McCain pulling out of Michigan

John McCain is pulling out of Michigan, according to two Republicans, a stunning move a month away from Election Day that indicates the difficulty Republicans are having in finding blue states to put in play.

McCain will go off TV in Michigan, stop dropping mail there and send most of his staff to more competitive states, including Wisconsin, Ohio and Florida. Wisconsin went for Kerry in 2004, Ohio and Florida for Bush.

A McCain aide confirmed the move and chalked it up to the state's Democratic tilt and the resources Obama had put in place there.

"It was always a long shot for us to win," said the aide.

McCain will now turn his attention to bolstering his defenses in Ohio and Florida while putting more resources into Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and the second congressional district of Maine, where there is a sole electoral vote available.

Obama's campaign offered a muted response to McCain's decision to abandon Michigan, only promising to keep it in the Democratic column.

"We will continue to fight for every vote in Michigan because middle class families there just cannot afford more of the same," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

The Illionis Democrat was in Michigan today but didn't mention McCain's move.

Republicans had been bullish on Michigan, hopeful that McCain's past success in the state in the 2000 primary combined with voter dissatisfaction with Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm and skepticism among blue-collar voters about Barack Obama could make it competitive.

McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin spent the first night after the GOP convention at a large rally in Macomb County, just outside Detroit. The two returned later last month for another sizable event in Grand Rapids.

But recent polls there have shown Obama extending what had been a small lead, with the economic crisis damaging an already sagging GOP brand in a state whose economy is in tatters.

A McCain event planned for next week in Plymouth, Mich., has been canceled.

Let the whole campaign move to Georgia. They might be able to keep that one in Obama's landslide.

There goes what was probably McCain's best and most significant offensive move. That leaves him Minnesota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire is useful only if Obama wins via the 269 tie that takes Nevada but loses Colorado. That's a remote situation. So Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania. PA is a state McCain couldn't take the lead in during his bounce, so it's about as bad a shot as Michigan. Minnesota is under-polled, but unpromising. Wisconsin is also a bit under-polled, but unpromising. That makes McCain's best shot at victory managing to hold Colorado, Virginia, Florida, and Ohio. Game over.

HAHAHAHA! Don't expect this article to be linked to Drudge. Too funny... How did it ever get into their heads that Michigan was a battleground state to begin with? Ah well... time to beat a hasty retreat... especially considering Florida looks to be in some serious trouble for the Republicans. Thank you Sarah Palin, for giving us President Obama :-)

Well, perhaps after the debate tonight, if the public, not the media of course, but if the media gives Pallin a break, Mich. might still be in play. Do the voters in Mich. really think that a socialist pacifist is better for them and America. We shall see in a few days when polling goes on.

I guess Obama's strategy wasn't so crazy afterall. Florida really coming into play is a crushing body blow to the McCain campaign. It is the most expensive swing state with very expensive media markets. This is the reason Kerry never went after florida in 2004. McCain will have to get as much money and manpower as he can to defend it. There is absolutely no scenario showing him getting to 270 without Florida. Missouri and Indiana coming into play are also brusing.

McCain's Michigan Campaign Hqs. was located in the building owned by the law firm Trott and Trott. This firm represents banks and other financial institutions that has foreclosed on thousands of Michigan residents. The managing partner of the Trott and Trott law firm is a major donor of Mcain. Michigan has high unemployment and ranks 4th in the nation for foreclosures. McCain's ties with Trott and Trott, clearly indicates that he is not in the corner of the middle class. Most people who lost their homes are the victims of unemployments, i.e. Jobs moving to other states and countries. Banks and other special interest groups support John McCain's campaign. In light of the current economic crises, McCain made a smart move before the national media discovered this connection. Of course, a majority of the voters of Michigan understand the connection. Bush didn't lead Kerry by that much in October ever, Obama's finally got the lead everyone has been anticipating and now the repercussions are showing. McCains' can't spend the $$$ and time needed to turn a Kerry state, so now he has to run the table on Red Bush States, and states like CO are +5% Obama already.

Of course, he still has the entire set of options and ideas from the Bush administration, because he has adopted these wholesale. He is an incompetent, and he is running an evil and nasty campaign. No one ever lost any money underestimating the intelligence of the American people it is said. I'd rather see the republicans in Washington now go down n flames and then see a revolt like the gingrich revolution or reagan revolution when the democrats really mess it up in the next 2 years, than to see these jokers who claim to be republicans. Honestly, did anyone really think Michigan would vote Republican anyway? Doesn't seem like they have learned from years of failed Democratic leadership in their own state - why would they be expected to change now? The thought of an Obama presidency is appalling, but maybe 4 years of Socialism is what this country needs to wake it up again. Looks like the entitlement community is winning... seems like personal responsibility and accountability are lost concepts.

Florida was one of the original Confederate states, while Virginia and North Carolina were not. Actually, the governor of North Carolina elected during the war and the Congressman elected during the 1863 Confederate midterms were downright hostile to the Confederate government. Florida didn't have a very high population during the war, since more than half the state was swampland, that's why you don't hear about many Florida regiments. The Union captured it pretty easily early in the war.

I have stated from day one of the primarys that McCain was the worst pick of the bunch. I will be voting for him because of three things. Number One is Sarah is a conservative. Number Two, McCain is not that lower than a dead dog Obama. Number three. HRC had the nom stolen from her. ( I was possibly going to vote HRC over McCain, I believe at worst, she was equal to McCain.) the real worry for me is that Obama might even be worse than Carter and the country would have a very hard time recovering from Big Ears. One thing is for sure. If the Bail Out is made law and Obama is elected, we will be in for a Massive crash is about 4 years. The problems that we are having are due to Carter regulations (I know the media, Nancy and Obama like to blame Bush but I am talking truth here, not TV Land) He will add more lending regulation that will give more loans to more undserving people and it will be sold...... Again but now with no value.

There are still 32 days until the election and anything can happen so we need to keep that in mind - all you need to do is just look at the last 3 weeks to know that is true. However, that being said, we Michiganders crave real change - after all, we have the worst unemployment numbers in the nation and have been really hurting for the last 2 1/2 years. I live in the thumb - a traditionally held republican area and have talked with so many people since August, 2008. Many of the people I talk with are life-long republicans who have never voted Democrat; these people tell me that they will be voting for Obama in November. The most cited reasons I come across are: 1) McCain's judgment, or lack thereof (Palin as VP and therefore, possible President); 2) lack of insight or understanding of middle-class economics; and 3) cannot risk 4 more years of the same policies. But, as I state before, there are still 31 days and anything can happen.

Just as most Americans do, I work for a living. I watch 40% of every paycheck go straight to the government. Ever consider what you could do with that money? I don't want a government spending my money. Obama says he is going to lower taxes for 95% of Americans...how is that possible when 40% already don't pay taxes at all? And when all the small business owners and corporations have their taxes raised and we're paying 10-20% more for all goods and services while getting paid less...you'll realize the mistake you made with Obama. A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything away

I'm anti-Obama, but this is HUGE news. I'm surprised its not out there as much as it would be if Obama had pulled out of Colorado. This election was such a simple win for the GOP...but they blew it with McCain. Any, personable, GOP candidate could have "handily" beat Obama. Yes, even Romney or Huckabee--both could have pounded the message of Obama as a naive, radical, young guy,...and it would have resonated because Romney and Huck's personalities don't say "I'm ancient and mad." Romney, of course, has style (as shallow as that sounds) and is good looking and fresh. Mark my words, it will go very NEGATIVE starting next week--seriously negative.

MCINSULTS COME HOME TO ROOST!!! Remember during the Michigan primary Econ Major McAmnesty told Michigan workers their jobs were gone forever?! Well, the "let them eat cake" approach doesn't work in a democracy, where people look for leaders, not losers. Michigan didn't forget. Bet Mitt Romney could have carried his home state. McAmnesty also insulted the Iowa caucus when he was in New Hampshire getting ready to bus in out-of-staters to help him get a plurality there. He answered a reporter's question about not campaigning in Iowa by saying, "I don't care if I finish 50th in Iowa!" It looks like he will come close to getting his wish. We remember insults, too. And good post on more troops for Afghanistan planned by Johnny "Just One More Surge" McAmnesty. I thought we had already "won" in Krakistan!

Wow...a lot of cockiness here... I think McCain's leaving Michigan is proof of the inability of the people of that state to see liberalism for what it is. With a liberal governor, that state is in the tank. Also, the economic so-called crisis has definitely leaned Obama's way because of the lies from Democrats and the MSM about what really caused issues with the banks. It was the socail engineering they injected into our financial system. Not to mention Obama taking credit for things he never did...the cult of personality is alive and well in Michigan as seems to be in many places. In addressing the extreme cockiness from blinded Obama supporters just think about the fact that your saviour, who claims to understand how average Americans live, never even set foot on the mainland of this country until his early adulthood. Does he really understand our American experience? I'd also challenge you to name just one of Obama's "friends" and "mentors" who has shown an outward and unabashed love of America.... Most of Obama's mentors and relationships include people who follow the book of Socialism and Alinsky principles. They hate America as She is and will lie to transform her as they see fit....so far it seems to be working like a charm. Do your own research if you don't believe me...look up William Ayers, Saul Alinsky, Louis Farakkhan, ACORN, Weather Underground, Jeremiah Wright, Raila Odinga, Cloward-Piven Strategy, Michael Pfleger....to name a few. If you are on the side of Socialism, befriending terrorists, and speaking face to face with rabid dictators, by all means vote for Obama....you'll get what you want! It is anybody's guess why Republicans are going along with a bail out for irresponsible banks, irresponsible Democrats, and irresponsible homeowners. I am baffled.. But I will take an imperfect McCain because he, at least, will not be destructive.....OBAMA WILL BE DESTRUCTIVE! McCain/Palin 2008

Republican party elite too consumed in their own self interest to have an affect on who their nominee is. And we have the gall to look down our noses at other nations and their election processes.

Anyone who follows the playbook for Presidential campaigns knows that you can't be the first to blink - and pulling out of Michigan is that blink. Pulling out of a high value state on the heels of a week filled with history-making campaign blunders is a sign that the McCain campaign has shifted into "now its all about just avoiding a humuliating landslide loss if we still can" mode. And, of course, holding onto the outside chance that they can still illegally rig yet another election. Most American voters don't vote on the issues or even think for themselves. There's a reason that independents and "leaners" don't make their decision until they walk into the voting booth. They wait until it is clear what most everyone else is doing - because above all else, the independent American voter does not want to be on the losing side. That's the only reason they are "independents" - because they want to be a winner not a loser. A Presidential campaign can be like dominoes. Knock over the first block and start the chain of all the rest falling. McCain has knocked over the first domino. And it's sort of pointless for them to pour more money into Ohio. First of all, every precinct in this state is well-prepared to identify and stop any Republican attempt to manipulate the voting process this year. We've already started voting here in record numbers to prevent any Republican funny business with our votes on election day. And the more the polls say Obama is gaining in Ohio - the more he will gain among the independents who want to go with a winner. Republicans can stomp their feet, call Obama bad names, and throw big temper tantrums all they want. October is the month for momentum - and once the momentum starts, it rolls on unaffected by any desperate stunts on the part of campaigns.

I think it's increasingly clear that those $85 million in public funds are already running thin. Both candidates spent close to that amount in August, and it's unlikely that they were significantly more frugal in September. With more battleground states in play, McCain's chances are looking ever more grim.

Obama handled the economic crisis in a "conservative" manner. He didn't rush to judgment, stayed on an even keel, and once he had the proposal and the facts contributed to the conversation to improve the bill. McCain reacted flippantly and unpredictable, made rash accusations, and "showboated" all last week. Am I the only one who saw that ridiculous smile every time he mentioned how he had "suspended" his campaign while still making appearances on the news and Obama actually beat him to DC. The only reason you didn't hear about that is because Obama wasn't grandstanding and trying to advertise it.

This election will not hinge on a single state. It will hinge on whether the truth about the lax lending standards for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - implemented by Bill Clinton, and protected by Barney Frank comes out. These loans were predicted in 1999 - more than a year before Bush was elected - to be the future cause of a huge "bailout" - now that is exactly what is happening. (Google "NY TIMES SEPTEMBER 30 1999 FANNIE MAE). If Obama wins - then the same people who caused this mess - including corrupt Fannie Mae CEO's Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson - who made millions selling bad loans and cooking the books like ENRON will be right back in power.

I had lunch with my wife today. She was telling be about how yesterday she had lunch with some clients, and all of them, business owners, were Republicans (wow, that's a shocker)... Anyway, she said one of them (let's just call her "Lisa") moved here from Canada. Lisa has a brother who still lives in Canada. A couple of weeks ago, he broke his leg and it was a compound fracture that was really severe. To have it fixed right, he would need to see an orthopedic surgeon. Well, guess what, the waiting list to see one was over 4 months long, and in his condition, he couldn't wait that long. So, you know what they did? The flew him to New Jersey to get seen here in the United States. Get this - they had to fly him to New Jersey!! What a revelation. Lisa also said that per Canadian Law, once a patient is admitted to the hospital, they have to been seen - they cannot be turned away or left untreated, or the caregivers will be prosecuted. The hospitals are so overloaded/understaffed that they usually can't admit someone right away. In emergency cases, the ambulances wait outside with the patients in them until the hospital has another slot "open" to admit them. Lisa said many times at the hispitals you will see a line of ambulances lined-up outside around the block waiting to admit their patients because the hospital is too overloaded to admit them. Really, is this the kind of "change" we need? Lisa is now a US Citizen. She's voting for Mccain. She said she wouldn't vote for a Democrat or Obama in a million years. She saw what "socialized health care" did to Canada, and she said she hopes to God it never happens here.

With Obama as President and Pitiful Pelosi and Scary Harry in charge, The New People's Republic of North America will get what we deserve. No country has ever taxed itself into prosperity and when the non-producers gang up to take from the producers, then the end is near. America needs a law that states unless you actually pay taxes you should not be allowed to vote. Unless you actually contribute to society, and complaining about how you are owed goods and services without having to earn it is not contributing, you should not be able to use yur vote to empower the government to take from someone who earned it and give it to you. I pray this country's voters are not that stupid, but I know they are so we will get the government we deserve.

GOPers deride Dems for being elitist, looking down on "ordinary Americans", calling them hicks, hillbillies, etc. Then when a state doesn't seem to be going for them, suddenly the GOPers feel free to call that state's citizens "dumb, dumb, dumb, shooting themselves in the foot, bunch of losers, idiots, slackers, morons."

As a life long MI resident the thought of more democrat, socialist control scares the hell out me. Ever look at the county by county Michigan election results, big cites blue, rural areas red. High property taxes, state income tax, high gas tax, and state run social programs for everything. I get so tired of giving my dollars to Detroit, Benton Harbor, and Grand Rapids. Our county has 11% unemployment. We have lost 30,000 jobs, and have 11,000 properties for sale, but the governor made us a "cool city." Socialism is not the way, when president Obama brings this to rest of the nation where will we all go?

No big surprise here politically speaking. Sounds like the left is getting a bit cocky though. The sad thruth is if Obama wins, he will be a single term president once the media eventually grills him for who he is and the public actually realizes how liberal he is. I think the media has done a great job masking it and Mccain has done nothing to highlight it.

Obama has benefitted from them in Illinois and they are known for Voter Fraud. 3. He has some of the Top CEOs from Fannie and Freddie as financial Advisors....Ok McCain does also I have heard BUT THEY ARE NOT HIS FINANCIAL ADVISORS. 4. Michigan, Pennsylvania.... Hasn't their economy stunk for forty years?? Why hasn't it ever been Lyndon Johnson's, Jimmy Carter's or Bill Clinton's fault? Now you believe that John McCain is the reason for your ignorant voting patterns and continued current financial crisis in your own back yard? Why don't you get an education and a real job, contribute to your local economy and start enforcing laws to crack down on crimes like killing police officers in Philadelphia, Penn. and Grand Rapids, Mich. being the rape capital of the country? Not to mention the filthy, welfare sucking city of Detroit. Do you ever hear of someone saying,,, we're going to Detroit for vacation?!!! Start doing more that securing bolts on junk union built cars, shoveling coal and inbreeding. Have you heard of college or trade school?? We're not shocked that you people follow your parents footsteps but haven't you seen enough history of your own ancestry actions? You're worse than the idiots in Louisiana begging for the feds to rebuild at taxpayers expense, a home right back in the marshes at eight feet below sea level. Michigan, Pennsylvania,,,, you truly represent to the rest of the world than in fact, every country has illiterate problems based upon laziness that induces poverty and a plea for everyone elses money. If you want something to eat without working for it, I'll save my kitchen garbage for one year and throw it out on you highways next summer so you'll have something to eat without even having to go to the bank to cash your welfare checks. Oh, enjoy those checks because when McCain does get in, he'll write your state off as if Cuba's land just merged with Florida. Good luck with the next 100 years of your states histories. Go eat another bratwurst, kill a cop, commit a rape, keep your kids uneducated,,, and by all means, quit your jobs. The other 48 states owe you idiots NOTHING.

Ultimately,
What the bailout does
Is help those who are concerned
About the health care reform
That is needed
To help shore up our economy,
Helping the?
It's got to be all about job creation, too.

Shoring up our economy
And putting it back on the right track.
So health care reform
And reducing taxes
And reining in spending
Has got to accompany tax reductions
And tax relief for Americans.
And trade.

We've got to see trade
As opportunity
Not as a competitive, scary thing.
But one in five jobs
Being created in the trade sector today,
We've got to look at that
As more opportunity.
All those things.

The other fella is a liar with more corrupt and crooked skeletons in his closet than a man of his modest age and experience should be able to find even if he was trying. He has as much experience to be president as my pet labrador and it top it all off, his policies are blatant steps towards socialism. I would think America would be apalled with the choice they have in November, but most of you people would vote for a dirty gym sock if it had the correct letter after its name. This country will remain a mess until the people wake up and realize that policies mean a heck of a lot more than parties.

Here in WI, Milwaukee and Madison are rife with voter fraud. The college campuses openly boast of mulitple voting. All the students have the same address. No wonder the libs are against voter i.d.. McCain deserves to lose, the way he hid Palin, and refuses to name names in the b.s. bailout. MI also deserves Obama. McCain's lack of experience on the economy is a joke as well as his efforts to continue to support the dollar with aggressive foreign policy. Obama's an idiot for suggesting that more government regulation of the capital market is necessary to protect the "American taxpayer". Yet right, over regulation leads to price fixing which is what caused this fiasco perpetuated by excess government spending to drive up rampant inflation in the first place. And who does the media finally turn to for concrete, real answers? Former Presidential candidate Ron Paul whose knowledge of the economy through the eyes of Austrian School and Von Mises makes him the prime person to be running for president. When the republic is on the knife's edge, it's the man with the most common sense intellect that I want in the White House. Barack Obama is feeding off everyone's concern that its the capital market failing the "workers" to garner more power for the government when in fact a libertarian approach is what we need to protect ourselves from the problem in the first place... TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT! -Ron Paul 2012 (because he makes Reagan look like a liberal spender)

Obama is living the true American dream. Only in America can a person who has never held a job in the private sector, never had one day of executive experience, never served in the military, never had to make a payroll, etc... get to be the Chief Executive and the Commander in Chief. And for all you Kool-Aid drinkers, the Senate is not executive experience, it's legislative experience. I find it almost impossible to fathom that out of the 300 million people here in this country, Obama and McCain is the best we have to choose from. It makes me depressed.

No surprise. Polls out this week show TX, Mississippi, and Georgia now all with just single digit leads for McCain. Obama now has a lead in North Carolina and is tied in Indiana, and has pushed Missouri back into a toss up state. McCain has go back and make sure his deep red states stop turning pink and try to herd in as many of the now tossup but formerly pink states in line. Meanwhile it looks like a number of long established toss up states (VA, CO, and FLA) are starting to turn light blue. In short this election is going to be one big blue tsunami hitting.

And may-be the left liberal democrats will start buying American made cars. How many Toyotas,Nissans do you see driving around your state. Oh that's right it's the republicans who put you out of business. Tell me how many of you actually hear from your unions to offer you a job? Probably not often at least not until election time . Then they call you to tell you who to vote for. At least that's when my husband hears from his sheet metal union after 43 years of membership dues. They do call every election to tell him how to vote. Never to tell him there's work for him. Pathetic in this Independent voters mind. Plus he still gets there business magazine and they were pretty happy and busy with all the work they had up until two years ago when the dems. got the majority in Congress. Go ahead and elect a Junior Senator President, us Michiganders shouldn't be the only Americans to enjoy so much SUCCESS!

Hard to understand rationale of many who post here. I assume they are honest comments. The choice is between a 3.5 veteran of the US Senate who has never held a meeting of his subcommitte, who was an 8-year veteran of the IL Senate from a one-party district and where he never authored a single piece of significant legislation. The gentleman's foreign policy experiences extends to giving a speech in Berlin, visiting Pakistan in 1980 or so, and talking a lot. Of course he is smart, but he is sure short on experience. As to the economy, well he did manage to turn the above record into millions of dollars and get a nice house. His opponent, the Senator from AZ, has a bit longer record, is pretty well known in the foreign policy and defense circles, and has a record of legislation - some partisan, some non-partisan, but always ethical - as long as your arm. I know, I know - this probably isn't convincing to many readers, but folks please take a long, careful, calm look at these guys and don't vote on the basis of emotion or party prejudice.

My question is exactly what has your Democratic leadership in Detroit and through out the state itself actually brought their citizens except poor leadership and bad news? And now, Obama, the man they pretty much worship is going to magically rescue the state...puh-leez!

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

None of any of this matters, because all the Hollywood actors and the media who have heaped total pro-Obama bias on the American public will never take the blame when Obama gets elected solely as a result of their nakedly unfair bias and then the country destroys itself because of the Democrats' incredibly self-destructive economic plans and approach to international problems. Just wait and see! Your vote for Obama is going to get you so much more (in a bad sense) than what you currently bargain for and that you can imagine, and everyone from Keith Olbermann to Sandra Bernhard will be nowhere to be found for duping you when what's left of the whole country goes completely into the crapper. Most voters don't do their homework and have NO idea apart from what these people are telling them to vote for! God help us all!

Heck it shows me he has some political savvy. I wouldn't even try to win Michigan with all of the Arab "Immigrants" who you know are going to vote Obama because they perceive him to be sympathetic to the plight of islam in America. Don't mention that all of the black population (95%) are already committed to vote for Obama. Throw in the gigantic automobile unions who wouldn't vote for a Republican if their life and country depended on it, and you have a recipe for severe wasted resources. I just wish he would have faced reality a long time ago and not wasted any money or time the first two times he visited the place. Have a nice day at the poles, but remember 1 thing. Politicians are just a mirror of the people they represent, so when you are unhappy with you shi**tty economy you can begin by taking some responsibility for your failed policy in the past. Sweetness and Light to all of you

We all know McCain's story on how he got where he is. Has anyone thought about how Obama's rise to fame came about. The last person to rise so far so fast was JFK. And it's common knowledge that he got there because of his father's payouts to underhanded political groups and organized crime. I'm not knocking JFK, just the way he got to where he got. You have to questions who's been backing Obama in his out of no where rise to fame. You also have to questions what ties he has to these individuals or groups of individuals. In '04, when Obama first came on the national scene, I was impressed. But since researching his background, it's obvious someone is pulling the strings. What price will we pay if he's elected?

Just answer this... If the minorities have it so bad, and most live in large cities with high crime rates that are some of the most financially distressed, deteriorating cities in this nation, with Black Democrats for mayors, why do they keep voting Democrat? Seems like those they depend on are not really that dependable, or capable!

Why am I the only one who sees the obvious? McCain NEVER was intended to win. He's a "hero." He's been doing his part to rehabilitate the party for next cycle, having gone into a known impossibility for "the ultimate good of his Country." His choice in Palin is for one reason only: to present a new face for the GOP to rally around and model itself after for NEXT election.

After Obama and his team send the US into a massive recession (or worse) the people jumping up and down in MI and other Obama states can look in the mirror when they want to pass blame. If Detroit did not turn out ugly pieces of junk we'd outsell Korea, Japan, Germany etc. Sadly - tis not the case. US models are uninspired, generally poor gas mileage and lacking in features for the money. Seriously - we wants a Ford over a Honda? Look in Consumer Reports. Obama is not going to be able to change any of this.
