DQJ03 (Type 03) 40mm Multi-Purpose Grenade (Click to enlarge)

The Type 90 series 40mm rifle grenade introduced by NORINCO in the late 1980s was the first rifle grenade that has entered operational service with the PLA. The Type 90 was said to be a copy of the Belgian MECAR SA HEDP rifle-launched grenade. The grenade comes in anti-armour, anti-personnel, incendiary, smoke and air burst variants. The grenades can be fired by either the 7.62mm Type 81, the 5.8mm Type 87 rifle, or the 5.8mm QBZ95 (Type 95) assault rifle.

The PLA had developed 70mm Type 67 anti-tank rifle grenade in the 1960s and a 60mm anti-tank rifle grenade in the 1980s, but none of these were equipped by the PLA in significant numbers. One problem is that these grenades must be fired with a blank cartridge. The need to load a blank cartridge at the same time as the rifle grenade proved difficult in combat. Attempting to use a live round to fire a grenade would have disastrous results.

The Type 90 series rifle grenade uses a special bullet trap to remove the need for a special blank round to be loaded to launch. The bullet trap catches the live ball round within the grenade, and uses its energy as well as the expanding gas for propulsion. The grenade is also fitted with a safety mechanism, which can only be triggered by the impact of the bullet, making the grenade safer to use.

All grenades of the Type 90 series are fitted with a disposable ladder sight and stabilising fins. They can be fired from 22mm diameter muzzle. The disposable sight is used when engaging targets within 260m range. For maximum range firing, the grenade is launched at angles 40~45 degrees without using the sight.

DQP1 40mm Anti-Armour Grenade

This grenade was designed to engage armoured targets within 120m distance. At a distance of 50m, its hollow charged anti-armour warhead can penetrate 80mm of steel armour at an angle of 45 degree. When fired by the QBZ95 (Type 95) 5.8mm assault rifle, the grenade has an effective range of 70m and a maximum range of 380m.

DQP1

DQS1 40mm Anti-Personnel Grenade

This grenade was designed to engage enemy personnel and other soft targets within 300m distance. The grenade contains 400 steel balls (3.5mm diameter) and can generate a blast killing zone of 14m radius. When fired by the Type 81 or Type 95 assault rifle, it has a maximum range of 380m.

DQS1

DQR1 40mm Incendiary Grenade

This grenade was designed to ignite materials within 40m distance. The grenade’s warhead can burn at 1,500°C for up to 180 seconds. When fired by the Type 81 or Type 95 assault rifle, it has a maximum range of 400m.

DQR1

DQF1 40mm Smoke Grenade

The smoke grenade in still air can cover an area of 2.5 X 12m for 55 seconds. The grenade has a maximum range of 400m.

DQJ03 (Type 03) 40mm Multi-Purpose Grenade

Also known as Type 03 rifle grenade, this grenade is an improved version of the DQS1 anti-personnel grenade, but with a longer nose that trades the shaped charge for its lethal burst radius against unprotected personnel. The grenade can engage armoured targets within 120m distance, or engage enemy personnel and other soft targets within 260m distance. It can penetrate 80mm of steel armour at an angle of 45° and at the same time produce 300 fragments that scatter over 7m radius on detonation.
