7, 2005] KWRU marched from City Hall to the Convention Center
today, carrying signs that said, “MY LIFE MATTERS,”
and “Medicaid Cuts = Thousands Dead.” The march,
which happened during rush hour, fed into the National Union
of Hospital and Health Care Employees’ march and culminated
with a huge rally inside. In the packed hall at the Convention
Center, KWRU showed solidarity as the union unanimously
voted to strike if their contract is not resolved by June

3, 2005] Today the KWRU learned that Luis Mejias never served
in Iraq. He was, however, in Kosovo and served many years
in the military. Luis apologizes for lying about his service
to KWRU, other veterans who served our country, and other
supporters. Regardless of his discharge status, KWRU is
still committed to helping Luis and his family in securing
housing and mental health services.

24, 2005] KWRU seeks housing for homeless Iraq War Veteran.
On Tuesday, May 17, 2005, Luis Mejias, his partner Ana and
two of her three children, 10 year old Gabriel and 7 year
old Ramon came to the office of the Kensington Welfare Rights
Union (KWRU), looking for help with finding a place to live.
Homeless for several months, they had been sleeping in their

human right to housing in the United States, Canada and

and labor unions across the state, Philadelphians will get
to keep our public transit system. Aside from participating
in demonstrations in Harrisburg urging the Governor to flex
