11-year-old killer institutionalized

The facility where the girl is institutionalized
An 11-year-old girl who killed a classmate at a school in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, was institutionalized Sept. 16 at a facility in Tochigi Prefecture.

The girl was moved from a juvenile home in Nagasaki, where she had been in custody since the June slaying, following a Sept. 15 decision by the Sasebo branch of the Nagasaki Family Court to send her to the facility.

The court said she had failed to develop the skills necessary to interact with others.

The state-run facility in the town of Ujiie is the country's only facility for girls with the power to place inmates in solitary confinement.

The girl killed Satomi Mitarai, 12, on June 1, by slashing her neck with a box cutter in an empty classroom at Okubo Elementary School in Sasebo.
