MANILA, Philippines—“I wouldn’t be surprised if I learned that Judy Ann was hurt. I’d feel that way, too, if I were in her shoes. I know how important ‘Ploning’ is to her,” said award-winning filmmaker Jose Javier Reyes.
Inquirer Entertainment sought Reyes’ reaction to the impending box-office face-off between his Star Cinema film, “When Love Begins,” and Judy Ann’s “Ploning,” which both open in cinemas tomorrow.
Juday was reportedly unhappy about Star Cinema’s decision to schedule the theatrical release of “When Love Begins” on the same date as her movie’s. The actress, who has made several hit movies and TV shows for the Kapamilya network, is a co-producer of “Ploning.” She is often seen these days on rival channel GMA 7 promoting her film.
“I love Juday and Ryan (Agoncillo, the actress’ boyfriend). This is why I’m going to the premiere of ‘Ploning,’” said Reyes, who worked with the couple in the blockbuster “Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo” and its sequel, “Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo."
More than money
Reyes added that he called the couple a few days ago to explain his side. “I told them I didn’t call the shots here; when to screen the movie is the producer’s decision. But they’re mature people, and they know that Aga (Muhlach) and I had nothing to do with the play date.”
Reyes said he felt bad that conflicts like this arise at all, and noted that it could have been avoided. “This is too much. Ang liit lang ng industriya, we should all be helping each other,” he said. “As I keep repeating: I’m not a Kapamilya nor a Kapuso. Ako ay isang katrabaho. I believe that, more than money, friendship and trust are important. Money comes and goes, but if you lose someone’s trust, mahirap ibalik.”
“When Love Begins,” featuring Aga and Anne Curtis in the lead, is partly shot in Boracay. Reyes describes it as a “very personal” film.
“I wanted to capture Boracay exactly the way I feel about it. The place has personal significance for me. It’s probably the only place where I can be myself, where I never feel trapped. Doon kasi pantay-pantay ang lahat,” the filmmaker said.
“When Love Begins” is Reyes’ eighth collaboration with Aga. Gary Valenciano sings the theme song. Also in the cast are Rafael Rosell, Desiree del Valle and AJ Dee.
