BLOODDRUNK

Blooddrunk surprises with a small progressive style on one side and with very fast and thrashy songs on the other side. Children Of Bodom managed it to increase heavyness again which can be heard in almost all of the impressive songs but also the melodies are getting their due. The album can even compete with Hate Crew Deathroll and shows that Children Of Bodom will have to be reckoned with in the future which is proved by songs like "Hellhounds On My Trail", "Blooddrunk", as well as the slow and very atmospharic "Banned From Heaven".

1. HELLHOUNDS ON MY TRAIL

After a short counting on the hi-hat "Hellhounds On My Trail" starts the album, making a clear statement: Children Of Bodom are back and more aggressive, angry and experienced than ever. In spite of rather untypical, even Slayeresque lightning-fast solos, "Hellhounds On My Trail" is a distinguishable Children Of Bodom song and a melodic deathroller. In Jaska's words, he's very proud of the style the band has developed over the years and "Hellhounds On My Trail" is the prime example of it. Lyrics of the song are about what Alexi doesn't like about his life: mistakes made in the past that come back around to haunt him. A story-free video for the song was shot in Germany, December 2007. Was played live in 2008.

Janne: Musically, it has become one of my favourites.

2. BLOODDRUNK

The title track tells about addiction to spilling your own blood. A gloomy keyboard intro starts the song that is at the same time catchy yet extremely heavy with group shouts in the chorus playing a big role. This first single track from the album is Henkka's favourite Children Of Bodom song to date. Katapult Filmproduktion filmed a ghost town themed video for Blooddrunk in a former barracks in Eastern Germany in December 2007. Was played live for the first time in the Spinefarm UK Launch Event in London in March 8th 2008.

Janne: With that triplet thing, the song feels really fresh musically.

3. LOBODOMY

Heavy drumming with fast drum rolls and crushing guitar riffs fit well to "LoBodomy's" lyrical theme, courtesy of Kimberly Goss, which deals with frustration with all the trash talking on the internet. A melodic interlude part - reminiscent of one of the melodies on "You're Better Off Dead!" - in the middle of the song followed by some of the most impressive solos on the album bring balance to this bonecrusher with many tempo changes. According to Janne, the tricky "LoBodomy" is the most difficult song on Blooddrunk to play.

Alexi: The whole song is super fucking angry. It's got that vibe to it: "These guys are super fucking pissed off!"

4. ONE DAY YOU WILL CRY

"One Day You Will Cry" starts with a keyboard intro that could be from the Miami Vice soundtrack: It has a strong 80s vibe on it. One of the few easy accessible songs on the album, has super catchy melodies in it that flow throughout the whole song that has a pretty dark feel to it. Aggressive verse riffs make this song diverse though. One of Alexi's and Janne's absolute favourites on the album that will definitely be a live favourite in the future. The song is about Alexi's bad moods, when he feels like the worst person in the world as he's hurt so many people. Was played live in 2008.

Alexi: It's very melodic and so forth but it's also like a punch in the face. Especially with this song, I'm really happy with the vocals.

Janne: Compared to some of our other stuff, it's almost like pop music! But it's cool.

5. SMILE PRETTY FOR THE DEVIL

The first song that was written for the album contains one of Alexi's best headbanging riffs and has a great combination of heavyness and melodies. Fast drumming and Alexi's angry vocals where he sings about a "female character we all know", give the impression of a very aggressive song but at the end it gets slowed down a bit with impressive solos. Was played live in 2008.

Alexi: This one sounds a lot like us and it's "as Bodom as it can be".

6. TIE MY ROPE

A fully re-recorded version of a song originally recorded for Bam Margera's "Viva La Bands Vol. 2" compilation CD. This fast paced, beautifully grooving song got a facelift in the Blooddrunk sessions in the form of a new, totally different guitar solo. Was played live for the first time in Spinefeast At Sea, January 30th 2008 as the new version still unknown to the public. Alexi and Janne jammed to Tie My Rope in the NAMM 2008 event, adding a few additional solos and passages to make the instrumental song more interesting for a showcase clinic.

Janne: We didn't have that much interest in doing this song because we'd already recorded it once for this Bam Margera compilation "Viva La Bands Vol. 2". Even though it's a good song, it feels like there was no challenge left.

Alexi: But I definitely feel that the new version is better.

7. DONE WITH EVERYTHING, DIE FOR NOTHING

Arrangements for this song turned out to be a big problem because the song had to be changed a lot, even after the "final" version was recorded in the studio. Endless amounts of different riffs and structures were tried and it almost seemed to be impossible to make a working song of it. Then the band got a new chorus and after that everything worked from alone. The structure for the song turned out to be unusual though, as the first solo is already played at the 1 minute mark.

Alexi: It was always missing something. But then finally we got the new chorus and it all fell into place.

Janne: Before that it sounded like a parody of black metal!

8. BANNED FROM HEAVEN

"Banned From Heaven" continues the tradition of slow Children Of Bodom songs and it's about a person who is so bad and evil that he can never access Heaven. Great melodies, fantastic keyboards and heavy guitar riffs combined with Alexi's expressive vocal performance create a dark but also stirring atmosphere in the song that contains outstanding solos and catchy group shouts. The second guitar solo was played by Roope. The song was played live for the first time at Sauna Open Air festival 2008.

Alexi: This is my favorite to play. It is our slow song. It's like an old-school death metal ballad!

9. ROADKILL MORNING

"Roadkill Morning" seems to appear from nowhere and immediately stikes brutally. It's exactly how you feel in the morning when you wake up with a terrible hangover and feel like you've been run over by a truck because this fast paced and aggressive song with clever arrangements and quite experimental and unusual solo trade-offs, is exactly about that. For the first time, Children Of Bodom actually had extra material: They had not nine but ten songs ready for this album but since the tenth song wasn't good enough in the band's opinion, they combined parts of it with "Roadkill Morning" and since both songs had a similar rhythm, it worked out well. Warning: You shouldn't listen to this song when you're suffering a hangover!

Alexi: It's pretty violent how bad you can feel when you're that hungover after a night of partying. I wouldn't want to hear this song if I was feeling like that! Metal doesn't do you any good if you've got a hangover.
