Felipe Massa: I did not collide with Lewis Hamilton deliberately during Japanese GP

Felipe Massa has refuted accusations from Lewis Hamilton that he deliberately clipped him during the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday, causing the McLaren driver to spin.

Hamilton started on pole, but after impeding Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen at the first turn he then collided on the second lap with Massa to end his hopes of a podium finish.

In the end, Hamilton finished a lowly 12th, while Massa completed the race eighth before being promoted to seventh after Sebastien Bourdais was struck with a time penalty after the race.

That saw the Toro Rosso driver drop to 10th, allowing Massa to collect a vital two points and close the gap on Hamilton in the driver standings to just five.

Hamilton, though, was left fuming, and said: "I went up the inside because Felipe braked late and gave me the advantage. I took the corner as normally as always and left room, but he hit me pretty hard.

"He came back very aggressive and hit me. I think it was pretty much as deliberate as can be."

Massa was given a drive-through penalty for the incident, and was infuriated when he heard Hamilton had laid the blame squarely on his shoulders.

The Brazilian driver said: "I did not hit him deliberately. I can't believe he sees it that way. For me it was just a racing incident but we took the penalty.

"He braked too late and just pushed me off the track. I had two wheels in the gravel and couldn't stop the car.

"I have a good relationship with Lewis and I will not do something to destroy something by purpose. That is true."

Hamilton was also angered that he received a time penalty for supposedly impeding Raikkonen.

Hamilton had made a slow start and was passed by Massa's team-mate on the run down to the first corner.

The Briton left his braking too late, locked up and slide off the track, taking Raikkonen with him.

Hamilton damaged his front tyres in the incident and admitted he had made a mistake. However, he does not believe it merited a penalty.

He said: "My personal disappointment is the start and the way I'm treated.

"Everyone went wide (at the start) but for some reason I got a penalty for that. I can't understand that.

"But it doesn't really matter if I agree with it, I can't change it and I just need to keep it together.

"I don't think it makes any difference (to the title race). We'll move on next week and make sure we win the last two races.

"We plan on winning; not at any cost, but we plan on winning.

"You can wish you did something differently but I made a mistake and I paid for it.

"It's damage limitation. Forget this race ever happened and move on."
