HURRAY!
Duki, Belgrade

Hold Tight London is great, although very different from the rest of the album...
Rale, Uzice

Shake- Break- Bounce! While I too favour (some of) their previous work to this, the new tracks can be fun in their own right. I think that Galvanize wins so much adoration because it is one of the few that gets down to business straight away. Others threaten to provoke a yawn.
Graham, Washington

I heaard this album and i love it. it's defintiely my type of music- and i've got a good taste, aight... ;)
petra, stuttgart (germany)

Very innovative stuff, the more you listen, the more you like it, not as good as Surrender though
Bruno, London

I really dont like this album, i love everything else they have done. My favorate track on the album is Surface To Air. Buy Come With Us.
Mij, Widnes

how can you not like this entire cd??? no two songs are alike, it shows just how innovative and versitile these guys are! talk about expanding your mind: the positive message is awesome!
Candice, Columbus, Ohio

good~
bacboo, Korea

Push the button is great! Everybody's talking about galvanise, yeah it's awesome, but also the big jump is magnificant!! Just like all the other songs.. Keep on going guys ;)
Talia, Brussels

i could listen to galvenise all day. it's catchy and just makes u wanna dance!
me @ meworld

ROCK ON chem bros, rock on, you guys almost make up for the disappointment of Daft Punk's 'Human after All' CD.
Amy - Ontario

i love it and belive is so cool
cookie middlesbrough

I like the Q-Tip track - B for effort.
Donald - New Orleans

Galvanize is cool!!
Valentina, Italy

Galvanize is a great single. It's catchy, dancy and innovative. Well done guys!
Irene, Liverpool

Sound like T-30 Control hanging on the ceiling
Pete - Chichester

The only button I'll be pushing is the one that silences these dullards forever. Most tedious.
Richard, Herts.

They used to explore new ways. I ve already heard every piece of this. There is nothing new. Yeh, still great music, perfect job. But its not as proud as it used to be. Easy listening :(
Kuře, Prague

You want a brilliant and varied dance album then seriously look no further! This album kicks off straight into "Galvanize": The driving, Eastern influenced, dance track to rival all others. Put this on a loud and bassy set of loudspeakers and try not to move (you can't help but to tap some part of your body), on an extra note you'll be seriously blown away by this track on a surround sound system! Track 2 "The Boxer" kicks off with a neat repetitive (but not annoying), dance beat and this song is also guaranteed to get you moving (possibly more than Galvanize itself). The next track "Believe" is a fantastic display of what a club track should sound like, just imagine living next door to some teenagers with a serious sound system and ur probably there with this one. Track 4 is my personal favourite and I would go so far as to say it is my favourite track of all time! "Hold Tight London" is amazing! A true masterpiece of a song! Sublime relaxing lyrics placed on top of a brilliant driving drumbeat and moody string effects make this song a true pleasure to the ear. You can have this record on a 24-hour loop and not tire of it a single bit. I strongly recommend this to anyone with musical taste! The rest of the album, if i decide to take repeat off after Hold Tight London, is a mixture of hip-hop variants, relaxing dance tracks and driving drum beats, notably track 5 "Come Inside" for the heavy dance fans, the very political "Left Right" and the neat "Close Your Eyes" and another personal favourite "Surface to Air". Overall this album is a must-have for anyone with the slightest interest in dance and electronica music, however I would recommend just buying this album for Hold Tight London alone, it's worth every penny! The Eastern influences are very clear, especially in "Galvanize", "Hold Tight London" and the highly interesting "Marvo Ging" which is what makes this album so unique and special in the dance genre. As far as I know it's something only attempted by Delerium (link for anyone who loves Hold Tight London). If you haven't got this album by this far into the review, get it now! JB <('-')>
Jonathon - Devon

Cool Album, I guess it's one of the best they made yet. People out there who like electro, you should check out Daft Punk - Human After All.. found it quite good..
Ian - Malta

An improvement on "Come With Us" but not as ground breaking as the first 3 albums. Well worth a purchase though
Ali, London

thay are cool lol
ricky

I missed the point on the first seven listens. But evolution is a fine thing. The great thing about Chems albums is that they are all standout in their own way. Everyone's got a favourite, sure, but there's never a duffer. No exception here. And I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Shake Break Bounce. Get it played on a night out and everything will be made clear!
Russ, Staffs

This is awesome funky beats. If you don't like it, well too bad. "Hold Tight London" is rippa.
Clive, Leeds

They just keep moving forward! This album is different. I love the world sound of Galvanize. When I heard Marvo Ging I thought it was Leo Kotke! So the album is a real mix. I can always rely on the Chems making an entire album worth listening to. I expect them to win some awards for this album!
Martha, Okinawa Japan

i think it is alreet really, but i didn't buy it, it was a present
jennifer - on computer

terrible-push the OFF button white noise sounds better. get a grip lads we know you can do it so go do it!!!
seán derry

I've never listen to a so beautiful electro pop rock dance disc it's an album that won't never stop to play in your own hi fi...
Manuele Italy

a masterpiece.
mef in florida

These guys get awesomer! We are in our fifties and wish we could club but our "kids" wont let us!
Eddy & Stephanie Powell, Nottingham

I downloaded it a few weeks before it came out so that i would know the tracks for BDO. Since then i have the LP and CD. Amazing they are taking music to a new level
Jono, Melbourne

its different from their other stuff but they still got the magic
alex- forest of dean

This album is a work of genius. The brothers have resisted creating a clone of past works, and the result is that this is the most chemical album to date: It reeks of eastern mysticism, charm and rhythm. View this album as a complement to others, not a substitute: an album to be played for trippier, lighter moods. Stand out track? The Big Jump. Genius.
Simeon, Cardiff

The boys are back on top form with this outstanding album.I slung it on the cd player in my hotel room on a recent trip to rome and it blew my mind, every time i listen to it since it gets better and better and reminds me of wine and pasta in rome which is all good.Galvanise is the top track with its spooky beats and clever lyrics but there are other gems too like boxer featuring tim burgess.to be honest i thought this would be a 2 track album but i'm happy i was proved wrong welcome back to the chemical brothers.
David Dodds,UK

A big fan of the Chem's from day one, and this one's alot diff from previous releases. It does sound like they've broken the shackles and had fun in the studio though. Agree that it's a 'grower'- not so much a 'dance' album but nice to listen to. Surface to air if top notch. At least they're trying something different which is refreshing.
Glenn, London

I'v listened to it just once. This is my second time at the moment. My first thought was. It's nothing really special:( But as my memory serves me right i felt the same after COME WITH US has been released. And i really loved Come with us for a longer while now am bored with it. I think that push the button is a grower!!! So let's give it a time. peace people!
Dominik Cracow

I think some people consider themselves a bit above good music because I can't understand how anyone could find this album disappointing. It is an amazing album but unfortunately they can't pander to everyones desires...
Ngahina , Christchurch

If it was by anyone else, it would be classy. But it's just *not* Chemical Brothers - too poppy and fluffily light.
Danny, Glasgow

WOW 2 the ZA! This album is emotional, life changing! I'm a Fan. Surface2Air is what dreams are made of...
Rufus - Kazakhstan

Lighter and more complex than prev. albums. Freakin A. a nice change in direction from the bros.
Matt - Winchester

Yeah... Marvo Ging, The Boxer and Come Inside all gave me a great pleasure. Another fresh evolution to there amazing sound.
Phil - Bendigo, Australia

The Chemical Brothers have set a new standard with Push the Button... Unlike some of their older cd's i love every track and have trouble taking it out of my cd player. Keep it coming!
Simon, Melbourne Australia

I was realy looking forward to buying this album but actualy found it rather dissapointing! I have listened to it all the way through and wasn't impressed. I found that the single Push the Button was the only one i truely liked real shame! :-(
Anneka Leamington Spa

As always, the chemical brothers evolve. Maybe I've been spoiled by these guys, but the much-publicized Galvanize seems dull and sluggish in comparison with the rest of the album. Standouts include "Left Right", "Believe", and the glorious "Close Your Eyes."
Ted from OR

Sounds a bit dated nowadays, Sortof dance musik for the radio 2 crowd.
Tim - Perth WA

i am so loving this album-so deep,so funky,so trippy,so so good.i think its as good if not better than surrender which is(was)the best record ever made!!!chems are back long live the chems!!!!
werd,london

It sounds pretty awesome to me.
lyrrad - melbourne, aus

Well.. What can I say but that the album is superbly consistent from start to finish. The only real bad part about it is that it just ends.. so suddenly. Need more!!
Dan, Southampton

thank God! it's great to hear innovative, fun electronic music again. and don't compare it to the past...they shouldn't do what they've already done before! totally dig it...
Blaine, NYC

I'm not hearin it. Sounds like our boys are very tired. Shame. 3/10
David, Boston

Push the button is a lot more diverse than any of their other albums, and very experimental, but it works brilliantly. Class album!
Kiara, Shrewsbury

A Fantastic album. I do think the last track sounds a touch like U2's "Where the streets have no name"
Ronan, Dublin

its good but nowhere near their earlier stuff. in decreasing order of greatness: 1) Surrender 2) Exit Planet Dust 3) Dig Your Own Hole 4) Push The Button 5) Come With Us
dave,dublin

I must be missing something because the only good track on the album i think is galvanize, i would describe the other tracks as noise not music
Paul, Leeds

Push the button is nothing compared to their debut, and Dig your own hole. Most of the songs are weak apart from the single (which I think is ace). This album is reaching for something fresh and new but doesn't even get close to the finish line. If you think about the last track which is pleasant but doesn't actually go anywhere, and compare it to the brilliant Private Psychedelic Reel...going wrong somewhere, the brothers gotta work it out
Kate, Dublin

It's fairly vocal orientated and mid-tempo, but repeated listens confirm that this is a class production! There's a bit of block rockin', but mostly funk, hip-hop, trance and acid.
Ben, Australia

Except for 'Galvanize', this would be AWFUL. Their problem is their studio has too many buttons to push. Keep it simple in future brothers and lets have some melodies instead of awful screeching synths and dirgy vocals. 3/10.
Matt, London

Yeah OK it's the Chemical Brothers but they've produced something really thin on the ground with this and I don't think it deserves the 4 or 5 listens you'll need to get to know it. Don't even compare this to their older stuff. OK, we've been starved of decent 'dance' music for sometime because of the amount of Razorlight, Keane, Franz Ferdi-get-on your-nad clones out there but that doesn't mean this is good, because it's kinda drab. OK, stick up your car stereos on full vol. and you won't care but musically this is lightweight.
RAJ, Brazil

Another great album, the boxer is superb. Still doesn't touch surrender!
Tony - Bristol

Like all great records, repeated listens reveal new depths - an uplifting experience. Top notch.
Derek, Hamilton

Fantastic! Superb! Brilliant! The Chemcial Brothers have done it again. Another great album from the them. There is so many great tracks to choose from but my favourite ones have to be 1) Surface to Air 2) Hold tight London 3) Marvo Ging although nearly all of the tracks deserve their own wee shout each. Enjoy.
Gordon, Plockton

Chemical Brothers are the best artists in the world right now. Innovative, resourceful, always pushing the envelope. Their ability to transform sounds and beats into a virtual landscape with a tangible sense of humor makes every album its own journey. Another classic.
Nathan, Vancouver

A really good album from the Chems. Agree with above, this work better as an album, where perhaps previous albums have relied on individual songs. The final 3 tracks are superb - Surface to Air especially. My top 5 chem albums: 1)Surrender, 2)Dig Your Own Whole 3)Push The Button 4)Come with Us 5)Exit Planet Dust...and even that is great.
Loz, London

Another great album from one of the best dance artists today (IMO). Can't wait to see em at the point in a few weeks. Their live sets are mind bending.
Eoin, Fahan (Ireland)

This album is rubbish. I have never really been fond of the Chemical Brothers however I was intrigued by the extraordinary hype surrounding this release as well as the middle eastern influences in their latest single featuring former 'A Tribe Called Quest' rapper Q-Tip. I picked up the album and I must say that the aforementioned latest single is the only song that I like. The rest of the record is absolutely dreadful... Dance music has been on a heavy downward spiral over the past few years and this Chemical Brothers album is doing absolutely nothing to reverse the trend! AWFUL!
Babak

i concur - safe, swift and pure steadyness mr wild. anygood!!!
GREM -Wolverhampton

Well after listening to the full album, I am disappointed in not all of the sounds but most. The whole album has samples from sounds they had in previous albums too. PTB reminds me of the sucky songs on surrender, not like music:response, out of control or even under the influence. I still love the chemical brothers but this new album is not kosher with me.
Emron, Canada

surprisingly good (just because the last disc they did...it was nothing special). The last song (surface to air) is one of the best they have ever wrote. Overall a real good album.
Andrea-Geneva

You probably won't hear many better dance albums this year
Simon ,Cardiff

This album makes me wanna push the button. Fantastic.
Aksu - Brussels, Belgium

Safe, Steady, solid and of course, Swift. They keep doing it, churning out monsterous beats, bleeps and acid tweaks in fantasic fashion. As Pete from Libertines would say "its better than Crack!" Enjoy.
Steve Wild -Wolverhampton

Come with Us..... I think we all already have. Push the Button is just another mind blowing set of tunes. Blinding.
Gaz, West Mids

I think there is a much greater fluidity to the album as a whole. Whilst individual tracks may not be as standout as some previous, it is very easy to get lost amongst the album as before you know it, it has been and gone
Si, Sheffield

Well, lets hope that with this release and the upcoming Daft Punk album, some serious collaboration will arise again.
Tomas Thoren, Gothenburg, Sweden

The album is fantastic. Galvanise was an immediate WHAT IS THIS track when hearing it on the radio, but the rest of the album takes a couple of listens to really infiltrate your mind. Stand out track is Close Your Eyes feat The Magic Numbers.
Talia, London

chemical bro rocks belive is unbelivable and The big jump is cool too. thanks
kush from australia

funky like the Talking Heads on acid. I'm lovin it. Peace.
Jeremy- New York

...and I'd also like to point out that Exit Planet Dust came out in 1995. How sweet life was then!
Richard - Leeds

I'd just like to point out that Tim Burgess originally sang on Exit Planet Dust on a track called Life Is Sweet!
Chris, Dublin
