Mountains have exceptionally high biodiversity and cultural diversity. They cover 24% of the earth's land surface and about 25% of the global population lives in or very near mountains.

Mountain Watch is a report that will provide a highly visual, map-based overview of the ecological and social values of mountain ecosystems, the current and potential pressures facing mountain environments and people, and approaches to sustainable development in mountain areas.

The UNEP.Net Mountain Portal is a website that provides access to the major events and information on mountain environments and development. The portal is managed by UNEP-WCMC.
