In the middle picture, Manfred is bending over his ATS, while team boss Gunther Schmid
is talking to a BMW employee behind the car.

Manfred Winkelhock may be best remembered for an enormous crash he had
on the old Nurburgring in 1980 with his Formula 2 car, when his car flipped
and he crashed, but was able to walk away unscathed.

Manfred Winkelhock tried to make his Grand Prix debut with Arrows in 1980,
but he failed to qualify. 1,5 years later with ATS he tried again; this time successfully,
and in only his second Grand Prix he managed to score his only F1 points of his career:
a 5th place at the 1982 Brazilian Grand Prix.
The rest of his Formula 1 career was a frustrating one with inferior cars, and lots of bad luck.
Occasionally Manfred could shine, thanks to the engine (BMW),
but mostly his cars let him down.
Winkelhock was a very fast driver who also tried his luck in other categories of motor-racing.
Mainly touring cars and sportscars.
During one of those events, the 1000 kilometers of Mosport, Canada, in August of 1985
Manfred crashed heavily and died. Only 32 years old.
