NFL NOTESFamiliar Names on Expansion Draft ListWednesday, January 18, 1995 The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars will have some high-profile, high-priced veterans such as Steve Buerlein, William (Refrigerator) Perry, Chris Doleman and former 49er Pierce Holt available in the NFL expansion draft. More SportsExcept for AFC champion San Diego and NFC champion San Francisco, teams were required to turn over six names each for the expansion pool by yesterday noon. The Chargers and 49ers will add their players after the Super Bowl. Although the names will not be released until tomorrow, a number of them became known. Quarterback Buerlein and wide receiver Clark, who both signed as free agents, were unprotected by Arizona. Perry, a 10-year veteran, won fame with the Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears in the 1985 season. He was a marketing phenomenon, celebrated by the advertising community and centerpiece of the Bears' Super Bowl video. Released by Chicago in 1993, he signed with the Eagles and spent the last 1 1/2 seasons with Philadelphia. The Eagles also placed center John Hudson, defensive back Al Jackson, fullback Brian O'Neal, defensive back Otis Smith and tackle Broderick Thompson on the expansion list. Defensive lineman Holt signed as a free agent before the 1993 season. Doleman, a six-time Pro Bowl choice, came to Atlanta from Minnesota in a trade this season. Their respective annual salaries of $2.32 million and $2.7 million make their selections unlikely. The Washington Redskins placed wide receiver Desmond Howard on the list, along with defensive lineman Leonard Marshall and tight end Ethan Horton, The Washington Post reported. All three are due to make big salaries next season and none has performed as expected. Denver also offered some familiar names, including running back Rod Bernstine, linebacker Mike Croel, cornerback Ray Crockett and offensive lineman Brian Habib. VERMEIL PUSHES CARSONDick Vermeil, the ABC television football analyst who wanted to coach the Philadelphia Eagles, thinks former defensive coordinator Bud Carson should get the job. Speaking last night in his first public appearance since Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie last weekend decided not to hire him as coach and general manager, Vermeil said he urged Lurie to pick Carson. He did not disclose Lurie's response. -- The Jaguars named Lucious Selmon, a former All-America defensive lineman for Oklahoma, the team's outside linebackers coach. Selmon, 43, joins the Jaguars from Oklahoma, where he has coached for 19 years. -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino will not need further surgery on his Achilles tendon and plans to continue his rehabilitation plan. Marino was examined by the Dolphins medical staff and three other foot and ankle specialists and all decided against further surgery. -- Wade Phillips, fired as coach of the Denver Broncos after the regular season, was hired as defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. He replaces Walt Corey, who was fired by the Bills on January 2 after seven years. -- The Minnesota Vikings added John Levra and Foge Fazio to their coaching staff. Levra, who spent the last two seasons with Denver after working with the Chicago Bears for seven seasons, will coach the defensive line. Fazio has spent last five seasons with New York Jets as linebackers coach and will coach inside linebackers.
