[June 7, 2005] KWRU marched from City Hall to the Convention Center today, carrying signs that said, “MY LIFE MATTERS,” and “Medicaid Cuts = Thousands Dead.” The march, which happened during rush hour, fed into the National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees’ march and culminated with a huge rally inside. In the packed hall at the Convention Center, KWRU showed solidarity as the union unanimously voted to strike if their contract is not resolved by June 30th. Read more...

[June 3, 2005] Today the KWRU learned that Luis Mejias never served in Iraq. He was, however, in Kosovo and served many years in the military. Luis apologizes for lying about his service to KWRU, other veterans who served our country, and other supporters. Regardless of his discharge status, KWRU is still committed to helping Luis and his family in securing housing and mental health services.

[May 24, 2005] KWRU seeks housing for homeless Iraq War Veteran. On Tuesday, May 17, 2005, Luis Mejias, his partner Ana and two of her three children, 10 year old Gabriel and 7 year old Ramon came to the office of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union (KWRU), looking for help with finding a place to live. [March 2, 2005] The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights of the Organization of American States will hold a hearing at the OAS headquarters on the violation of the economic human right to housing in the United States, Canada and Brazil for March 4th at 4:15pm in Washington, D.C. The hearing was requested by the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign. [February 28, 2005] As a result of months of pressure from SEPTA riders and labor unions across the state, Philadelphians will get to keep our public transit system. Aside from participating in demonstrations in Harrisburg urging the Governor to flex the funding for SEPTA, the Kensington Welfare Rights Union is also part of a lawsuit that the Mayor, the Philadelphia Unemployment Project, and Action Alliance filed against the SEPTA board. Homeless families from the Kensington Welfare Rights Union set up a “Bushville” Tent City in Philadelphia to demand the human right to decent, affordable housing. The Bushville traveled to Washington, DC to HUD on December 6th.
